About Jim and Penny Darr
My husband and I love to travel and entertain. The house was designed with to accommodate our friends and growing family. As the family grows or gets older we get new toys for the lake. We have 2 children, 4 grandchildren- it's all about "Them" Tate, Henry, ELLIOT, Mia. We love our 4 legged friends! Our pride and joy is our 12 year old Yorkie, Lily.
Jim and Penny Darr purchased this House in 1979
Why Jim and Penny Darr chose Big Lake
My husband grew up in Mt. Vernon - the lake house is our summer home. We own a business in Seattle where we spend most of our time. We love the lake just as much in the winter as we do in the summer. Nothing is better than sitting in the hot tub when it's raining watching the ducks, eagles and occasional deer roam the property.
What makes this House unique
Rambler with great views from almost every room. Easy to get around for elderly people. Ask about wheel chair accessible - Large fenced yard easy access to the lake and to keep pets in without worrying about them. The art in the house is from our travels. New for 2018 - Luxury vynal floors throughout the entire house make it easy to clean and air conditioning for those warm summer days.

Amazing house & property. Great family vacation!
We had such a great family vacation at this house on Big Lake. The house is so beautiful and there is so much to do there. We had fun on the paddle boards and kayaks. We brought our boat and went skiing and inner tubing, the water was great and hardly any other boats during the week. Our golden retriever had a great time swimming everyday. We played yard Yahtzee, ate out on the nice deck everyday, went hot tubing, made s'mores by the bon fire, played games at night, saw an amazing view of the moon going down behind the trees through the big telescope in the living room. The house had everything you could think of and more. We've stayed at a lot of different lake houses through the years and this one is by far our favorite. Thank you so much Jim and Penny for sharing your beautiful house!! We've made great memories there. We will surely be back.
Beautiful home and property just a quick trip from Seattle!
We stayed at Jim and Penny's home over Thanksgiving weekend, and boy oh boy was there A LOT to be thankful for! The kitchen was modern, well-stocked, and large enough to accommodate many of us preparing our feast. The double oven was a huge bonus. The living room was a cozy place to curl up after the meal in front of the fire, while kids played games in the other room. The next day the weather was nice enough to take a day trip to Chuckanut Drive and enjoy the gorgeous views. We even braved the cool evening to enjoy a sunset happy hour by the fire pit at the lake. Thank you for sharing this great property! I bet it's even better in the summer, but we couldn't have been happier in November.
Great stay, fun property
We had a great stay at the Big Lake property. I was originally concerned about there not being enough room for seven adults but it was not a problem. I'd definitely would stay there again. The kitchen is large and well stocked. There are plenty of linens and towels and new full size washer and dryer. Thank you.
Thank-you! Your family was great! I would highly recommend renting to you or your family.
Relaxing, inviting, tranquil
The house was well equipped and had everything we needed to be comfortable. We loved all the extras that were available to us, but the weather didn't quite work out, so we didn't take advantage this time around, but we will next time for sure! The fire pit overlooking the water was so great for chatting while enjoying the bits of sunshine that did decide to show up! The hot tub was also wonderful to enjoy as well!
We never left the house once during our stay because we had all the comforts of home and were able to cook comfortably.
Thank you for letting us enjoy your wonderful home! Highly recommend!
Great Family Vacation Spot
We had a great time on our recent trip to Big Lake. We picked this rental property because it allowed pets, and we got a new puppy this summer but still wanted to be able to take a vacation. We went with my sister's family, so there were 8 of us all together. Overall it was a wonderful experience, and I would definitely recommend this rental property to others. We stayed for 3 nights.
- The outdoor area was awesome - very easy access to the lake, and comfortable seating for everyone.
- The gas firepit was lots of fun (though we were bummed there was a burn ban so we couldn't use the wood firepit).
- All of us loved having use of the 2 paddle boards and kayaks.
- Three of the rooms have cement floors which was great for the puppy, and those rooms were still central so that people watching the puppy weren't removed from the fun
- The dining table was big, easily fit all of us, had a great view, and was perfect for playing games! There was also a nice big table outside for eating and playing games as well.
- We didn't cook much, but we were able to find everything we did need in the kitchen - and especially enjoyed having a keurig coffee machine to use
- Easy access to the Big Lake Grocery Store was really great.
- The owner was very nice and incredibly accommodating and helpful.
- Although we managed to sleep 8 of us (6 adults and 2 kids) it was tight, and we needed to bring multiple air mattresses. The fold out couch wasn't an option for us since it was in the main room and the little kids went to bed too early for that and the older single adults (my sister's kids) sleep way too late in the mornings.
- There was no door to the bathroom off the master bedroom, which caused a problem for us since we had the cousins all sharing that room and sleeping on the floor in there. Luckily there is a toilet in the laundry room!
- There is no air conditioning (though the owner has set up fans). It was somewhat grey and chilly while we were there (gotta love the Pacific Northwest!) so this wasn't a huge issue for us. But on the one day that it got warmer outside, it definitely got pretty warm inside.
We were more than pleased with our stay at his house. It was exactly as advertised with great amenities. The paddle boards and kayaks provided an excellent way to enjoy the lake during the day, and the house was perfect for entertaining guests. We were able to travel with our toddler much easier knowing the house had a crib, a highchair, and a great variety of toys. I would highly recommend this location to anyone traveling with younger children looking for a place to spend time together as a family away from the typical tourist traps.
Langs Pony Farm, 3 Golf Courses Nearby. Live entertainment every Friday and Saturday at Big Lake Bar and Grill. Walking distance to the grocery store to get a latte, ice cream, or your favorite spirits.
