Charming, cheerful, and private two bedroom cottage sits right on Holmes Harbor. The master bedroom has a king size bed; the kid's bunkroom sleeps four. Enjoy your morning coffee on the east facing deck with spectacular views of the harbor, and spend your evenings around the fire pit roasting hot dogs and marshmallows. The large front yard is surrounded by a photinia hedge, making the property very private. There is also an orchard with eight fruit trees. Cooks will delight in the well equipped kitchen. Enjoy the bounty of the sea with plentiful mussels and clams off the beach. There are so many simple wonders to keep you entertained on the property that it's sometimes hard to get out to discover the rest of the island!

About Kara Bruns
We are the third generation of my family to have a home on Holmes Harbor. My parents purchased and still own the cabin just to the north of ours when I was a toddler. Three decades later my husband and I had the opportunity to buy our house. Back in the 1940's our property served as a herring farm. We live in Seattle and try to make it up to Whidbey whenever possible. As our kids are getting older, there are often activities that keep us from making the trip to the island. Whidbey is a beloved place to our family and friends; we are happy to share it's peace and beauty with you.
Kara Bruns purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Kara Bruns chose Freeland
Our house is just a ten minute drive from the ferry terminal in Clinton. A large grocery store is only 1.5 miles away in the town center of Freeland. The charming seaside town of Langley, with its many art galleries, boutiques, and specialty stores, is just ten miles to the east. Despite the proximity to many of Whidbey's many attractions, it's easy to simply spend all day perfectly entertained by the peaceful environs of our property. Our home is located on a quiet residential road and surrounded by large photinia hedge, making it very private. There is an orchard with eight fruit trees on the northwest corner of the property. We frequently have visits from eagles, deer, sea otters, and harbor seals. When the tide goes out, mussels can be easily pulled off the pilings of the pier. There are also copious clams and Dungeness crab in the harbor (with the proper permits of course!). Turn over a beach rock to find dozens of little crab scampering about. There is so much natural wonder all around.
What makes this Cottage unique
Our home sits very close to the water, so you will enjoy a very proximate view of the harbor. We are fortunate to have a pier, not to mention a large and private yard on the front side of the house. You will enjoy the new deck we had rebuilt in January 2015. Our latest addition to the property is a fire pit- perfect for summer grilling and s'mores, of course. While some of the beaches at Whidbey can fill up with many people, you will enjoy our beach all to yourselves. If you have a paddle board, kayak, or inflatable boat, bring it up to explore the harbor. There is also a boat launch at Freehand park, just a half mile away. It's a place that offers quintessential summertime fun.

Loved it, perfect little getaway for our family
Cute little cottage with everything you would need for a relaxing weekend getaway. Loved the beach out front, my girls had so much fun catching and releasing tiny crabs, and also harvesting fresh mussels for dinner. Would have given it 5 stars but the kitchen was a little small and dated since I like to cook but overall will definitely be back for more. Thanks Kara for being super responsive to all my questions and being so helpful.
Great spot. Clean and comfortable
We needed to extend our stay at the last minute. The owner was very accommodating. We would definitely rent this spot again on our next visit.
Perfect for our family
We stayed a long weekend for a wedding on Whidbey. Couldn't be happier with our stay and communication with Rachel prior to arrival. Cozy accommodations while plenty of room for our family of 4. Full of Hygge!
What a wonderful spot to spend the week! We didn't want to leave!
An unusually warm weather week made for great swimming and beach time with many meals on the deck. Such a fantastic spot! We definitely hope to be back.
Very Nice Place, 4.5 stars
We booked a Sunday to Sunday stay, which is 3 days longer than we usually take. I booked the full week because the week long discount offer made the costs similar. It worked out very well. The full week left us all relaxed and satisfied. Clamming out in front of the house was the best I have experienced in my 4 plus decades of digging. Very easy! We brought a boat and motor for setting crab pots. Crabbing within sight of the cottage was acceptable, with 3 to 5 keepers per pot (minimum of 4 hour soak). We set pots about a half mile north of the cottage and left them to soak overnight. After an almost 24 hour soak, we ran up to check the pots and the first one we checked was completely empty. Bait only, not a strand of kelp or eelgrass. We had obviously been robbed, so I didn't drop the pot back there, but I was happy the thieves were thoughtful enough to have left the pot for us. We ran over to our other pot and got 7 keepers, then ran back to the cottage to re-set them within sight. After hearing stories about crab pot thefts in Holmes Harbor for years, this was my first experience with this. We used to set pots near Beverly Beach and would get 20 or more keepers per pot, so our high pull of 7 was plenty to feed the 4 of us, but nowhere near what we have seen in years past. This would not keep me from staying here again as crabbing is good enough, but not great.
The house is very nice and the air conditioning and dock are a huge plus. The yard is enormous and there are fruit trees, but nothing was ripe in mid July. Wifi, bbq, and fire pit are provided and fully adequate for us and the location is very good. I have avoided booking places within sight of the boat builder, but this house is far enough away that the noise they produce is essentially white noise. Our dog did not enjoy the feeling of sand, rocks, and shells on his feet, so no steps to the beach were not a problem. If you need steps, the houses on either side have access for you to use. There is easy access to Freeland, Langley, Greenbank, Coupeville, etc. It is close to Seattle, but feels far away and our experience with Kara was easily the best of the many places we have rented in South Whidbey and I expect we'll be back next summer. Maybe in August when salmon fishing is likely to be open. If you bring crab pots, bring a depth finder. I saw depths up to 120 feet and set pots between 60 and 70. Minus 1/2 star for the crabbing, but everything else was great.
Extremely beautiful and loved all of the wildlife, cranes otters, eagles, fabulous
There were 6 women and plenty of room for all. The kitchen has basic utensil that made things so much easier. Just a lovely place. We are already talking about next year.
