Nature is calling. This charming 2000 square foot home sits on 160 acres east of Santa Margarita on a private gated ranch. The home is located in a valley and is surrounded by large rock formations, hills, oaks, and pines; lovely views from every window. There are several (hilly) hiking/riding trails, and a seasonal creek runs through the property. There is a horse corral and hitching posts if you would like to bring your horses. For a number of reasons this is not an appropriate site for a wedding.
The post and beam construction and custom woodwork throughout the home are breath taking. There are 2 master suites (each with a full bath) and a sleeping loft. A second loft overlooking the living room has a desk where you may set up your laptop and use the free WiFi. There is no cell service but a land line is available for your use. The vaulted ceiling living room has a gorgeous stone wood burning fireplace. The covered front porch is a great place to relax and watch the local wildlife (pretty much every critter that lives in this county could wander by) or to enjoy a glass of wine. You will enjoy cooking in the fully equipped kitchen and having your meals at the kitchen table where you can take in the lovely views. The laundry area is equipped with a utility sink, washer and dryer. Additional creature comforts: central air conditioning, AppleTV, DVD player, jetted tub. While the location is a little remote, there is a boutique winery Soaring Hawk (weekends by reservation) at the adjoining property, and it is only half an hour from many great places, San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Templeton, Avila Beach, and Morro Bay. The home is about 6 miles from the little town of Santa Margarita, right off the 101 freeway north of the Cuesta Grade from San Luis Obispo. It has a gourmet restaurant, The Range, Ancient Peaks winery, ziplining, Dunbar brewery, Porch Cafe, Home Santa Margarita (features Joanna Gaines furnishings) and a few other spots for you to discover.
If just want to "chill" that works too!
I was born in California and raised in the little (then) town of Turlock. After I went to college to be a materials engineer I moved east and spent the last 38 years as a patent attorney for a law firm in Washington DC. When I retired I wanted to come to the Central Coast and live on a ranch and bought Whisper Valley. I hunt (not in Whisper Valley), I am an amateur photographer, and restore old English and Italian motorcycles. I lived on the property for two years and met Karen who has a ranch in Creston. She is a retired high school college guidance counselor. We are now married and live on the Creston ranch, We stay in Whisper Valley often to visit the "wilderness."
Stephen Peterson and Karen Willer purchased this house in 2013
Whisper Valley is a unique small valley in the Santa Lucia mountains. It is very hilly and steep, covered with Oak with a few pines. It has caves, cliffs and, while remote enough to be quiet and peaceful, it is only 17 minutes from town. There is so much wildlife in the valley it is rare that we don't see a deer, turkey, fox, coyote, or quail. The house is like a story book cottage with interior woodwork that is unique and beautiful.
It is the wilderness with the amenities that make being in the wilderness comfortable.
Our first time to VRBO, so can't compare. Great accommodations for two couples, each bedroom had a bathroom. Beds were comfortable but if you need extra blankets and pillows bring them. Bathrooms were large and very nice. Really enjoyed the living area with fireplace. Only two people had good seats with lighting for reading. Plenty of wood for fires, need to look hard for the newspaper to begin fires, we bought presto fire logs. No cell service, but had Wifi. Water is soft and different taste, advise bringing a Brita filter pitcher. Glad we arrived during daylight as was somewhat difficult to find. The remoteness was great, only 20 minutes from Santa Margarieta. The men brought their guns for target practice. MUST call the winery close by for appointment, very worth it. Might need to bring charcoal if you will BBQ. We would come here again!
Whisper Valley is amazing! It was the perfect "getaway" from the chaos of everyday life. The cabin was clean and firewood stocked high. We did one visit to the grocery store in SLO on our way in. Our children who normally are on phones, tvs, or tablets, spent the days outside playing or hiking. We had an amazing time exploring the many trails on the property during the day, then sitting by the large fireplace at night. Safety information was provided upon our arrival: fire, emergency, and wildlife were all addressed. There was no cell service at the cabin, but strong wifi. It was just the time our family needed to reconnect with each other. We will most definitely be returning.
Over the river and through the woods to the most enchanting cottage/cabin I've ever seen! The drive to get there is part of it's charm, and once you turn the slight bend and see the cabin it will take your breath away! I had the pleasure of staying with my husband, mother in law, and two pups for a weekend getaway. The home offered every possible amenity: comfy beds with soft bedding, nice sofas to snuggle up on for reading, a fully stocked kitchen, and lovely bathrooms. Oh, and the VIEWS! I'm pretty sure there wasn't a single room in the house that doesn't have a lovely view of the outdoors. Make sure to read through the binder they leave for you on the kitchen table; it's got tons of great recommendations for local activities, places to eat, and things to do. If you're a Fixer Upper fan, there's a new home decor store in downtown Santa Margarita that we stopped by based on Karen & Steve's recommendations--we were not disappointed! I was in Joanna Gaines heaven! Our one regret was that we couldn't stay longer to fully enjoy all that this amazing rental has to offer--hiking trails, morning coffee on the porch, and a stunning fireplace for when the weather cools. We definitely hope to be back!
This is a fabulous work of art, well out of the way. The house/cabin has a spacious master suite and family room. The extra bedroom and loft provide extra space for other guests (kids, etc), but are perfectly adequate for other adults as well. The outdoor space is VERY useable and ample, with porch and stone patios and walkways. The woodwork is extensive with contouring of windows, railings and other appointments. It creates a cabin feel with high end charm.
My priorities are comfortable beds (they scored an A+), "floppable furniture" in communal areas (another A+), and everything in good repair (grand slam).
The property is rural and very useable for hiking and general outdoor activity. There is abundant wildlife. All very private. The owners are refreshingly reasonable people and a pleasure to deal with. We will be back.
The cottage is very well appointed, with comfortable beds, a stocked kitchen, roomy bathrooms, kids toys and a selection of dvds for guests to enjoy, and clear instructions on how to use everything. The actual space is quite unique - so much care was put into the design and details of the home. The front porch is a wonderful extension of the living space. The hosts were responsive and hospitable. It was truly a peaceful, restful and lovely place to spend a weekend.
We just spent our weekend in this lovely house with our kids. We were 4 of us and thoroughly loved the entire house, the nature, the quietness. The entire experience was very relaxing and rejuvenating. Hiking in the trail and enjoying the nature, the view and bird chirping noise was absolutey awesome. The house was equipped with lot of stuff and basic essentials.
Seating in the porch and listening to the wind blowing and noise of only few birds chirping hear and there, took me back to down the memory lane from my childhood. (Back home in villages from India), felt very nostalgic!
Thanks Karen and Steve for being so quick and responsive to all our questions. Your house is very elegant, nicely furnished and well equipped to attend guest's need. We loved the entire stay and experience and will recommend to our friends and definately look forward to come back again!
While the property is an isolated valley in the Santa Lucia mountains, off a country road, it is 17 minutes from the small town of Santa Margarita and just over the Cuesta Grade from Cal Poly. While dress is informal, Santa Margarita has a world-class restaurant, The Range (closed Sunday and Monday and cash only). Dinner there for two with wine and dessert will break $100. There is a small boutique winery literally right next door, Soaring Hawk. Whisper Valley is 40 minutes from the Pacific Ocean, with beaches at Avila, Pismo, and Morro Bay. There is abundant wildlife on the property, all the species native to San Luis Obispo County except, Tule Elk and Pronghorn Antelope. Santa Margarita Ranch has winery and vineyard tours as well as a zip line adventure leaving from "downtown" Santa Margarita. As noted elsewhere, the property is located in the center of the Central Coast wineries with over 300 wineries in the county alone. Edna Valley and San Ynez valleys are about 30 minutes and 1 hour away respectively.
