About Karen

I'm Karen & worked as a teacher in Louisiana before coming on board as an educational diagnostician (assessing children for special needs). I resigned my LA position June 2012, and as of August 2012, I am now teaching a special needs class in nearby MS. My husband, Donald, is a retired security officer from a LA state inmate facility. He and I have owned rental property for the past 25 years and we renovate our own properties. We renovated a house in MS a couple blocks from the Gulf which Katrina claimed in 2005. We looked on the bright side and bought our first nightly rental in Pigeon Forge 2006: Bear Creek Lodge. We also built back on our lot in Bay St. Louis, MS, and feel blessed to call both states, Louisiana and Mississippi, home. We are blessed to live on LA/MS line where we can go back & forth for the important things: LA: grandchildren and church; MS: beach and school children. The most important things in our lives are God, our children, grandchildren, family and friends.

Karen purchased this house in 2007

Why Karen chose Sevierville

I feel the presence of God daily, but when I take a scenic ride through Smokey Mt. National Park or Cades Cove, I think of how great my God must be that He spoke this existence into place. I've vacationed here for many years and owning a piece of property here was a far-away dream, but God made it a reality in 2006 when we purchased Bear Creek Lodge in Pigeon Forge. God blessed us with guests like you to rent it; however, being an educator, it was always rented during summer and holidays when I could visit. A year later, in 2007, while looking for a piece of property to park our camper, we stumbled upon this awesome place in Wears Valley. After renovations, we not only had a piece of the mountain to park our camper on, but two more additional nightly rentals. He gave us more than one piece of the mountain. We invite you, our family and friends, to visit and enjoy a piece of the treasure with us.

What makes this house unique

In the valley, everything is quiet and peaceful. I am a very busy woman holding down a full-time job teaching students everyday and then coming home daily to keep paper work up-to-date from our rental business, responding to email inquiries, sending quotes, etc. I enjoy being in the valley and just relaxing in the peace and quiet....away from it all.

Karen did an amazing job!

  • 5 of 5

It was like being at home. Not eccentric, not overly priced but comfortable. I will not book thru homeaway again, considering the aggravation I was put thru to make my 2nd payment. I did call customer support, but the help I got was no help and the information they gave me to help me was invalid. Phone numbers they gave me were invalid, from 2 years ago. My 2nd payment had to be made thru the owner, after numerous phone calls which did not make it easier for me. I did not know if I was going to have a vacation rental or not 2 weeks before vacation. Thank God for Karen, who took care of everything and made sure I did have a place to go to for a lovely vacation.

Very clean and comfortable.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed being here. Had fun in Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg. But we also enjoyed our stay at Apple Bear Cottage just as much, enjoyed hanging out there playing pool and using the hot tub, just spending some quality time on the back deck cooking out with family. It really is a quiet, enjoyable place. Karen is a really nice lady to deal with when booking your stay. Very helpful and wants to issue you have a pleasant experience and stay.

Loved this house was close to everything but still far enough away to enjoy the Peace and quiet. Beautiful home inside and out, the hot tub was great to relax in at the end of a long day seeing sights. Will definitely see if this house is available for the next vacation. I will even plan my vacation around availability of this house.

Nice But Doesn't Meet Expectations

  • 4 of 5

The pictures of the house interior is very accurate. The large master bath is the best portion of the house. The kitchen is decently equipped, just make sure to bring the basics (dish washer soap, sugar, oil, coffee...exc...). Both front and back porches are very spacious but nothing is private from the view of the road immediately in front of the house (not pictured) AND the back yard. You practically share the yard with the two bedroom unit that Karen rents and it sits on the same property, 20 feet apart (also not pictured) with direct views from their back porch into the hot tub room (no window treatments for privacy). Some of the blinds are falling apart in one of the master bedrooms but it is easy to hang something for privacy.

As some of the other reviews say, it is an older home with poor lighting but it is very spacious and stays cool during the hot weather, nice for a family getaway and suitable in comparison to the price. We did enjoy our stay and made the most of it, just be aware of the close quarters outside!

Karen is a very respectable host and answers most all questions via text or call when we addressed some of the issues above. However, when we asked why the water dispenser didn't work she said it might have been overlooked due to the winter draining, and did not offer to lend a hand to turn it on. Just make sure to bring or buy filtered water if it is a concern to you! Not a biggie for us. Overall, a decent place to stay and a host you can trust.

Lovely Home

  • 5 of 5

Lovely little home. We had a couple small issues the first night. However, Mrs. Karen took care of them and was very easy to contact. The remainder of our stay was great. Loved the house and the quiet area. Beautiful view from the back deck. My teens really enjoyed the pool table as well as the dining table being big enough for their board games. Would definitely rent again. We loved our trip to the beautiful Smokey mountains and our stay in this clean comfortable home. Thanks. Mrs. Karen

A real view of mountain life without the bright, city lights. Relaxing on the quiet, back patio, one can hear the chirping crickets and see the flickering of lightening bugs flashing on and off in the air. However, within minutes, one can be strolling down Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge strip gazing through windows as candy and other items are being made to perfection. Only 8 miles to Townsend, one can quickly be on the back of a horse winding around a mountain trail or on a raft meandering through the white water waves. Only a mile or so away on Lyons Springs Road is the scenic cut-off route to Cades Cove and while enroute many stop at Metcalf Bottoms to swim or fish in the fresh water stream as burgers are sizzling on the grill. Centrally located, guest at Apple Bear Cottage are in near proximity to everything.
