Among the captivating beauty of the Elk Mountains of Colorado, here you find Hassford Gulch nestled in a secluded hillside outside Crested Butte, Colorado. One of the last great Colorado ski towns, Crested Butte is the perfect destination for nature lovers and sports enthusiasts alike in search of luxury in a welcoming, unique, peaceful community. Crested Butte is home to both winter and summer activities. In summer, Crested Butte is known as the “Wildflower Capital of Colorado,” and draws photographers, golfers, mountain bikers, skiers, and fishermen. The native vegetation fills the historic Victorian town with bright bursts of color during the spring, summer and autumn months, while the national forest transforms the outdoors into a playground for rock climbing, four-wheeling, white water rafting, and world-class fly fishing. In the winter, one may enjoy snowmobiling and snowshoeing in the great outdoors, along with Alpine and Nordic skiing, and ice sports between the two localities of Crested Butte Mountain Resort and the Crested Butte Nordic Center. Hassford Gulch is located adjacent to the Robert Trent Jones II-designed golf course and the Gunnison National Forest with hiking and mountain biking trail just outside your doorway.
ARCHITECTURE AND SETTING
With 7,864 square feet on 2.2 acres, the 6-bedroom, 5-full and 3-half bathroom estate is expansive enough to entertain in luxury, yet thoughtfully laid out so that every space is intimate and self-contained. Constructed by local builders and craftsmen, and set in front of one of the state’s most iconic mountain ranges, Hassford Gulch is proudly and unmistakably a Colorado home at heart. Yet, the estate’s fixtures and materials, having been curated from around the world, imbue Hassford Gulch with a worldly elegance. Materials from around the world have been incorporated into the home’s design, from the white oak ceilings recovered from old Pennsylvanian warehouses to antique cooking pots from India repurposed as basin and bar sinks. With spacious living room, dining room, English bar and private office space there is plenty of room to accommodate large family gatherings.
LUXURIOUS PRIVATE SPACES.
After a long day outdoors, guests can enjoy the amazing sunset on the west patio before unwinding in the steam and body jet shower. Those who would prefer to socialize can congregate at the authentic pub bar, imported from England. For avid readers, the home’s five interior fireplaces all compete for most desirable hearth to snuggle up next to and open a book. Five of the six bedrooms have full baths en-suite. The sixth bedroom is a bunk room that accommodates four additional guests. One of the bedroom suites below stairs offers a private space suitable for au pair or housekeeper.
Crested Butte, Colorado isn’t just one more ski town. This year it was “Powder Magazine’s” number one choice as the best ski town in the North America. If skiing isn’t the family’s only interest, no worries. It is also the Colorado wildflower capital which is celebrated in spring along with a daunting list of festivals, parades and activities that span almost every month of the year. Some of these include Torchlight, New Years, Winter Carnival, and Mardi Gras during the winter, and when spring wakes up, it’s time for Extreme Board Fest, Slushuck and Flaushink (go there to find out), just as a warm up to summer.
The beginning of summer starts out with the Crested Butte Bike Week and continues with the Crested Butte Music Festival, International Film Festival, 4th of July celebrations, the Wildflower Festival, of course, the Alpenglow Concert Series, Festival of the Arts and Ball Bash. But it doesn’t stop there. The fall season welcomes in the Fall Fest, Vinitok and the Paragon Peoples’ Fair. For those who like to do and not just observe, summers offer hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, whitewater rafting and kayaking, four wheeling, golf and fishing. Winter sports fans’ appetites are satiated with some of the best backcountry skiing in Colorado along with downhill skiing and snowboarding at Crested Butte Mountain Resort.

We stayed in Hassford Gulch for a week during the late summer season and had a spectacular time! This is a spacious home with a formal English Manor, yet cozy and inviting in every space it has, being it a bedroom, living room, kitchen or outdoor patio. There is a stunning view of the Elk Mountains form every angle possible, which adds to the beauty and peacefulness the house already has. Its convenient location to ski lifts, walking trails, a private golf course, and to the town of Crested Butte gives one so many options to choose from for day activities. Enjoying the dreamy sunsets from the patio or the very spacious living or dining room is such a treat! The house is also equipped with every amenity one will need during a vacation, and I must mention the comfortable theater room and bar it has on the first floor! Convenience, comfort, beauty; all together it is a treat to stay in Hassford Gulch!
Life Is Good
What a dream! We have been twice to Hassford Gulch, once in the summer and once in ski season. Both are spectacular when you are staying in this spectacular home. Our son loves to golf and our daughter loves to snow ski so it is the best of both worlds. Right on the golf course and only about 5 minutes to the ski area. Even though the home is palatial it still has such a nice cozy at home feeling. There is plenty of places to escape and have some alone time and there are several nice big areas for larger groups to congregate and mingle. This home will satisfy the needs of families with children from all ages. The views from every room are picturesque and the less than 5 minute travel time to Crested Butte is fabulous. Everything from the decor to the views to the amenities to the convenience is something to behold!
Hassford Gulch exceeds every expectation that I could imagine. It is a magnificent home strategically designed to bring the beauty of the surrounding mountains into every room. This home uniquely combines the formality of an English Manor with a welcoming Western influence. The floor plan on the main level provides for every kind of entertaining opportunity. Stunning works of English furnishing and art fill the living room, dining room and study. The kitchen has state of the art appliances including a pasta sink and every amenity that a gourmet chef could desire.
Downstairs, family and friends can gather in the comfortable theater room and Buffalo Bar for movies, cards, board games and other evening activities. I stayed in the Travelers Room, appropriately named for its outside entrance and personal kitchen. Another bedroom downstairs is named Oh Be Joyful as it sits directly facing the entrance to the Oh Be Joyful Mine high in the mountains. That nomenclature sums up the Hasford Gulch experience.
Simply put, Hassford Gulch offers everything you could want from a Colorado vacation.
Hassford Gulch is well suited for a variety of "get away groups". This group was a ladies only group attending the Crested Butte Film Festival. They had a great time not only at the house but also taking advantage of all the community has to offer. Other groups who have stayed at Hassford Gulch include: extended family gatherings celebrating anniversaries, family reunions, and home base for other family members to come and go; small corporate/company planning retreats; ski groups; golf groups; and those who just want a "get away' vacation in the mountains.
Where to start? Hassford Gulch offers so much more than anticipated. It is a magical place nestled within hiking distance of the charming town of Crested Butte and has every possible amenity and then some. I liked the decor--the owners have done a good job of adding historical touches and interesting elements that say, "Hey, settle here for awhile and read a good book, or visit with friends, or just sit and take it all in," there being a lot of nooks and crannies for such. The area boasts plenty to do, even if you're not a skier. Shopping is good, the restaurants are all terrific, and the locals are friendly. We had a ball!
There is a reason that the locals (and each new visitor) call the Upper Gunnison Valley, "The Edge of Paradise". And as one local architect said when standing on the balcony at Hassford Gulch looking at the surroundings, he said, "You know, there is not a bad view in this valley --but standing here, I can't think of a better one."
This place is incredible!!! It's a castle filled with gorgeous antiques and yet totally comfortable. The kitchen is a chef's dream, the theater offers entertainment for everyone, the views from every window are like beautiful paintings, hiking trails are nearby and much more. The owners are most helpful and keep it extremely well-maintained. It's private and yet just a short drive into town. I couldn't recommend it more highly!!!
Golfing, alpine and cross-country skiing; snow-shoeing; ice skating; hiking, biking, fly fishing, rafting, horseback riding, shopping in the national historic district town of Crested Butte, superb restaurants, live theater, movies, special events, and musical performances.
