Pu`uhonua House (Place of Refuge House) was built in 1988 by a physicist and his wife. As a former sailor he and his wife had traveled to many parts of the world, before they chose this spot to build their dream home where they would eventually retire. Being a physicist he was intrigued by the simplicity and structural durability a pole house has to offer. Supported by nine thirty foot tall cedar poles imported from Washington state, this house unlike traditionally constructed homes, has a more open floor plan allowing for more glass. The main living level perimeter is nearly all glass/view. You feel as though you are part of your beautiful surroundings. All of the structural and finish components of the house were all hand crafted on site. The property is a one acre private parcel located in the McCoy Plantation subdivision, once a coffee plantation. Much of the property is still rich with coffee plants and certain times of the year the air is thick with the sweet scent of the blossom. If you like peace and tranquility then you will enjoy this piece of paradise.

Aloha. My Name is Rowan. My mother and father, Bruce & Nikki, fell in love with this very special piece of paradise. It is a unique Hawaiin style home on a very peaceful private 1 acre lot in the town of Captain Cook.
Owner purchased this House in 2004
Why Owner chose Honaunau-Napoopoo
We vacationed for may years on the Big Island, staying on all parts of the island. We fell in love with the Captain Cook area because of its proximity to everything, the local culture, the coastal access and all the town has to offer.
What makes this House unique
Captain Cook is a great location for your family vacation. We are close to many beautiful coastal destinations, great shopping, restaurants and a perfect location to explore all that the Big Island has to offer. You are in a great location for day trips and close to Kailua Kona. We have some of the best snokeling, kayaking and surfing spots on the Island.

Wonderful house in Captain Cook
We had a fine 5-day stay at Pu'uhonua House in Captain Cook. The house was clean, comfortable, amply appointed and affords a spectacular view of the coast, including the south portion of Kealakekua Bay. The kitchen had everything we needed for making our own meals. Beach towels, chairs, and umbrella were provided. The house is a short drive from Napoopoo where we rented kayaks, paddled to the Monument, and enjoyed excellent snorkeling. It is also only a short drive to Pu'uhonua o Honaunau (city of refuge, ancient Hawaiian history park) and two-step for more great snorkeling. There is a ChoiceMart grocery store conveniently located just up the highway. We had one small problem (internet wasn't working on arrival) which was addressed promptly by the owner, who was great to deal with. The grounds around the house present a lovely mixture of tropical foliage. Beautiful to view, but with no "lawn" to sit on. But then the open design of the interior and surrounding glass/screen doors bring the outdoors inside. There is also a 3/4 surround lanai. The trees around the house are home to many noisy frogs, which may be a problem for some light sleepers. We enjoyed the sounds.
Beautiful views and great location on the Big Island
Perfect property for our large group of family members. The house is as described and as others have noted, the pictures do not do the view justice. Bruce was very helpful in providing recommendations and showing us the details of the house. When we had questions, he was quick to respond via text which was great. Kitchen had all you need to prepare meals and having a propane grill on the lanai was super helpful. The location of the house was outside of town so it was quiet and relaxing, but close enough that it wasn't an issue to do and see things. 10 minutes to get to awesome snorkeling at Two Step, 20 or so minutes to Kona, Magic Sands, and other beach areas. If we return to the Big Island, I would absolutely stay here again.
Head-spinning views of the ocean from this "treehouse"
This unique home is built like a treehouse, except it stands sturdily on volcanic rock. The main living area is a huge screened porch, walled with glass. Without exaggeration, you're on a thousand foot cliff overlooking the vast Pacific ocean below. The house is cool for sure, but the views will blow your mind.
Indoors, the finish is all wood. The kitchen is well-equipped with dishes, cutlery, cookware, and a heavy-duty Ninja blender. We used the outdoor propane grill nearly every night - having a good kitchen is key for us as a family, as it saves us a bundle to be able to cook at home instead of dining out. Beds were comfortable, ample towels, lots of extras like boogie boards, sand toys and lounge chairs. The children had a marvelous time climbing up the ladder to the loft. And down again. And discovering the green, red-spotted geckos that also inhabit the home. And watching the pretty guinea fowl from next door peck about. Our 5-yr-old was upset to realize we had to leave at some point.
The property has coffee, coconut, papaya, and lemon trees on it. Bruce said we were free to pick what's ripe (our youngest picked a lemon and it became her best friend) and brought us a bunch of tiny, delicious bananas. It has a large garden full of tropical flowers and ornamentals, studded with a'a, which is kept simultaneously groomed and lush. I recognized one of the huge bushes as the same type of plant I got back in Wisconsin in a small pot. Everything here grows like crazy.
It's one of the best properties we've stayed at to date, and that helped us have the time of our lives on the Big Island. Thanks to Bruce and his team for a job very well done.
Could not have asked for a more perfect place. Beautiful and relaxing. Clean , unique and fun.
Property is unique and a treasure. The whole time you are here you keep thinking about when you can come back. Town is charming, locals are great and the location is perfect for a little more immersion into the Kona life. You just feel the energy of Hawaii here..
There are so many nice things to say about this house that it can slightly obfuscate the single most amazing feature - there is a wrap around deck with a wrap around sliding door system that looks out to the most eye popping views you can imagine. If I wasn't so busy enjoying myself on the island I would have spent every waking hour out there. Yes, there are pictures you can see here, but they just don't do it justice.
One thing to note that might be meaningful to you. There is a large master bedroom on the first floor that is a separate entry, though just a step from the entry to the rest of the house. If you are looking for extra privacy, this is good, if you are watching over a brood of kids, perhaps not. For us it was inconsequential and we didn't even use it, but it is worth noting.
Kayak across beautiful Kealakekua Bay to Captain Cooks Monument for unbelievable snorkeling.
