Charming, comfortable, large second floor apartment with private entrance, one block from beach, walking distance to Rockland's harbor, restaurants, shops, galleries, museums, and Island ferries. The garden is continuously blooming, full of color and sweet scents mingling with ocean breezes to fill the air. Our guests love to sit outside enjoying the almost always cool summer weather. Altho there are room air conditioners there is seldom a need for them. The bedroom is spacious and the bed so comfortable guests frequently ask for the make of the mattress! In keeping with the flavor of the town, the apartment is filled with original works of art, artist created quilts, and many books including a collection of our own Stephen King! The kitchen is very well equipped for cooking, provides spices and other condiments, and quality eating utensils. All the linens are of a quality you would want in your own home. PLEASE READ OUR REVIEWS TO FIND OUT WHAT OUR GUESTS HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THEIR STAY AT ARBOR HOUSE! They are more convincing than anything I could write here!
Rockland has the largest lobster fleet on the east coast as well as the largest schooner fleet, and has the charm of a working fishing town as well as a thriving artist community. Also the famous Farnsworth Museum having the largest collection of works by both Andrew and Jamie Wyeth is located within a five minute walk. There is a small beach nearby as well as a new YMCA facility.
The nearby towns of Rockport and Camden offer great shopping as well as magnificent waterfront scenery.
Kayaks and bikes are available to guests. The boats are easily launched at the nearby beach and offer a rare opportunity to inspect the wonderful Rockland Harbor close-up.
Just a few previous guests comments:
'what a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful place! Inside & out. And upside-down, lying on rocks getting splashed by the ocean--FUN!
This place is home and it's just what I needed'
'Great house and town. We will return'
' you both have a little slice of heaven here'
' Once again, we had a wonderful time exploring the treasures that Maine has to offer. We would like to thank you for letting us into your home and making us feel welcome. Thanks for letting us use your Kayaks as well. That day was especially fun.
The blues festival was great, we hope to see you again next year'
I have lived in this beautiful 1850’s home renovated by my late husband Gary, for the last 17 years. I am semi-retired, an avid gardener, voracious reader, and occasional writer. I love welcoming the many guests who come from far and wide to stay here! Many return again and again and some decide to move permanently to this interesting and vital community!. The town of Rockland has matured from strictly a fishing town to one that emphasizes the arts and culinary delights. I love living here and I know you will love it too!
Ann Jennings purchased this apartment in 1998
This location is perfect with equal north and south coastal access making it a great base to travel to other areas of Maine. It is also a short block to a beach and harbor boardwalk, and walking distance to Rockland's many unique shops, restaurants, galleries, and state of-the-art movie and live entertainment theater. Every season is exquisitely beautiful - the delight of photographers and artists. When I first moved here I knew I would never want to leave.
This property when first seen by us was a disaster. But my friend, partner and husband Gary, being a house renovator and yacht carpenter, could see the wonderful possibilities. After 2 years of day in and day out work he transformed the old house into a jewel by the harbor. No prettier spot in the world.
We just spent a wonderful week at Arbor House and wish it had been two! My husband and I travel to Maine several times a year and normally rent out of town. As we are hoping to retire to the Rockland area from New York in the next few years we needed to test out the town. Well, we had a great experience. The fully equipped kitchen has everything you could need. My husband is a cook and was wanting for nothing. I am an early riser and was thrilled to watch the sunrise over the harbor each morning from our second story deck. The art work on the walls, the books, the gardens, the proximity to downtown all combined to make this our new place to rent from now on. Top it off with a kind and gracious hostess, Ann, and it has it all!
This was one of the best places we have ever stayed at. The apartment is beautiful and so convenient to everything in town. Ann is the best. She is so easy to work with and was there for anything we needed. I would recommend this rental to anyone. Thank you Ann for a great place to spend our Maine vacation.
My husband and I are regular users of VRBO and Homeaway. We just returned from our first stay in this lovely upstairs apartment. It is very much like the photos only much larger. We were quite surprised at the space and its charm. Ann has stocked this apartment with everything you need to be comfortable as well as a great selection of art and books! THe king size bed is very comfortable and the "treehouse-like " deck provides a cool breeze and an ocean view. There is not a full shower, just a tub with a detachable shower hose. if you can make that work, you can certainly enjoy this property! Also, enjoyed the kayaks that were available, an easy launch from the beach that is a block away!
My husband and I stayed at the Arbor House upstairs apartment in Rockland, MA from 6/18 thru 6/25. The yard is absolutely beautiful, the owner is meticulous about upkeep. The neighborhood is quiet and close to the waterfront. From the balcony upstairs you can see the beautiful Harbor with all the boats. The apartment is very clean and quaint. There is original art work all around. The apartment consists of a large bedroom with walkin closet in front of house with very comfortable king bed. We slept like a couple of babies all week. Then a Livingroom/Diningroom combo with hideabed/couch swivel rocker, tv and table and chairs for dining. Shelves with lots of books and games line one wall. Kitchen is next and the owner has made sure to supply most everything you could need. Lots of different cookware, spices and oil etc. off the clean tidy kitchen is the very nice balcony. We used that a lot. You can even eat out there, it includes a gas grill. Bathroom is at the other end. Lots of very plush towels and special soaps from a speciality shop down the street. The location is perfect for walking to shops and resturants all over town. We especially loved walking along the harbor. There are also three kyacks available for use. The owner is usually available for any questions. This was our first experience with VRBO, this owner was ver helpful and easy to work with. Had good feelings throughout our experience.
I stayed at this wonderful house while attending a conference at the Samoset. The Samoset had sold out of rooms and I was so fortunate to have found Arbor House, a homey haven convenient to everything. Just steps away from the harbor walking trail, restaurants, downtown and the YMCA gym facility. The apartment is so nicely appointed, you will find yourself surrounded with art and all kinds of literature. The outside porch and sitting area were well maintained and landscaped with spring flowers newly planted in flower boxes. My favorite aspect was being so close to the ocean I could get some sunrise snapshots down on the harbor during my early morning walks. It was a bonus to have a good internet connection as well for those of us who need to touch base with work. Ann was a wonderful host and checked often to see if I needed anything. I would whole heartedly recommend the Arbor House! It's a real gem!
For three of the last four years, we have spent several weeks at Arbor House in Rockland. And, we hope to spend some time there this coming summer, too.
Why? The area is beautiful, the people are creative and warm, and this special house exudes love, the arts, flowers, literature, and a homey feeling 2,500 miles away from home. You can walk to the Penobscot Bay, to town, to Jess's for fresh fish or to the Strand for great entertainment from music to films.
Highlights in Rockland include 1) walking the Breakwater to the Light, about 8/10 of a mile into the sea; 2)driving the coast of Maine, including Owl's Head Peninsula; 3) visiting Maine Island Rag Rugs on Rockland; and 4) getting to know the locals.
We can cook our own food "at home" at Arbor House or walk to the wonderful restaurants nearby, including Cafe Miranda, Brass Compass Cafe, Rock City Cafe and Rock Harbor Pub. A short drive might find us at Waterman's Lobster, the Happy Clam or Blackboard Deli. And, regardless of the weather, we walk to the water to see the sunset or just to hear the water and feel the ocean. Arbor House is special. We'd move in if it weren't for those frigid Maine winters!
