Experience Merida on the mystical Yucatan Peninsula from the privacy of an historic home in the Centro. Just behind the massive wooden entry doors is a place of peace and simple luxury.
This privately owned townhouse is offered as a vacation rental to those seeking privacy, unstructured days and independent adventures in travel. This is not your typical Bed and Breakfast or hotel experience but offers guests an opportunity to immerse themselves into the local culture, color and richness of this undiscovered colonial Mexican city.
Casa Pocito is a restored colonial rowhouse with 18’ high ceilings, thick stone walls and cool tile floors. A Moroccan-inspired pool is the centerpiece of the rear patio. The middle courtyard allows light and air to filter into the interior spaces. Well-known local architect Salvador Reyes Rios originally restored this property in 2000. The current owners and Wisecracker, their design company recetly reinvented all of the interior and exterior spaces while respecting the original colonial charm. Systems were upgraded, exterior hardscapes were rethought to improve flow and be more functional. The lines between indoor and outdoors are blurred and become transparent thanks to the openness of the architecture.
They have coined the new name Casa Pocito Redux to define the totally re-imagined design. Many of the furnishings are custom and were designed especially for the house. Artwork, unique textile accents and accessories have been gathered from their travels around the globe. Chunky rustic antique pieces were discovered locally. Modern elements add another unexpected layer. The rooms painted in traditional mineral-based paints are of a palette inspired by nature; lush flora, stone and water. The sum of these elements is a soothing, uncluttered comfortable place that you may find difficult to leave.
Casa Pocito Redux includes plenty of room for entertaining or relaxing in the formal sala, a comedor that seats 8, a center courtyard with a sleek architectural infinity fountain and a sparkling new kitchen. The cocina has polished concrete counters, typical handmade pasta tile, modern stainless steel appliances and an antique armoire for additional storage. It is equipped with everything you’ll need to prepare meals at home if you wish.
There are two air-conditioned bedrooms, including one with an impressive painted 4 poster bed with antique gilt flourishes. The master bedroom overlooks the pool with its wrought iron canopy bed made by a local craftsman. Two modern bathrooms with step-in showers retain their original character with antique tiles. The bedrooms each contain one queen sized bed and have bathrooms adjacent to them. The bedroom suites are located at opposite ends of the house which provides great privacy when two couples are traveling together.
Antique stone walls surround the peaceful rear garden which blooms with bougainvillea, heliconia, palms and flowering banana trees. The centerpiece of this garden is a Moroccan style plunge pool lined with glass mosaic tiles and framed with native stone. The place to refresh, revive and relax.
Casa Pocito, like Merida itself, is a special small secret.
I visited the Yucatan in the late 1970s when I was still in college. The people, the pace and the beauty of Merida left a lasting impression. Although there have been many changes and growth especially in the north of the city since then, the place retains all of it's original charm. My partner and I purchased Casa Pocito in 2004 and use it as a getaway, when we are not in residence we receive guests. We redesigned the interiors and patio spaces and added the Moroccan plunge pool to enhance the property in 2010. We are the principals of an interior design business based in California but also have worked on several projects in Merida. The house has been featured in three books on interior design and was featured in Ambientes magazine. Casa Pocito is a wonderful jewel and we feel fortunate to be the current custodians of this antique property.
The Owner purchased this townhome in 2004
Living in a piece of colonial history, enjoying the unique architectural features, and savoring the peace and quiet that lie behind the massive entry doors. Merida's Historico Centro is a busy, busy place with lots of bus traffic (and noise). Casa Pocito enjoys an enviable location on a short street with no bus traffic. We encourage you to always ask about street traffic and noise when you are making your inquiries at the various properties in and around the center of Merida.
Two adults and our daughter throughly enjoyed a week at Casa Pocito. Pamela the manager we dealt with while in Merida was professional and a pleasure to work with as was Jim the owner stateside, both offered tips and info that helped us enjoy a smooth week in a city we had never visited previously.
The property itself was clearly designed for more than just a vacation rental and has design touches and art that surpasses many of the rental only type accommodation we have seen in the past. This place reads like a great place a friend has let you use and as such is instantly comfortable and relaxing. The location is excellent and on a quiet street considering Merida's traffic which is a huge plus, yet an easy walk to any of the Centro you wish to explore. The pool is quite cold this time of year but that didn't deter our daughter from using it several times as much as it did us. Great bar next door for adults with live music and a great lively social scene each night, they stop the music by 10pm so it never disturbs you, on the contrary siting in the courtyard listening to it makes for a nice after dinner cocktail time.
Highly recommended both for the quality of accommodation ease of booking and professional management.
My partner and I stayed at Casa Pocito for 5 days at the end of June. From the moment we opened the doors, we knew we made the right choice. The Casa is very well appointed with interesting furnishings in a relaxing and warm setting. The plunge pool is a great way to cool down after spending the day exploring the City.
The Casa is in a great location. It is a short walk to the Town Centre and other places of interest. Le Negrita is right next store and worth a visit. Pamela arranged for a chef to cook for us one evening. She is a great help if you need advice.
Thanks for sharing your Casa, we definitely will return.
We just returned from a dreamy month at Casa Pocito. We just loved it. It is even prettier than the pictures. An ideal location to explore the old historic part of the town and walkable to everything. Superb restaurants are all over the city. The best bar in Merida, La Negrita is located a few door down and we got lovely enjoyable live spanish music in our poolside courtyard for free 3 days a week that promptly shuts down each night well before bedtime. We loved Merida. The longer you are there, the more you realize this is one special city. Casa Pocito is the perfect place to enjoy everything about the city and when you walk back inside the doors each night you feel truly pampered with an outdoor garden and lovely lit pool that is so peaceful ,complete with a zen water fountain. Even in the heat of the day the house remains cool and offers both sun and shade in the backyard. This truly is an ideal setup for 2 couples with two separate washrooms, and bedrooms at opposite ends of the house offering loads of privacy. It feels like you are living in a magazine! Superb furniture and art,and decorated very tastefully. Loved it!!!!!! This one is a 12 out of 10.
An amazing property in a great location. Rarely does one find a kitchen you can actually cook in, but this had everything. The hosts thought of everything from creature comforts to helpful hints about the city and neighborhood. Merida is a lively city and Casa Pocito was the perfect, tranquil retreat from visiting Mayan ruins, Ceotes and monstrous grocery stores (Who knew?). Certainly will repeat the visit!
Rather than repeat everything that the other reviewers have said I will say I can't agree more with them!! It is very comfortable place and you instantly feel at home (and sometimes don't want to leave it's that fabulous!!) Jim is great to work with as well as their property manager. Negritas next door sometimes takes over the parking but there was always a spot right around the corner from the house so it was never a problem. I would highly recommend this place to anyone and hoping to stay there again in the near future!! The stay at Casa Pocito was the highlight of our trip!
An unpretentious facade opens into the most beautiful house. Every bit as lovely as the photos, the kitchen is a cooks delight, the bedrooms lovely with comfortable beds and great sheets. I cannot recommend it highly enough. Merida is wonderful as are the people and restaurants. We had no trouble parking in front, so we could drive to wonderful Hacienda Yaxcopoil and to the spectacular ruin Uxmal.
Mayan ruins, colonial towns, cenotes, beaches and wildlife preserves are all easy daytrips from Merida.
