Overview

About the property

Nature is calling. This charming 2000 square foot home sits on 160 acres east of Santa Margarita on a private gated ranch. The home is located in a valley and is surrounded by large rock formations, hills, oaks, and pines; lovely views from every window. There are several (hilly) hiking/riding trails, and a seasonal creek runs through the property. There is a horse corral and hitching posts if you would like to bring your horses. For a number of reasons this is not an appropriate site for a wedding.

The post and beam construction and custom woodwork throughout the home are breath taking. There are 2 master suites (each with a full bath) and a sleeping loft. A second loft overlooking the living room has a desk where you may set up your laptop and use the free WiFi. There is no cell service but a land line is available for your use. The vaulted ceiling living room has a gorgeous stone wood burning fireplace. The covered front porch is a great place to relax and watch the local wildlife (pretty much every critter that lives in this county could wander by) or to enjoy a glass of wine. You will enjoy cooking in the fully equipped kitchen and having your meals at the kitchen table where you can take in the lovely views. The laundry area is equipped with a utility sink, washer and dryer. Additional creature comforts: central air conditioning, AppleTV, DVD player, jetted tub. While the location is a little remote, there is a boutique winery Soaring Hawk (weekends by reservation) at the adjoining property, and it is only half an hour from many great places, San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Templeton, Avila Beach, and Morro Bay. The home is about 6 miles from the little town of Santa Margarita, right off the 101 freeway north of the Cuesta Grade from San Luis Obispo. It has a gourmet restaurant, The Range, Ancient Peaks winery, ziplining, Dunbar brewery, Porch Cafe, Home Santa Margarita (features Joanna Gaines furnishings) and a few other spots for you to discover.

If just want to "chill" that works too!

About Stephen Peterson and Karen Willer

I was born in California and raised in the little (then) town of Turlock. After I went to college to be a materials engineer I moved east and spent the last 38 years as a patent attorney for a law firm in Washington DC. When I retired I wanted to come to the Central Coast and live on a ranch and bought Whisper Valley. I hunt (not in Whisper Valley), I am an amateur photographer, and restore old English and Italian motorcycles. I lived on the property for two years and met Karen who has a ranch in Creston. She is a retired high school college guidance counselor. We are now married and live on the Creston ranch, We stay in Whisper Valley often to visit the "wilderness."

Stephen Peterson and Karen Willer purchased this house in 2013

Why Stephen Peterson and Karen Willer chose Central Coast

Whisper Valley is a unique small valley in the Santa Lucia mountains. It is very hilly and steep, covered with Oak with a few pines. It has caves, cliffs and, while remote enough to be quiet and peaceful, it is only 17 minutes from town. There is so much wildlife in the valley it is rare that we don't see a deer, turkey, fox, coyote, or quail. The house is like a story book cottage with interior woodwork that is unique and beautiful.

What makes this house unique

It is the wilderness with the amenities that make being in the wilderness comfortable.

If you want to unwind from normal life, this is the place!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful trip. The home is remote but in a good way. It has everything you need and is very clean. The beds are wonderful! Santa Margarita is a cute town. SLO has some great restaurants.... but to be honest we loved just hanging out at the house, exploring the trails, enjoying the wildflowers and dreaming of retiring to a small holding!

Ahhhh but back to work.....

Thank you Steve and Karen for sharing your dream come true!

Great Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This place is as advertised and then some. We spent a very nice weekend enjoying the peace and quiet and scenery. The house is comfortable, clean and well-equipped, with very spacious bedrooms and baths. The property is beautiful, with lots of trails. We didn't budge from there all weekend, except for an enjoyable visit to the winery next door. We are looking forward to a return visit. Karen and Steve were very easy to work with.

Beautiful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

This is an amazing spot tucked away with privacy. Just what we were looking for. We had hoped to hike with our dogs and just relax reading a book. Unfortunately the worsed storm of the winter hit the weekend we had rented. We did not get to do the hiking but the house was very comfortable and cozy. We kept a fire going, read and watched movies. We drove into San Luis Obispo and Morro Rock when the weather broke to have lunch and walk around. The owners were easy to contact and very helpful. The cabin itself was beautifully designed and has everything you need. The beds were very comfortable and the bathrooms were beautiful with great showers. One word of advice...write down or print out the info on how to get through the electric gate. When they say no cell reception they are right. I unfortunately neglected to write out the passcode to get on the property's I left it on an email. Fortunately there are pockets of reception on the main road so we didn't have to go far to get it. I would highly recommend this rental.

Fabulous Views

  • 4 of 5

Our first time to VRBO, so can't compare. Great accommodations for two couples, each bedroom had a bathroom. Beds were comfortable but if you need extra blankets and pillows bring them. Bathrooms were large and very nice. Really enjoyed the living area with fireplace. Only two people had good seats with lighting for reading. Plenty of wood for fires, need to look hard for the newspaper to begin fires, we bought presto fire logs. No cell service, but had Wifi. Water is soft and different taste, advise bringing a Brita filter pitcher. Glad we arrived during daylight as was somewhat difficult to find. The remoteness was great, only 20 minutes from Santa Margarieta. The men brought their guns for target practice. MUST call the winery close by for appointment, very worth it. Might need to bring charcoal if you will BBQ. We would come here again!

Owner's Response: Dear Fred, Jeri, and friends, We are happy you enjoyed the country views and some wine tasting at Soaring Hawk. We have added to the listing description the fact that Soaring Hawk is open on weekends by appointment. Fabulous wines! Sorry there was no kindling for your fire, an oversight on our part that it had run out. There is a box of fatwood for guests which works great. We look forward to having you visit again! Peaceful Whisper Valley

  • 5 of 5

Whisper Valley is amazing! It was the perfect "getaway" from the chaos of everyday life. The cabin was clean and firewood stocked high. We did one visit to the grocery store in SLO on our way in. Our children who normally are on phones, tvs, or tablets, spent the days outside playing or hiking. We had an amazing time exploring the many trails on the property during the day, then sitting by the large fireplace at night. Safety information was provided upon our arrival: fire, emergency, and wildlife were all addressed. There was no cell service at the cabin, but strong wifi. It was just the time our family needed to reconnect with each other. We will most definitely be returning.

While the property is an isolated valley in the Santa Lucia mountains, off a country road, it is 17 minutes from the small town of Santa Margarita and just over the Cuesta Grade from Cal Poly. While dress is informal, Santa Margarita has a world-class restaurant, The Range (closed Sunday and Monday and cash only). Dinner there for two with wine and dessert will break $100. There is a small boutique winery literally right next door, Soaring Hawk. Whisper Valley is 40 minutes from the Pacific Ocean, with beaches at Avila, Pismo, and Morro Bay. There is abundant wildlife on the property, all the species native to San Luis Obispo County except, Tule Elk and Pronghorn Antelope. Santa Margarita Ranch has winery and vineyard tours as well as a zip line adventure leaving from "downtown" Santa Margarita. As noted elsewhere, the property is located in the center of the Central Coast wineries with over 300 wineries in the county alone. Edna Valley and San Ynez valleys are about 30 minutes and 1 hour away respectively.
