About the property

4 Bedrooms + Office/Den - 5 Baths - (Sleeps 8), Located Directly On The Ocean

Fabulous furnishings and upgrades to this already beautiful house.

Here is the base of operation for your Big Island adventure. Mika Kai is a beautiful oceanfront home in a tropical Hawaiian setting. It sits on lava bluff about 15 feet above the crashing waves. The oceanfront pool, hot tub and huge lanai give you a private resort all your own. This beautifully decorated home is not your ordinary vacation rental.

Fully fenced and gated, it has 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, 2 stories, over 3000 square feet, and right on the blue Pacific. This is a super comfortable home for your family group. The layout of the house is: 4 spacious Bedrooms – all 4 ensuite, each with its own private bathroom. The bedrooms are situated as such: downstairs has a master suite with a King Bed and a Japanese soak tub; a second bedroom downstairs has 2 Twin Beds. Upstairs has 2 more bedrooms both with Queen Beds. A second living room is located upstairs. This area is open to downstairs, very dramatic. On the main level, under the soaring ceilings, you will find an expansive living room with lots of comfortable seating, a large fully stocked and equipped modern kitchen, a dining room with seating for 8, a 5th bathroom with shower. A washing machine and clothes dryer including laundry soap is included.

At Mika Kai you will find guidebooks, Hawaii reef fish identification books, Big Island picture books, up-to-date pamphlets, and insider tips on secrets only known to the locals. Yet you may find that you wish to just sit on the lanai at Mika Kai and never leave. That’s okay too. For your enjoyment, we have beach towels, and various water flotation items. Pack your swimsuits and come on over!

You will love the surrounding nature and the natural beauty of the area. Volcano National Park is approximately 45 minutes away. Great snorkeling is about 20 minutes. Waterfalls, nature hikes, champagne pond, steam vent caves, black sand beaches, surfing & boogie boarding, botanical gardens and scenic drives through rainforest are all nearby. Hilo is the second largest city in the Hawaiian Islands. This is old Hawaii at its natural best. The whale watching from November through March from Mika Kai's huge lanai is some of the best you'll find in all the Islands.

Note: Mika Kai is in a residential neighborhood and to be good neighbors we do not rent the house for large parties or events. We do not allow more than a total of 8 people on the property at any one time.

Check Our Calendar – Mika Kai is a very popular vacation rental. So that you will not be disappointed, please check our availability calendar. It is updated daily. You are wise to book ahead, because we are already getting many inquiries for 2019 for new and returning guests

Why Ingrid Carvalho chose Keaau

Mika Kai is very special to me, as I stayed here often over the past 10 years and love the location. When the previous owners wanted to sell, they promised to let me know, and they did this year. I have enjoyed furnishing it and making every detail count.

What makes this house unique

The ocean views from the house and the spacious pool deck are amazing. Sunrises, Sunsets, whales, waves and cruise ships can all be seen from Mika Kai.

Every bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, which allows privacy and convenience for everyone.

The living room, kitchen and dining room are all open and look out over the outside deck with private pool and spa.

You and your family will love staying here!

Guestbook comments from the owner

5 of 5 Stars

Mika Kai is a well-stocked property, clean and inviting. There were Hawaiian goodies waiting for us when we arrived and the pictures of the property were accurate.

Close by Pahoa town offers unique and delicious food and the Kapoho tide pools (some of the best snorkeling in the world) are a 20 minute trip away.

Mika Kai is a beautiful home with stunning views of the ocean and all the amenities we needed!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful home, beautiful location! We spent a week at Mika Kai with our 3 adult daughters and their significant others. It was the perfect size for 4 couples and we made great use of the pool and hot tub. The location is wonderful-within a half hour drive to many attractions and activities. I had concerns about Hilo being the rainy side of the island, but we had beautiful weather every day. We all hated to leave!

Great Property - Especially if you like to be away from it all. Literally

  • 4 of 5

The home, the setting, the view, the customer care, all were wonderful. Could not say enough about it. The one down side for many will be the proximity to anything. The home is located on the far edges of a remote community. It was real quite and peaceful, but when you wanted to go do anything outside the home, it was a drive. A good 25 to 30 minutes to and from Hilo. But the home was the perfect size for our family of 8. The patio, pool and hot tub were great to enjoy, especially with the powerful waves crashing feet away. We loved eating on the lania each day and taking in the views and the ocean breeze. The sun rises were spectacular. We even frequently saw sea turtles swimming right by the home. The location may not be for everyone, but those who want to be far from the tourist areas will love this one.

A question I had before coming was though it is ocean front, can you use the ocean there for anything. Definitely not swimable or usable ocean other than for viewing, maybe fishing, but that would be a stretch. There is a 15 to 20 foot cliff on the edge of the volcanic rock dropping into very tumultuous seas. The waves were big, 8 plus feet, and would break hard enough on the rocks to send spray 25 to 30 feet into the air. Beautiful to watch, but not to get in.

Lost in the Tropics

  • 4 of 5

Mika Kai was everything is was advertised to be. Juanita's patient and responsive assistance was invaluable. We were 8 people, so reactions were mixed. Extreme humidity, even with trade winds, made it very difficult for some to sleep most nights, even with fans blowing (thus, -1 star). The extreme isolation made some unhappy, mostly the city folks used to walking to stored and restaurants. There were amazing vistas walking in either direction (north or south), although we all agreed the northern walk was the best. Watching the sunrise from the deck each morning was especially beautiful and contemplative. If the blooming gardenias, hibiscus and anthurium were not convincing enough, listening to the Coquí each night left no doubt that we were in a tropical Paradise.

Owner's Response: Aloha Charles We are very happy you loved your stay at Mika Kai and it certainly is everything it is advertised to be. Sorry about some of the town folk but it a 10 minute drive up to Starbucks or the market. It’s definately not in the heart of Hilo town But....close to we advertise.. With each room having a wonderful ceiling fan for summer and additional flloor fans, it has been great. .....,,although i will look into this as we take each comment seriously. Mika Kai is difinately a 5 star property and we have given you 5 stars as guests . Please do return again we would love to have you back. Aloha Ingrid

This house had everything we could possibly want for our vacation! It was a perfect location for peaceful, relaxing days and evenings! And it was just an easy drive to Hilo, Volcano National Park, the Macadamia Nut Farm, farmers markets, and even the green and black sand beaches! What a beautifully diverse Island! The views from inside the house and the back patio were spectacular and we spent most of our time out there admiring the sunrises and the spectacular sound of crashing waves on the volcanic rock back yard. The kitchen was equipped with everything you could want. All we needed to bring was food! The welcome basket was such a nice surprise too! It felt like they thought of even the smallest things to make us comfortable! Juanita made sure to check on us and did a wonderful job making sure that we had everything we needed! There was more than enough room for the 5 of us, and the house felt welcoming, comfortable and very much like home! Wish we were there a month earlier as we missed the humpbacks, but were able to see the sea turtles, crabs and dolphins! Guess we will just have to come back earlier next time! Would recommend Mika Kai in a heartbeat! It was VERY hard to leave!

Comfortable home with lovely amenities

  • 5 of 5

We traveled with mom and dad plus the four kids and were amazingly comfortable here. The kids never wanted to stop swimming and the ocean was spectacular. Every room having its own bathroom was divine, and we loved the hot tub overlooking the water. We will stay here again if come to Hilo!!! It was a little far from town, which we didn't realize, but we all agreed that the little extra drive was worth it for this home!

Long Beach, California

Every thing we could want or need was there for us.

  • 5 of 5

All the things that make a place easy, nice, fun and complete were there for us. Umbrellas, pool floats, battery lanterns, grill utensils, pool towels, binoculars, Vase (we bought some fresh tropical flowers), spices, cooking oil, popcorn, coffee grinder, blender, masks, and snorkels. The list even longer.

We saw a few whales, some dolphins, and turtles in the ocean and viewable from the shore. We split our time between here and Island touring.

All was wonderfull.
