About Donna Bowles

Danny grew up in Oahu and had a family cabin right on Pipeline, so of course he grew up surfing. As a young adult, his work brought him to the Big Island where he manages a private water system. I moved to the Big Island in 2002 from Olympia, WA. I flew for the airlines for many years and was fortunate enough to discover that Hawaii is one of the most beautiful, peaceful places in the world. My love for flying brought me to work at Mokulele Flight Service, where I originally met Danny. He was taking flying lessons. For two years he thought that I had a partner until he saw me on an online dating site. He contacted me and we’ve been together ever since and are now engaged. We bought a 206 Cessna and have enjoyed flying to the other islands. We enjoy fishing and boating to the other islands when the channel cooperates. We have recently taken up golf and have enjoyed the golf courses on the Big Island and Kauai. Between us we have six children and I have three beautiful grandchildren. We also have a border collie terrier mix and a red healer, both pound puppies.

Donna Bowles purchased this hotel in 2015

Why Donna Bowles chose Līhuʻe

This beautiful resort is centrally located on the Northeast side of the island, 10 minutes from the airport in Lihue. Wailua and Kapaa are 10 minutes North of us. Here you can enjoy river paddling tours, snorkel tours, waterfalls, dining, shopping, hiking, golfing and many more activities. On the North side of the island is Hanalei Bay, where they filmed The South Pacific. Here we enjoyed paddling the river, which flows into the ocean, taking in all of the wild life along the way. This is also where we discovered the Kalypso Island Bar & Grill. The lounge at Princeville Hotel is a breathtaking stop to enjoy a beverage overlooking all of Hanalei Bay. Just 10 minutes south of our place is Kalapaki Joe's Sport’s Bar & Grill and Gingbua Tai restaurant at the Harbor Mall. One of our regular stops for lunch is Keoki's Paradise Grill, in the Poipu Shopping Center. It offers a nice open air experience. I also recommend going early in the morning to Waimea Canyon before the clouds roll in and view the island of Ni’ihau. On our last trip we toured the Koloa Rum Store located at the historic Kilohana Plantation, one mile South of Lihue, between 22 North Restaurant and the Kaua’i Plantation Railway. They have samples of their rum made on Kauai. It was a fun experience. If you are a golfer, Wailua Municipal Golf Course is next door (reasonable, but always packed). The Kauai Lagoon Golf Course at the Marriott is 5 minutes away and is one of our favorites. The Puakea Golf Course is 10 minutes away, another favorite. The Kiahuna Golf Course is 20 minutes away in Poipu as well as the Poipu Golf Course (which is very nice, but more expensive). The Princeville Makai and Prince Course at Princeville, are two of the most spectacular golf courses in all of the world and just 40 minutes north and there are more. There are over 40 white sand beaches to explore on this garden isle. We highly recommend the Holo Holo Catamaran trip to Niiha

What makes this hotel unique

We were extremely pleased from the moment we saw the view from our room on the top floor. We overlook all of the pools, waterfalls, ocean and mountains. They are great rooms for people watching too. Danny appreciated the fact that our room is just an elevator ride around the corner from the lobby and the icemaker is just down the hall. There is also a lounge, on our floor only, with a microwave. We really enjoy being pampered with the beauty of the resort and the great service. If we just want a retreat, they will pick us up at the airport and even shuttle us to a shopping center and a couple of golf courses. The restaurant is outstanding with great food, large portions and good prices. Danny enjoyed a prime rib cooked just the way he likes it. A couple of days later, he had barbecue beef ribs and there was so much. He said he felt like Fred Flintstone. We took the leftovers back to our room and heated them up the next night in the microwave and had an intimate dinner on our private lanai. I enjoy waking up to see a beautiful sunrise right over the ocean. I enjoy lounging by the pool and enjoying the food and beverage service or watching sports around the tiki bar. Danny said that the surf is great for beginners or those getting back into it. I hope to try soon. We have enjoyed long walks on the beach, which is the longest one on the island. The lounge is a great alternative for lighter fares and live entertainment. I found the business center very handy for taking care of faxing, scanning and copying. The convention centers there are great for seminars or company parties. We enjoy the convenience store in the morning for a specialty coffee and a bagel. We also have another beautiful view room, if this one is booked for the time you want.

Perfect Choice!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at this property for 8 nights. I cannot say enough positive things about this property. First off, the resort itself is gorgeous with wonderful and very friendly staff. The restaurants on the property offered great food choices and some of the best happy hours we found on the island.

In regards to the unit itself, we found it to be ideal for a couple. Very comfortable bed (and being 7.5 months pregnant at the time... this was very important), spacious, and what felt like the best possible balcony views possible. We could see both the pool area and the ocean from our unit. We did not spend a lot of time in the room.. but really enjoyed sunrises in the morning with a cup of coffee from our veranda or playing cards at night overlooking all the activities down by the pool.

My only negative is more just a heads up for others considering this unit. While booking through HomeAway, you definitely get the unit cheaper than if you were to book through the resort (you get to avoid resort fees, etc). It was a bit hard navigating exactly what this meant in the beginning. For example, you do get complete access to the pool area and pool towels. However, you do not get to participate in the actual activities offered by the resort (for example, the week we were there they offered lei making classes, a hula lesson by the pool, various educational videos/seminars about Hawaiian culture, etc). You also do not get coffee in the room. While there is a coffee maker in the room, we were only supplied with 1 packet of coffee at the beginning of our stay and they would not give us more at the front desk as were not "paying the resort fee." This did not end up being a big deal as we found a local coffee farm to purchase coffee from and some coffee filters and had better coffee each morning anyway. If you are really set on these types of activities or services, this is something to keep in mind. However, for my husband and I, we were so busy exploring and never at the resort anyway.. it was not a big deal for us at all and did not take away from our perfect experience at this resort and with this unit!

Great resort

Great family friendly resort. The pools, grounds and accommodation were excellent. Location of the resort on the east coast is handy for access to beaches to the north and south of the island. Owner of the property was very responsive with queries.

Vacation in paradise...

  • 5 of 5

Thank you for sharing your home Kauai. I found the accommodations to be quite welcoming. Room was clean, comfortable and well maintained. The view, from the balcony was, in my opinion, spectacular. You can watch all the activity as well as see the waves crashing on the beach. I've stayed in another unit in this resort, but when I go back, it's this one I'll return to. The resort itself is also well maintained. The grounds are beautiful. The restaurants offer great views and delicious food. The staff is professional, courteous and helpful. I would recommend this rental to anyone visiting Kauai. I absolutely loved it!

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

Stayed at Kauai Beach Resort in Property 742355 for 3 nights on our way to Maui. The location is about 10 minutes from the airport in Lihue and centrally located. We had no trouble getting to Princeville or Waimea Canyon from our location. Even though it was cloudy and cooler than normal for Kauai, we sat on the room's lanai and enjoyed the great views of the pools, ocean and even entertainment. Even with the patio door closed, we could hear the surf at night! The resort is beautiful and clean and the room location was easy to get to. Although a bit dated, the nice-sized room was clean and the fridge and coffeemaker are a plus. Just a short walk to the media area to print out boarding passes or pickup items at the little shop. We did not eat at the resort as we were out and about a lot (stopped at the grocery store upon arrival) but the menu looked very inviting. Had pupus and drinks at Shutters which is very nice. We were told about the parking and cleaning fees prior to our stay so we expected them on our credit card bill upon returning home. If we ever go back to Kauai we will definitely stay at property 742355 at Kauai Beach Resort!
