Nestled in Spearfish Canyon with Spearfish Creek running through the front yard, this rustic family cabin is the perfect place to relax, fly fish, hike, sight see or use as a base camp for an exciting family expedition through the Black Hills of South Dakota! Fully appointed, the only thing you'll need to bring are your friends & groceries. Sleep with the windows open on the sun porch (1 hide-a-bed and 1 day bed), or retire to 2 bedrooms that provide plenty of closet space and dressers to store your travel gear.
Originally leased from Homestake Mining Company in 1957, my grandfather expanded the one-room hunting cabin, adding indoor plumbing, kitchen and large enclosed porch over the years. Homestake eventually divested itself from many of its land holdings in the Hills, and my grandfather purchased the cabin and land from the company in the early 90's.
It's been a family haven for over 4 generations of my family, forming impressions and lifelong memories for kids young and old. It's where I learned to fish at 4-years old, tossing a worm-baited pole off the bridge into Spearfish Creek. Eventually I learned how to fly fish on the same creek, and still enjoy flailing the waters on occasion now some 50 years later!
Ask any number of people who've spent time in Spearfish Canyon, and they'll tell you what a magical place it truly is. From hiking the old water trails to snowmobiling or cross country skiing in the winter, there's no place like it on earth. Quiet, serene, natural and full of wildlife - deer, chipmunks, squirrels, raccoons, Bighorn sheep, fox, and hundreds of species of birds - all call the Hills home.
Kevin Costner was so enraptured with the beauty of the Black Hills that he chose to shoot the closing scenes of "Dances With Wolves" just 2.5 miles away from our family cabin. Head north up Highway 14A and turn right at Savoy toward Roughlock Falls. You'll see a sign posted where the final scene of the epic movie was shot, and may recognize the ridge from which Wind In His Hair shouted "Sunkmanitu Tanka Ob Waci," telling Dances With Wolves he will always be his friend.
We hope that you'll choose to enjoy the beauty and solitude of Spearfish Canyon, exploring all the wonderful sights, sounds and experience of The Black Hills of South Dakota, making memories for your family that will be talked about for years.
