Overview

About the property

House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-10) - Very close to town...

If you are adventurous and free spirited, but still require all the amenities a luxury rental home has to offer then Pu`uhonua ('Place of Refuge') is the place for you. Experience tropical Hawaii at it’s finest in this unique pole house nestled just above Kealakekua Bay ('Pathway of the Gods') in Captain Cook, Hawaii. At this elevation you will enjoy the perfect climate and sweeping 180+ degree views of the ocean, Mauna Loa and Kealakekua Bay, in a quiet and comfortable setting.

Convenient location, just a moment away from the town of Captain Cook, with all of its amenities including one of the islands best grocery stores, fantastic restaurants, local shops and a wonderful farmers market.

Watch breathtaking sunsets from the spacious upper lanai that wraps around the house. Just 20 miles south of Kailua-Kona Airport, Pu`uhonua House is minutes from an array of activities including horseback riding, hiking, tennis, diving, dolphin and seasonal whale watching. Rent kayaks and kayak across the majestic Kealakekua Bay, swim with spinner dolphins and snorkel one of Hawaii’s best kept secrets, the Captain Cook monument.

Enjoy a variety of tropical fruits and flora grown on the property such as bananas, papayas, lemons, avocados, breadfruit, macadamia, coffee and mangos. We are close to some of south Kona’s finest beaches and minutes from great swimming, snorkeling and child safe beaches like Hookena, Manini, Keei, and Kealakekua Bay.

Pu`uhonua House (Place of Refuge House) was built in 1988 by a physicist and his wife. As a former sailor he and his wife had traveled to many parts of the world, before they chose this spot to build their dream home where they would eventually retire. Being a physicist he was intrigued by the simplicity and structural durability a pole house has to offer. Supported by nine thirty foot tall cedar poles imported from Washington state, this house unlike traditionally constructed homes, has a more open floor plan allowing for more glass. The main living level perimeter is nearly all glass/view. You feel as though you are part of your beautiful surroundings. All of the structural and finish components of the house were all hand crafted on site. The property is a one acre private parcel located in the McCoy Plantation subdivision, once a coffee plantation. Much of the property is still rich with coffee plants and certain times of the year the air is thick with the sweet scent of the blossom. If you like peace and tranquility then you will enjoy this piece of paradise.

About The Owner

Aloha. My Name is Rowan. My mother and father, Bruce & Nikki, fell in love with this very special piece of paradise. It is a unique Hawaiin style home on a very peaceful private 1 acre lot in the town of Captain Cook.

The Owner purchased this house in 2004

Why The Owner chose Honaunau-Napoopoo

We vacationed for may years on the Big Island, staying on all parts of the island. We fell in love with the Captain Cook area because of its proximity to everything, the local culture, the coastal access and all the town has to offer.

What makes this house unique

Captain Cook is a great location for your family vacation. We are close to many beautiful coastal destinations, great shopping, restaurants and a perfect location to explore all that the Big Island has to offer. You are in a great location for day trips and close to Kailua Kona. We have some of the best snokeling, kayaking and surfing spots on the Island.

Pu'uhonua House - Captain Cook

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at Pu'uhonua House in Captain Cook over Thanksgiving. The house is secluded and private. The wrap around lanais with plenty of bistro tables and chairs are perfect for enjoying the spectacular view of the ocean as well as the lush foliage. The interior was immaculate and the house was equipped with everything we needed for a Thanksgiving feast. The location was perfect as a base from which to explore other parts of the Island. There was a well-stocked super market with a bank ATM inside about a 5 minute drive away. The owner, Bruce, met us at the house and gave us a quick rundown of things. We didn't see him after our initial meeting, but we knew he was immediately available if we needed him. We would definitely return to this lovely piece of paradise.

Exceeded High Expectations

  • 5 of 5

This property exceeded even my high expectations! Coming down the drive set the mood with it's beautiful lush landscaping that is present out every window including the bathrooms! The view of the shoreline amidst the lovely bird song by dawn and frog sounds by eve was truly magical. I can honestly say I was "in the moment" over the full four days. All of us (including 2 teenagers) felt total contentment and though we loved exploring we could have just stayed in the house and read, cooked, hung out. So relaxing and truly special.

The house was immaculate - it was freeing to be barefoot the entire time. The comfortable beds had beautiful fresh plant imagery quilts. The house was lovingly designed and cared for. The solid sliding glass and screen doors are elegant. Experiencing the warm downpour from under the eves was a treat.

Bruce and Dan were available to answer all of our questions about the area.

We will definitely return!

Beautiful house, amazing view and great location.

  • 5 of 5

Very unique house with an amazing view! Very comfortable beds and kithchen is stocked for cooking for large or small group. The location is ideal for experiencing south Kona which is one of the most beautiful places in the world. There is access to all the beach and snorkel gear you will need and options to rent paddle boards and kayaks. Its very close to town but far enough away that you get a more unique experience.

Stunning home and views

  • 4 of 5

Great, unique home with the most amazing views! A lot of local construction noise during the day and dogs barking in neighborhood at night. However, home itself is great, kitchen and living room open with cathedral ceiling, neat loft , and amazing wrap around lanais. Thanks so much for sharing your home.

Owner's Response: The barking dog has been dealt with. Some neighbors were out of town and their dog was not happy about it.. And the local remodel project is a couple of weeks away from completion. They have been mindful of all of the neighbors and only work during the week during business hours.

Incredible 5 star home with panoramic views

  • 5 of 5

Wow! This was truly the type of paradise one envisions when coming to Hawaii. It feels like you are perched luxuriously in the trees, the Place of Refuge down below, the turquoise waters with stunning corals, fish, turtles and joyous pods of dolphins. We had the vacation of our dreams!
