St. John Stonehouse cordially invites you to have one of the most relaxing, beautiful and exciting vacations of a lifetime.
You'll be enchanted from the moment you drive through the gate into this private tropical retreat. Designed by island architect Glenn Speer, this home's native stone walls and accents give it a truly eclectic feel.
Stonehouse is set on one and a half acres on the far side of Bordeaux mountain with spectacular views of Coral Bay Harbour. A classic Iron gate welcomes you up its long private driveway covered in flowers and aloe plants.
Our house features two master bedrooms with four-poster beds (one king and one queen) each with its own exotic stone bath and balcony.
The walls in the house are made of beautiful island stone making you feel as if you are in a castle.
We had a great time visiting our favorite island, one that we've visited many times. The Stonehouse is great for adults but not children since all the bedrooms are completely separated ( one is even 200 yards away down a dark path ) and you lock yourselves in for the night with individual room locks. If you like nature it is perfect since you're tucked away in a beautiful rain forest...with merely screens between you and the outside. The view is amazing. Lock up your valuables, we were broken into and had electronics etc stolen. We had hidden a key outside, since we thought we might lose it during a day of snorkeling but the thief found it! Coral Bay is right down the road with shop great spots to grab dinner and a cocktail.
Stayed for a week with friends for a 50th Birthday. Had a friend who stayed for a month and told me how relaxing the house is and what a great time they had. The house was clean and ready too go when we arrived. All went smoothly and the location was easy to find. My wife and myself have been vacationing for over ten years in and around the usvi and BVI and both agree we can't wait to stay at the stone House again.
My family of 5 enjoyed 10 nights at The Stonehouse. Excluding the 3rd BR downstairs and around the back, the place is fantastic!
Were met at the ferry by a very nice lady from the company that manages the property who helped us grab our provisions at Star Market in Cruz Bay (you can order online and have it waiting for you if you plan well) and took us on the 20-minute drive to Coral Bay. The first step through the LR and kitchen to the view was actually breathtaking.
The rotunda is great--2 great wicker couches, a hammock and a DR table we used often. This home is near the top of the mountain so we opened the doors that separate the rotunda and the kitchen/LR and the breeze was great--didn't need A/C. When we did, the top 2 BR's had good, working AC's.
Small snafu with the hot water but owner had a plumber there the next day--very responsive and didn't affect our trip at all as the cold water isn't too cold to shower with.
The two main BR entrances are off the rotunda. The third BR below was not secured from the wildlife (geckos!)--my teens were taping some screen seems so the geckos wouldn't get it but after a few days they waved the white flag and moved upstairs to the 2nd BR. We kicked my son out and he slept on the provided Aerobed which was fine. As in an earlier post, some attention to a few small things would make this place perfect.
Coral Bay location is great--we rented a jeep from Amalie Car Rental at STT (recommend) and took it to a new beach almost every day. We made lunch the night before and packed a backpack cooler with beer, soda and water and we were off.
We cooked dinner half the nights and used the gas grill (great) and stovetop--all the tools and pots/pans you need are there. They provide you with cloth napkins--I suggest you get some paper ones.
The pool is larger than it appears on the site, and we used it almost everyday post-beach.
We lit a few mosquito repellent-type sticks(Murphy's Mosquito Sticks on Amazon--worked great) during Happy Hour in the rotunda, but we over-prepared for the bug situation. Good breezes kept the bugs at bay or we were there during a period of low activity. Didn't run into many bugs at the beaches either.
If you're looking for a great 2BR in a quieter area, the Stonehouse is fantastic and we'd rebook it in a heartbeat. Took one star away (would have taken only a 1/2 star away but the site doesn't allow that) for the third BR, but highly recommend it.
A group of 5 adults stayed in Stone House May 5-10th. The owner, Will, was professional and prompt from start to finish. The house has a very open feel which is great. The pool was perfect, and the view was amazing. The property is a bit rough around the edges (some maintenance needs to be done), but overall it's very beautiful. We did have one night of heavy rains, and when we woke up in the morning our clothes that we left on the bedroom floors in both bedrooms were wet. Apparently water got in under the doors - just enough to make things damp. It was gone within a few hours. We did see a few cockroaches in the bathroom and kitchen, but I'll chalk that up to island living. We were also advised not to drink the water as it doesn't have a filter, so you'll need to buy your own water/beverages. Reading other reviews I was unsure of the downstairs bedroom, but it was just fine and plenty nice. Overall the place was very beautiful and serene. Add a bit more maintenance and things could be spectacular.
Fantastic management...great extras...everything was so "taken care of", that you simply could just unwind and drink in the exceptional views. 6 am, the first morning, my 11 year old is out by the pool, drawing the view in his sketch book...he turns and says, "I just can't believe it". He was right. 10 minutes to maho bay...perfect location. 5 minutes to Coral bay. Safe and Secure. Pool was great. A/C in the bedrooms was a great addition. We spent most of our time in the rotunda...Every meal...a very, very special place.
two 30 something couples stayed over new years this year (no kids). the house itself if beautiful, the views are incredible (you really don't get a sense from the photos) and the rotunda / pool deck were perfect for hanging out and outdoor dining. the house is well equipped with washer / dryer, dishwasher, wifi, ipod hookup and outdoor speakers. also, the owner and property management staff were very responsive / accommodating making everything really easy.
we were really happy to have stayed in coral bay vs. cruz bay, as it was much more peaceful and private. the house is close to some great restaurants, and a short drive from many amazing beaches.
for sure our best VRBO experience to date and we will definitely be back to the stonehouse (was just there, and honestly don't understand Anne's review - couldn't disagree more).
