Dated low spec villa
The villa is a large three storey 4 bedroom (plus another used as a gym) property. It has great views to the South and the Mediterranean. The villa is owned and managed by a British couple who live next door. The owners are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble for them – if they can help, they will and they are very attentive to their guests. On arrival, the owners kindly provided bread, wine and a box of cereals.
The location – quite a distance from the Tala village centre – is isolated and appears to be the ubiquitous British enclave that the Greek community refer to as ‘the brit ghetto’. A ghetto is it not and we think that the word has been lost in translation or maybe just a bit of ribbing. However, we could find nothing of any interest or useful within walking distance apart from large apparently empty villas of a similar disposition. The isolation from the local Cypriot community is telling. This is, in our opinion, the story of the area rather than just this particular property. It would be useful to know this. Having said that the villa is advertised as ‘rural’.
The villa is well maintained but sadly lacks any appeal for those accustomed to modern mildly luxurious living in northern Europe. It is dated and has too many personalised items inside that reflect the owners tastes and ages. There is no central heating and the air-conditioning units are noisy. The dominant theme is brown and why anyone would choose brown in sub-tropical Mediterranean villa is lost on us.
The kitchen is horribly dated and doesn’t have the fresh clean lines, crockery, cutlery, glassware that make you feel uncomfortable using without first washing. Yuk!
The towels are well used and hard. The bed linen is okay but the brown theme continues its 1980s journey into the bedroom also. The owners believe it is acceptable to leave unused food items from previous guests – opened or not we found this to be unpleasant and, frankly, embarrassing to think we need or would want someone else’s leftovers. The kitchen should be completely cleared of everything except basic stainless steel utensils, cutlery and crockery. Glasses should be identical ranges with say two sizes for long drinks and cocktails.
The wifi hub is poorly located and wifi is not available outside, on the lower ground floor and pool area.
For us it was a journey back in time and, at supposedly off-peak, poor value for money. We would not wish to stay here again.
Dear Reviewer, Thank you very much for taking the time to write such an extensive review for the villa. We appreicate all feedback good and bad as this helps us get better. The owner has looked at the review in some detail and made the following responses:
We are pleased to acknowledge your review of our villa and wish to respond to the concerns you raise.
It’s location and the view it affords, is the very essence of why the vast majority of our guests choose to visit Villa Serenity - as its name clearly implies, you will never be disturbed by noisy neighbours or the general hubbub of daily village life. Isolated however , it certainly is not. The local monastery and amphitheatre (both with adjoining cafe & amenities ) are within casual walking distance whilst Tala village with the ‘ local Cypriot community ‘ to which you refer, is just a three minute car journey.
The comments are a reflection of your very specific tastes and expectations.
The air-conditioning units have several fan speeds and a ‘quiet’ mode - of which we would have immediately enlightened you, had you alerted us to your concern. Never has our inventory been described as needing ‘first washing’ - as owners, we attend personally to every facet of cleaning in preparation for our visitors arrival and are frequently complimented on this.
People come to Cyprus in general and Paphos in particular, for it’s climatic location and ancient heritage, Ultramodern, high-tech rental properties are available for those people who wish to seek them out and pay a proportionate premium for the perceived benefit of doing so.
Villa Serenity is contemporary in design. It was built in 2007, deliberately in the character of the majority of others in the immediate neighbourhood. It is regretful that your internet devices were unable to logon to the wifi network outside the villa. The available bandwidths regularly checked and used frequently by other visitors outside. Again, with a simple query, we could have resolved that issue. It became obvious to us soon after your arrival, from the several leads, cables and other electronic devices lying around, that the purpose of your visit went beyond simply a leisure break. If we had known and better understood your requirements, we may well have advised that you consider a different property in an alternative location.
We thank you again and wish you all the best
Owners of Serenity Villa
The villa is situated in the breathtaking hills of Tala, in Paphos. Its elevated position ensures all-round town and sea views which can be enjoyed from the landscaped garden, swimming pool and from most rooms of the house. Only a 10 minute drive from the Blue Flag beaches at Coral Bay and from the centre of Paphos, Tala is a popular location for visitors, ex-pat residents and holiday home owners alike. Looking down on the main town of Paphos (out to the Med), and often labelled the 'Beverley Hills' of Cyprus, Tala offers a peaceful location with a good village heart including the infamous monastery and a fine selection of bars, restaurants, traditional taverns and other eateries. A new bakery, internet cafe and small small shops mean you rarely need to leave the village. Just outside Tala into the hillside is ‘Vatouthka', a family run Taverna with amazing views and atmosphere. The Sunday lunch buffet is the best value around and booking is always advisable. Golf: 4 Golf courses are within half an hours drive. Please ask for further details. We can access the lowest rates available at the new Elea Estate golf course (near Paphos airport). Ski-ing available at Troodos Mountains
