About Jennifer & Wally Szunko
Our foursome has lived in this house since 2004 and never tire of the amazing vistas and sunsets. We love to travel and often use VRBO when we go to the mountains skiing or to California for golf. Traverse City has been home for Wally and Jennifer long before they met here in the summer of 1990. In 2010 the Szunko family started the first bike and kayak rental business at Clinch Park Marina in downtown Traverse City--The River TC. Although the business was sold to a friend, the kids spent the next six summers working there and refer to it as the "center of the universe". Jennifer is retired from working at a book review magazine and now drives the Brew Bus for wine & beer tours and renovates forgotten houses; Wally works in the auto industry (when he's not golfing); Aleksa recently graduated from DePauw University and landed her dream job in Indianapolis; and Cole attends Northern Michigan University. All four love being outdoors, playing tennis, golf, running, biking, skiing, snowboarding, and socializing with friends around a great meal or s'mores at the campfire. We have a wide circle of friends all over Northwest Northern Michigan so if you have a question about the area, we can find the answer. We are happy to assist with reservations, tee times, setting up transportation, or suggesting activities. Our home has been described as "simple and comfortable, like your favorite pair of jeans". We want our friends and visitors to feel relaxed and at home so let us know if there is anything you need. You can join us for a glass of wine on the deck in the evening, build yourself a campfire in the fire pit or kickback on your private patio.
Jennifer & Wally Szunko purchased this Apartment in 2004
Why Jennifer & Wally Szunko chose Traverse City
We spent ten years in an English Tudor on the east side of Old Mission Peninsula less than a mile from our house on the Leorie Vineyard. We loved living on the peninsula but the only one that really enjoyed the beautiful sunrises was Jennifer. When we were presented with an opportunity to sell the house the timing seemed right to make the move to the sunset side. It was a quick turnaround which didn't leave time to purchase our next home so we opted to rent a camper and put our belongings into storage. The kids had a fantastic summer of camping! In late July of 2004 we walked into the house on Leorie Drive and immediately fell in love with the view, the granite fireplace, and the California architecture. The kids fell in love with the tree swing. More than a decade later the top to bottom renovation is nearly complete and we have never had a moment of regret. Now its time to share our space with others!
What makes this Apartment unique
The house sits on the edge of the Leorie vineyard where grapes are grown and turned into one of Michigan's finest red wines at Black Star Farms winery. Beyond the vineyard is West Grand Traverse Bay and a view of downtown Traverse City in the distance. On Wednesday nights and Saturday afternoons throughout the summer you can see and sometimes hear the local sailboat races. There is always something interesting coming into view: boats, storms, wildlife, hot air balloons, fireworks, the Blue Angels, and more.

Very kind people, very quick on responses as well.
Extremely cozy setting with lovely views.
Jennifer was extremely welcoming when we arrived. And her recommendations for restaurants were great. (The franklin and Towne plaza). The space was perfect for us and the view from the back porch was incredible. Home was clean. Excellent location near wineries and downtown TC. Would definitely stay again.
Beautiful Views from Above the Bay and Cozy in the Living Room
This was a beautiful setting. The weather didn't cooperate (cool and misty much of the weekend) so we weren't able to sit outside or light a fire in the fire pit, but we would have if we could have. Love the seclusion of the property with the beautiful view. You get a nice sunset from the property (weather cooperated that night). The gas fireplace added a nice warm up and cozy feeling to the weekend. Jennifer was very nice and gracious. And true to form, we were given a bottle of hard cider (delicious) and some local potato chips. It was a nice welcome after a long drive.
I don't want to ruin the perfect rating so I still give them a 5-star overall rating, but there was one negative that some people would want to know about. They don't allow renters to bring dogs (which is a non-issue for us...we are not dog people), but they do have a dog upstairs and that is not mentioned in the write up. It's important because we like to sleep in (we don't sleep in at home, so vacation is the only time we get to do so). The dog did not bark very much, and I do mean that, but it did bark a few times each morning, enough to wake us up. We rolled with it and got going because there is so much to do in TC, and it may not be an issue for most folks, but that is something we didn't know about and other renters may want to be aware of. Everything else was really, really wonderful.
Thanks for staying with us and your kind words, Brian. I am so sorry that Ollie woke you. The acorns and squirrels are out in full force this time of year and they do torment her! Its unusual for her to bark otherwise. We appreciate your feedback. Although we do write about Ollie in the description of our family on this site, we have now also added under the Rules about Pets. We hope to see you again next year!
Beautiful and peaceful view of the Bay!
We absolutely loved the breathtaking view of the West Grand Traverse Bay and it was so private and peaceful! It was a great way to watch the sunset over the bay! The apartment was nice (and clean) and contained everything we needed.
It was great to have you stay with us, Alicia. We look forward to your return. :)
We enjoyed waking up to Grand Traverse Bay, but the nighttime view was exceptional. The property is clean, well-maintained, and included a lot of amenities. We appreciate Jennifer and Wally sharing it with us.
Stunning views of the bay, clean quiet and comfortable home. Awesome owner! Highly recommend it!
What a lovely, peaceful and relaxing place to stay! Jennifer was absolutely wonderful...warm, welcoming and gracious. Everything you could want or need was accounted for ahead of time. We were given our space and privacy in the lower level and made to feel as if we were staying in our own home. We also had the peace of mind of knowing that Jennifer was only a text away if we needed anything at all. There was a stunning view in this tranquil getaway. We enjoyed eating breakfast on the patio each morning, watching the sunset over the bay each evening and even sitting by the fire pit at night.
