A real slice of Hawaii

  • 5 of 5

We were looking for a property away from the major cities but close to the ocean. This place was perfect. The property is walking minutes away from the ocean. The lava heated swimming pool is fantastic. We started every day in it. We enjoyed the property so much that we felt cheated out of the relaxing time we spent there when on the road visiting Volcano National Park and other day trips to see other sites on the Hilo side of the island. Peg has everything you need there. We enjoyed lounging around the pool. The hammock was used several day as well. Bicycles gave two in our party a chance to explore the area without a vehicle. The grill provided great meals, and the screened in porch in the back provided an outdoor living room that we used many nights for relaxation or family game time. The area is quiet, except for the frogs and birds, which we found enhanced our experience with the nature in the area. Peg has a great booklet that will assist you in enjoying the area to the fullest. If you enjoy snorkeling, as we did, this place is perfect. A five minute walk to a trail accessible through a private driveway leads to a series of deep pools protected from the main effects of the ocean waves closest to the shoreline. Proceed another five minutes from this area by following the road until you come to the tide pools. Here you walk out onto the lava until you find the area you would like to snorkel. You will have more current here when the tide is raising or lowering, but the water clarity in both spots no matter the wave or current condition is clear. There is no sand to stir up. The amount of people here is very few compared to other beach like snorkeling spots. The variety of ocean life seen here is amazing. Water shoes are must if you are snorkeling in this area, or even swimming in the pool because of the lava rock. We spent six nights here and wish it could have been much longer. If I ever return to the big island I would definitely want to stay here again. But I would want a longer stay, just so we could enjoy more time at Peg's

fantastic house in Kapoho. As a side note, Peg was very timely and professional in her communications both during and after the booking. And her property manager lives right across the street if you have any questions or concerns. Mahalo Peg for providing us the opportunity to enjoy your beautiful property.

Just Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

This is such a cute home, and it is really close to the Kapoho Tide Pools. It is a very easy little walk, even with snorkel gear. Everything we could have wanted was at the house; at the end of the day, it was lovely to come back to our own tide pool in the backyard. It was warmer than the cool pools, and it was perfect for soaking. The house is centrally located; Pahoa had all the food we could ask for, and it's a short jaunt to Volcanoes National Park. We loved our stay!

LOVE this place!

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful place to relax, connect with nature and each other. This property has a pond very comfortable for swimming and the tidepools with colorful fish just a few minutes walk away. Lots of snorkels, masks, and floaties to use. There is a large screened back patio but we spent most of our down time sitting on the deck chairs overlooking the pond. House has a full kitchen with everything needed to prepare and eat meals, full bathroom, and a large outdoor shower. I hope I get the opportunity to return and spend time in this place again.

This is the best Hawaiian vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

We totally loved this vacation home. The house was very clean and had all the necessities, plus more. We enjoyed the screened lanai in the evenings, and the Kilauea heated pool is our kind of relaxation. We enjoyed watching the doves building a nest in the coconut palm tree near the pool. After 2 lovely weeks we were sad to leave, but we'd like to return. Soon!

Amazing Property!

  • 5 of 5

This home is truly awesome. We had three adults stay for 3 nights and we were more than comfortable, and able to entertain 3 more guests for dinner! The Geo-thermally heated pool in the backyard was the spotlight of this property, it was the perfect way to start each day. The neighborhood is quaint, quiet and very close to the beautiful tide pools! The house was so well stocked, we really didn't lack for anything (i.e. snorkels, towels, floaties, condiments, etc). Peg, you are a wonderful host! Future guests, be sure to do your grocery shopping prior to heading to the house, as grocery stores are a bit of a ways away. Having the washer and dryer helped us out a lot as well. We enjoyed the screened in patio as well as the backyard BBQ, worked great for our "family-style" meal. I have already recommended this house to a few of my friends, and I will most likely request to stay again at some point. Thank you for the amazing experience, Aloha!

Perfect getaway off the beaten path

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four with two kids (5 years and 10 months) stayed for 8 days at Peg's Punana Kiowai. Initially the humid heather and lack of AC was a bit much for some of us, but Peg does her best to provide ceiling fans throughout plus additional fans. We cooled off daily in the beautiful pool and very quickly acclimated to the weather. We have stayed in many VRBO rental properties over the years and hands down, Peg has done an OUTSTANDING job of stocking her home. The lanai was perfectly setup for relaxation and allowing my little people to spread out. To name of FEW of the personal touches: scented candles, bug spray, first aid kit, bins of snorkel gear and water shoes in a variety of sizes, movies, bikes, beach chairs, laundry soap, pool floaties, and a well stocked spice cabinet... plus so much more! We spent so much time connecting as a family indoors and outdoors--between BBQing, swimming, snorkeling in the tide pools just steps away, collecting coconuts and drinking fresh coconut milk, to falling asleep in the hammock looking at the stars. The home is wonderfully maintained and very clean. We have every intention of coming back in the future!

About Peg McAllister

We purchased this beautifully located cottage in 2005, near the Wai O'pae Tidepools. We love the serenity, the endless options of things to do, the sound of the ocean, the tropical fragrant flowers, coconuts, papaya and aloe growing on the property. Each day brings a beautiful sunrise over the tidepools, snorkeling among colorful fish and coral, a place to relax and to enjoy family and friends.

Why Peg McAllister chose Kapoho

Our Hawaiian cottage features a unique natural lava heated swimming pool, tropical plants, palms, even a Black crowned Heron comes to fish on occasion. An outdoor lava BBQ, wrap around porch and fully screened in lanai. Privacy on all sides of this property, offering lush vegetation and ocean sounds.

What makes this cottage unique

The view from the wrap around porch offers changing views of the natural lava heated pool as the tide changes twice each day. I fell in love with the property because of the pool, I jumped in during my first visit with the realtor! I was sold that this is where I want to spend my vacations. Many of our guests come back year after year, too!

Guestbook comments from the owner
