About Beth

I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, a first generation American, whose parents fled Europe during WWII after being displaced from home and country. I grew up appreciating the freedoms so many sacrificed for and realized most things can quickly be lost. An education became important to me later in life when plan A failed. Now I work in special education as a speech pathologist where the resilience of the kids inspires me.

Why Beth chose Manistee

Having grown up, and still working & living in southeastern Wisconsin, people ask why I bought a condo way on the other side of Lake Michigan. I can only say that I felt so good there. It reminded me of being near a beach in southern California where I loved to watch the sun set. The water along northern Michigan seemed so clean and the sand so fine. I liked the quiet, peaceful setting that the condo & community offer, like relaxing on the porch of a local, family owned bakery with a piece of cake. I feel blessed to have a little retreat, and I hope that each guest that shares it, feels closer to nature and it's Creator while enjoying a safe and enjoyable stay. I absolutely love to hear from guests that such was the case.

The condo is very dated and could use a new coat of paint and a deep cleaning.

I am a former resident of Manistee, Michigan and enjoy visiting the area due to its natural beauty and many fond memories. The condo appeared neat at first impression, but it is very dated and upon closer inspection needed a new coat of paint and a deep cleaning, especially the baseboards and carpeting. The toilet overflowed three times during my stay. I cleaned this up to the best of my ability but would be hesitant to stay in this rental with small children who crawl on the floor due to the unsanitary conditions this poses. The owner texted me midweek and asked me to check and see if there was an extra set of sheets in the closet due to the previous tenants damaging the sheets during their stay. I'm not sure why you would only have one set of sheets for a condo rental. The condo has a murphy bed with a mattress that looks, feels and smells like the original mattress. Every time you move in the bed the mattress makes a squeaking noise. I left the bed down all week due to back problems and right before I was leaving at the end of my stay, I put the bed back up in the wall and the left side door would not close all the way. I did nothing to damage the door, but the owner is withholding my security deposit due to the door being off the track. Given how dated everything is, in my opinion it is just normal wear and tear. Finally, my daughter, who is a physcian in Florida, surprised me by flying to Michigan for the weekend for the purpose of seeing her beloved former home and helping me with the long drive back to Ohio. The condo owner is also using this as leverage to withhold my security deposit as she felt I should have called her first to get permission. This condo owner is very rule oriented, but only if it's in her favor. Her listing on Home Away states that her condo is dog friendly, but that is not true. Last year, my daughter and I tried to rent her unit with the intention of my daughter's dog joining us. The owner was adamant that dogs were not allowed and she stipulated that fact again this year when I inquired about renting the condo for myself . That should have been a red flag. I am a teacher living on a limited income. The security deposit is a significant amount of money for me to lose. I have used Home Away and VBRO for over thirty years with no problems. Be very cautious with this rental. The owner will give you a lengthy list of "condo rules" including rules for "dog guests".

Owner's Response: I believe this renter’s travel needs may be best accommodated by her owning her own vacation rental condo where she can write her own rules and be accountable only to herself. A bit of fact checking: -The previous renter was "kind" enough to message me that a sheet tore but they went ahead and purchased a new set of sheets. Since the cleaning lady didn't see them, I messaged Suzanne less than 24 hours after her check in (not midweek) to see if she could find them and let me know if they were still sealed in the pkg. If not still sealed, or if in the way, I might impose on her to ask cleaning staff to collect them. She said they were brand new/unused. I did not impose further. -My condo was managed by a property management company last year. The listing then and now states: "Dogs allowed with owner permission only". Past reviews give mention of approved canine visitors. I have not approved all dogs and Suzanne's may have been one denied, which was not intended to offend. It appears Suzanne never responded back to the manager to book. Since she inquired last year for her daughter and a dog, I asked her prior to this current booking if her daughter and the dog were also coming because her request only said 1 adult. "No daughter. No dog", per vrbo transcript. -Suzanne's review implies the entire $500 security deposit was never returned. I withheld $140 of a $500 deposit for a repair bill of $375, the remainder of which I could legitimately have left the renter responsible for based on construction repairmen’s report and cleaning staff report. No portion of the deposit was held longer than the 2 week return period stipulated in the contract. Suzanne never contacted me with any concerns, complaints or requests until after check out, other than writing to say that no pillows were available for her daughter (found later), hence the notice another person was in the unit. I messaged her about the picture of unreported damage that I was sent the day after she checked out. Within the next 10 days, I’ve had 4 threats of law suit between both Suzanne and her psychiatrist daughter. Additional entitlements expressed included: cleaning costs, pain and suffering, and medical bills for arm ailment, and per her review now, back pain, I assume. I have to commend the health department for recognizing when a complaint is unworthy of follow up. I commend vrbo for considering "the facts" before allowing a formal complaint to render a property in poor standing.

Great view, great location, cozy and well-equipped.

My mom, my dog, and I spent a relaxing girls week in this cozy condo. It was spotlessly clean, and it had everything we needed for a comfortable stay. It's right next door to the fitness center and indoor pool, so we could swim on colder days.

We were happy just hanging out, enjoying the view of the manmade lake from the deck, loveseat, or dining area. It's just a short walk to the beautiful Lake Michigan beach. The day after we got home, my mom texted me wanting to know when we could go back.

Great view, pool and hot tub were clean and well kept, and the condo was perfect. Comfortable bed, kitchen was well equipped, and everything was just as advertised. If I was forced to say something critical I would say the tv picture was poor and the bathroom faucet was difficult to control pressure and sprayed/splashed a bit. Neither of those issues had the least effect on a great stay.

The unit was perfect for the two of us with plenty of room. The decor, matching cups/bowls/plates, silverware far exceeded anything we have ever seen in rental unit. The view, the beaches, river boardwalk, the light house, town, restaurant all great.

Manistee has three sugar sand beaches (1st St, 5th Ave., and North Point) and lovely sunsets. A down town river walk from Manistee to lake Michigan passes along the city marina, still serving freighters. Charter boating, kayaking, canoeing available. Historic trolly tour passes 19th/20th century architecture. Summer park concerts in the area. Real peaceful, small town feel without the "crowds" in many resort areas. Just outside Manistee is a casino, Douglas Valley Vineyard, Orchard Beach State Park. Drive a half hour to Ludington State Park, Arcadia Bluffs, and other hiking trails, biking trails, ski trails. Sleeping Bear Dunes Nat'l Park is an hour north with small town cafe's antique shops along the way. Opportunities for ferry rides to islands in the north and plane rides from Manistee. Summer festivals in the neighboring communities. Several golf courses within an hour. Fall is lovely with color and farm markets.

Rates are subject to change until reservation is confirmed. There always remains a possibility of temporary closure of pools if need arises. If requesting a reservation, please provide phone # or e-mail to verify details prior to confirming the reservation as I only have 24 hours to accept. Please note that during winter months, television channels may be limited if on "seasonal".
Terms of rental are:
1. Check-in time: after 4:00 p.m. Check-out time: 10:00 a.m.
2. A $35 re-tooling charge will be assessed for any owner keys not returned to the property
3. Well behaved dogs allowed on this property with special permission and a signed agreement to terms
stipulated in pet guidelines.
4. No smoking allowed in this unit.
5. Guests are expected to abide by Harbor Village / Association rules. Failure to comply with rules may be
cause for termination of rental agreement and inability to use the amenities of Harbor Village.
6. Quiet time hours in the community are from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.
7. If more than the allowed number of people are known to be staying in the unit, the security deposit may
not be returned; the agreement may terminate, or both may occur.
8. No boats or trailers are allowed in parking areas of Harbor Village. You may contact owner for
information about any possible off-site storage facilities or for info. on boat slip rental information.
9. Security deposit will be returned to the renter by the owner within two weeks following the end of the
Rental, if the leased property is left in satisfactory condition and all terms of this rental agreement have
been upheld.
10. Cancellation policy is as stipulated in this listing.
The property owner, Harbor Village Master, all affiliated Associations and management/service providers are not responsible for any accidents, personal injuries to any guests, any alleged misrepresentations, any damage or loss of any property, possessions or valuables of any kind, or temporary inconveniences related to acts of God.

  • 100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
