Charming, cheerful, and private two bedroom cottage sits right on Holmes Harbor. The master bedroom has a king size bed; the kid's bunkroom sleeps four. Enjoy your morning coffee on the east facing deck with spectacular views of the harbor, and spend your evenings around the fire pit roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. The large front yard is surrounded by a photinia hedge, making the property very private. There is also an orchard with eight fruit trees. Cooks will delight in the well equipped kitchen. Enjoy the bounty of the sea with plentiful mussels and clams off the beach. There are so many simple wonders to keep you entertained on the property that it's sometimes hard to get out to discover the rest of the island!

About Kara Bruns
We are the third generation of my family to have a home on Holmes Harbor. My parents purchased and still own the cabin just to the north of ours when I was a toddler. Three decades later my husband and I had the opportunity to buy our house. Back in the 1940's our property served as a herring farm. We live in Seattle and try to make it up to Whidbey whenever possible. As our kids are getting older, there are often activities that keep us from making the trip to the island. Whidbey is a beloved place to our family and friends; we are happy to share it's peace and beauty with you.
Kara Bruns purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Kara Bruns chose Freeland
Our house is just a ten minute drive from the ferry terminal in Clinton. A large grocery store is only 1.5 miles away in the town center of Freeland. The charming seaside town of Langley, with its many art galleries, boutiques, and specialty stores, is just ten miles to the east. Despite the proximity to many of Whidbey's many attractions, it's easy to simply spend all day perfectly entertained by the peaceful environs of our property. Our home is located on a quiet residential road and surrounded by large photinia hedge, making it very private. There is an orchard with eight fruit trees on the northwest corner of the property. We frequently have visits from eagles, deer, sea otters, and harbor seals. When the tide goes out, mussels can be easily pulled off the pilings of the pier. There are also copious clams and Dungeness crab in the harbor (with the proper permits of course!). Turn over a beach rock to find dozens of little crab scampering about. There is so much natural wonder all around.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our home sits very close to the water, so you will enjoy a very proximate view of the harbor. We are fortunate to have a pier, not to mention a large and private yard on the front side of the house. You will enjoy the new deck we had rebuilt in January 2015. Our latest addition to the property is a fire pit- perfect for summer grilling and s'mores, of course. While some of the beaches at Whidbey can fill up with many people, you will enjoy our beach all to yourselves. If you have a paddle board, kayak, or inflatable boat, bring it up to explore the harbor. There is also a boat launch at Freehand park, just a half mile away. It's a place that offers quintessential summertime fun.
Best Location, Wonderful Property!
We enjoyed this property from July 23 to September 1, 2018. We can’t possibly describe how wonderful our stay was, so I will just hit the highlights. First, the house itself is a beautifully restored small home with bright colors, very tasteful art & excellent furniture. The kitchen is just amazing! Although on the small size, the appliances are top of the line. The surprising thing is that everything imaginable a good chef might need is behind the cabinet doors in multiple numbers and there is enough silverware and dishes to accommodate at least 12. The beds are comfortable although the bunkbeds are a challenge to make. The washer and dryer are Bosh and practically new. You will not want for a single thing.
Secondly, the location is arguably the very best on the Island. At the foot of Holmes Harbor the water is protected and generally like a mirror in the mornings. The Harbor Seals come by to say hello every morning, the same Great Blue Heron visits every day to fish for breakfast in the shallow water and birds of all kinds provide great watching. A doe and two fawns were in our yard almost every morning. A half mile away at the foot of the bay is Nichols Brothers Shipbuilding is just amazing to watch. We witnessed several launchings and retrievals across the beach. On 9/10 they will launch a 100 passenger cruise ship for National Geographic. There are four good restaurants, the Charmer’s Bistro crab benedict is to die for, Freeland Café does a nice breakfast and the China Kitchen is surprisingly good. Gordon’s, only 3 minutes away is excellent.
The South end of the Island is the most beautiful and interesting part of Whidbey. Many artists, frequent entertainment, and a number of wineries. We particularly liked the Spoiled Dog. The town of Freeland is less than 5 minutes away and has all the facilities you need. We made frequent use of the very nice athletic club only 4 minutes away.
Saving the best for last, I must comment on the beach at the house as this was the best clam digging beach we have ever been on in out lives. In 5 minutes you can have enough clams for a big batch of Chowder and Clams Casino.
All in all, our stay was nothing short of a 5 star experience.
My husband and I took our two dogs here for a short weekend and loved our stay. The view of the water, the location and access to the beach really made the trip. The house is very well maintained, clean, and had everything needed to prepare meals, including a charcoal BBQ. We hope to stay here again. Thank you, Kara!
It was a great spot. Access to the private beach when the tide is out was great! Comfortable house with everything you might need. Thanks for the fun stay!
Loved it, perfect little getaway for our family
Cute little cottage with everything you would need for a relaxing weekend getaway. Loved the beach out front, my girls had so much fun catching and releasing tiny crabs, and also harvesting fresh mussels for dinner. Would have given it 5 stars but the kitchen was a little small and dated since I like to cook but overall will definitely be back for more. Thanks Kara for being super responsive to all my questions and being so helpful.
Great spot. Clean and comfortable
We needed to extend our stay at the last minute. The owner was very accommodating. We would definitely rent this spot again on our next visit.
Perfect for our family
We stayed a long weekend for a wedding on Whidbey. Couldn't be happier with our stay and communication with Rachel prior to arrival. Cozy accommodations while plenty of room for our family of 4. Full of Hygge!
