Overview

About the property

2-3 Bedrooms, 1 Bathrooms, Sleeps 5-7

Goldfinch Cabin is the ideal lodging for groups, families, and couples who want a scenic, peaceful retreat that is just a few minute's walking distance from the Appalachian Trail and Hot Springs!

The cabin is surrounded by English cottage garden style flowers and a picket fence and backed by woods full of songbirds to greet you at sunrise. When you are ready to head to town for live music and supper, leave the car behind. Put on your sneakers and stroll on in! Want to adventure out for a full moon hike on the Appalachian Trail? The trailhead is just outside of your front door. Once you are ready to cozy down inside, enjoy our WiFi and make your friends and family jealous by sending them your cool trip photos!

A master bedroom with a queen bed welcomes all honeymooners and sweethearts, and if you are traveling with children or friends there is a second bedroom with one twin bed and one full bed. An additional third bedroom with a double bed can be added on by request ($10/night) if you're booking for a larger group. The additional bedroom charge will not exceed $25 when staying three or more days.

Goldfinch Cabin is outfitted with a kitchenette. This includes a coffee maker (of course!), a coffee bean grinder, a mini-fridge/freezer, a sink, a set of basic plates, bowls, and utensils, a cutting board, knife, and crock-pot. There is no oven or stove in this kitchenette.

The shower is in a separate room from the toilet and sink, making it easier for larger groups to share these spaces.

There is a television as well as over 100 DVDs to choose from. We do not have cable/satellite TV.

We pride ourselves on our VERY CLEAN cabin. Just check out our reviews!

LINENS AND SOAPS

All linens (towels, washcloths, sheets, dish cloths) are provided. Bath bars and hand soaps are also included.

INTERNET

We've got WiFi! We have the best WiFi that is possible to get at our location, BUT it is satellite internet and is affected by the weather and heavy usage times in the county. Do expect to be able to browse the web, but do not expect to be able to stream movies or music. Sometimes it will, and sometimes it won't!

AIR CONDITIONING

Yes! We do have air conditioning to keep you cool on hot summer days. In contrast with loud traditional A/C units, our mini-split operated air conditioning is very quiet so you will not be disturbed while sleeping!

HEAT

Yes! We have a remote-controlled mini-split heating system to keep you warm on even the coldest winter days. Original baseboard heat is present as well for additional warmth if desired.

2 WHEEL DRIVE ACCESSIBLE

The cabin is on a well-maintained state road and the approach and parking is flat, so it is accessible by two wheel drive vehicles in all but the most severe of storms!

TWO NIGHT minimum stay for reservations including a weekend night (Friday and Saturday). ONE NIGHT minimum stay offered for Sunday-Thursday nights. Weekend one night weekend stays will be accepted if the day is "stranded" (rented the night before and night after) or if it 4 days or less from your desired check-in date.

ADJACENT CABIN

Goldfinch shares a wall with an adjacent cabin (Chickadee). Each cabin has its own private parking and private entrance. Shared wall is soundproofed for privacy.

PETS

Goldfinch is pet-friendly! Mostly we expect dogs, but cats may be welcome as well. If your pet is not house friendly (chewing, scratching, general chaos and destruction...) we ask that you kindly leave them elsewhere OR bring a kennel for their time in the house. A $15 pet fee covers up to two pets for the entire duration of your stay.

NO SMOKING

This is a NON SMOKING vacation rental. Evidence of smoking, such as the smell of cigarette or cigar smoke inside the home by the owner or cleaning crew is sufficient basis to charge the renter for smoke clean-up and removal from carpeting, AC ducts & filters and furniture. This type of clean up is expensive and Renter is Liable for the Costs

THE AREA

Goldfinch Cabin is located near town and only steps from the southern entrance to the Appalachian Trail. We would guess that we are 78 steps away, but haven't actually counted :) The AT will cruise you straight on in to Hot Springs, no car required, and you can expect it to take 5-15 minutes depending on your ability level and where you are headed in town.

A three minute drive will land you at the famous Hot Springs Spa and Resort, where you can soak in Hot Springs' naturally heated mineral tubs. For a real "day at the spa," check out their massages as well!

We are across the street from the Laughing Heart Lodge, which is a beautiful building that is an old Jesuit Retreat Center and is now operated as a predominantly private events center. There are public yoga and dance classes periodically, and guests of Goldfinch have an open invite from the owners to enjoy their beautiful garden and grounds!

There are other houses on our road, but they are not visible from the cabins, as we are surrounded on three sides by forest.

GUEST ACCESS

Guests have access to all areas photographed and mentioned. The additional bedroom is available for an additional charge of $10/night. All photos of the additional bedroom begin with "Add-On", so you can know which one that it is! If you do not specifically request the additional bedroom, you will not have access to this room.

HOUSE RULES

Please treat our space with respect, as we have tried to create the best experience possible for you and would like to provide the same for all guests in the future. We want you to play and adventure and enjoy your vacation! We just ask that you do all of these things with care :)

About Natalie Marsh

I grew up in the much rockier Rocky Mountains of Colorado, raising goats, chickens, rabbits, horses, and a rotating selection of other farm critters with my parents and my younger sister.

I moved to North Carolina in 2009 and have spent much of my time gardening, studying wild edible and medicinal plants of the Appalachian Mountains, building and remodeling, and raising and milking a few more rogue goats. I live just outside of Hot Springs on a sunny hillside with my husband Andrew and daughter Chloe.

I love to welcome folk to Hot Springs and the surrounding area, so don't hesitate to ask me for hiking recommendations, the inside scoop on local swimming holes, or where to find homemade Appalachian crafts!

Why Natalie Marsh chose Hot Springs

You can't beat how close to Hot Springs this place is, while still feeling secluded! Having such easy access to the Appalachian Trail is a great benefit.

What makes this cabin unique

The cottage-style gardens and natural wood and stone exterior of the cabin is a style I love! I hope that it makes people feel like they are in another place and time.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for the stay at the Goldfinch. We hike 12.5 miles on the AT, had dinner, and then a great soak in the mineral springs. The cabin is super cute! Great pillows!

Hot Springs to Max Patch to Appalachin Trail

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in the Goldfinch Cabin was perfect! Very comfortable and clean. Everything we needed was at our finger tips and a step outside the door. Great location for hiking the AT and eating in Hot Springs. You can walk to downtown on AT but must be able to navigate stone steps downtown. Convenient to the mineral bathes and massages right across the street from the cabin. And, our Nutmeg was welcome, too!

Can't wait to go back next year. Thanks, Natalie!

Great place to stay if you don't need a full kitchen

  • 5 of 5

Songbird Cabin is picturesque and comfortable, and the location is perfect. We were there for a large festival, and it was an easy walk away but up on the hillside away from the traffic and noise. We've stayed there twice and plan to go back next year. The ad mentioned that you could walk down the Appalachian trail into town, and we did that once, but it's steep and rocky and a bit longer of a walk. Walking down the road is a bit less pleasant but much faster and easier.
