Private Garden Villa Above the Rice Terraces in Bali

Bedrooms 1
Half Baths1
Property type villa
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

Villa, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1.5+ Baths, (Sleeps 2-4)

Amanda Villa is on the edge of Ubud, an elegant home in the old style set on top of a ridge that has the cool breeze. The house is on a high point in the Ubud area, and so commands unobstructed views in all directions. Our open windows, balconies and tower loft take advantage of the 360 views on three levels. The tower loft room in fact appears to be the highest point in Ubud: At night you can see Denpasar in the distance and by day you can glimpse islands in one direction, volcanos in the others.

The house is at a junction of the old pedestrian trails, where the old canal path along the ridge intersects with the ancient Penestanan-to-Ubud trail, at the point where the trail turns into stairs and descends thru a high jungle canopy to meet the modern road into Ubud. Across the road is the historic Hotel Tjampuhan with its restaurant newly renovated, a fabulous spa with pools overlooking the sacred river canyon, and views of the hotel’s historic river temple, also newly renovated and expanded. There, you enter the shops and restaurants of Ubud and you are soon at Monkey Forest Road. You can catch a "transport" (taxi) back whenever you like, but walking into Ubud is worth the experience. This is the art side of Ubud, full of galleries, shopping and restaurants.

Behind the villa, the canal path leads in two directions, both past warungs and restaurants and rice fields. Intuit Yoga studios are right behind the villa with their great facility and yoga instructors all day every day. In the other direction, the old path leads past homes, shops, and rice fields into the Balinese artists village of Penestanan. Small coffee shops and restaurants have opened recently in this traditional village with its fabulous temples and culture built around them. At Amanda Villa, you will be taken care of by a Bali family that is very much part of that tradition today. They make it easy to enter a fabulous experience.

The lower floor opens on a balcony and private walled garden with a gate that opens to the footpaths. The garden includes the family temple, where incense is burned and offerings are made every morning. There is a luxurious roofed open air bale for reading, visiting, napping and massage. It is built above a fish pond. Inside is the living and dining area, a small kitchen recently renovated, and the main bath: half inside with the shower half-outdoors in its own private garden. The house has a new hot water system and pump.

The second floor is a single very large bedroom with a 360 view, private balcony, and newly renovated half bath. In one direction is Ubud, barely seen over the rice fields. In another direction is Penestanan with its ancient temples and small family shops. The bedroom balcony looks at Mount Agung, the holy volcano of Bali.

Higher and up the outside stairs, is the tower loft which may be the highest point in Ubud. Recently renovated with new windows and concrete stairs, it is now a great viewing, meditation and yoga area. It feels like the top of the world. On a clear day you can see all the Bali volcanos in the distant NW and NE, and islands to the SE and Lombok. Sunrise is fabulous from the tower with the moon and morning stars, but the stairs on the way up are the best place to view the southern constellations on clear nights!

The ancient Bali irrigation system is everywhere, with small canals in front and behind the house feeding the rice fields. The villa was designed to create and honor a glimpse into the old Bali, the people and culture, with all the comforts of the new world. It was created to be a romantic get-away as well. We have purposely used local crafts people (many of whom have worked on local temples and palaces) and local building materials to retain the traditional customs and style. We do not have AC but fans and shade and breeze like the Balinese. We do not have TV so you can spend your time enjoying the view, the birds, the rain and the people. But we have luxurious furnishings and bathrooms with plenty of hot water and Wi-Fi access throughout the villa and garden! And the views are the best in the Ubud area!

The mornings start early. At the first hints of light, the roosters are crowing and Ibu is already coming back from morning market in Ubud with fresh food for the warung. Paths are being swept, offerings made, and you often see a duck man herding his ducks to glean the rice fields. Children are heading to school and motorcycles buzzing. This is no place for late risers! The family brings incense and offerings to the temple and the best part of the day begins. There are walks and hikes in every direction, best while the morning is cool! Intuit Yoga is steps away and starts at 8; Sedona Spa with incredible massage starts at 10, blocks away; and the Hotel Tjampuhan Spa has pools and more all day from 9 AM. Each under $10 US. The area has options that compete with day trips and exploring Ubud!

The International Airport in Denpasar, the island’s capitol, is a 45 minute drive. You can arrange to be picked up at the airport by our Bali partner Ketut or a member of his family. His car is always a pleasure and his English very good. The drive thru villages and rice fields is well worth the cost (about US $50 one way depending on time of arrival, daytime is always best).

Accommodations: The villa is built for two persons. It is not child proof or toddler safe, with open balconies and stairs. There is one oversized luxurious bedroom upstairs with king bed and 360 degree views and a smaller half bath (sink and toilet) and a window with amazing views! Downstairs, the 8 foot sofa bed can sleep one. Balconies are on both floors. There is also a tower meditation and viewing loft on a 3rd floor. There is a recently renovated kitchen downstairs with gas burners, sink, French press, cooking things and a refrigerator. Large dispenser bottles of fresh drinking water are provided. Wi-Fi is available throughout the villa and gardens, fast enough for email but not streaming and downloads. Laundry service is available for a fee and is easily arranged for you.

Transportation: If you need help with travel plans or shopping, the family is English-speaking and there is always a driver that can be arranged to take you anywhere in an air conditioned car. You have the opportunity to enjoy the privacy and beauty of Bali with the guidance and hospitality of an established Balinese family. Or you may just want to stroll into Ubud and do your own thing! You can spend your days exploring all that Bali and Ubud have to offer but come home to your own Bali style villa where the cool breeze blows. Email or call us in the USA to reserve a piece of paradise.

About Patrick Colvin

My father was in the Pacific in the 1940s and 50s and grew to love the islands especially the Philippines and Bali. He introduced me to the Bali Culture. Later in Sausalito, I coincidentally met one of the sisters of the family I am now partnered with. One thing led to another, and her brother Ketut built this fabulous villa and is now our manager and partner in Penestanan.

Patrick Colvin purchased this villa in 1998

Why Patrick Colvin chose Ubud

Ubud is a real city with great galleries, temples, restaurants, and shops, but it is a bustling city and it is far more peaceful on its Western edge, in the artists village of Penestanan! The villa sits on a ridge overlooking Ubud, on the old footpath connecting Penestanan to the city. It is tranquil and cooler than Ubud with the breeze. Our tower loft appears to be the highest point in Ubud (!) so we've been working on the tower to make its 360 views part of a great experience!

What makes this villa unique

The villa sits above the quiet little Ibu Putu's Warung, one of the first warungs in the area, and still making fresh, traditional Bali cuisine from scratch! You can go downstairs and order off the menu, or have it brought up to your dining room! This is Ketut's family restaurant. Other warungs are blocks away, all good, and Intuit Yoga is fabulous, a few doors down along the charming irrigation canal footpath on which the villa is built. Ubud is blocks away and the Hotel Tjampuhan sits below the villa with its spa, pools, restaurant and famous River Temple of great antiquity and culture.

Perfect honeymoon get away with a view and close to Ubud in a quiet location

  • 5 of 5

We had stayed at Amanda Villa for 6 nights and were amazed with everything. The view from the bed overlooks the jungle with rice fields below. Imagine being able to wake up to the sight of Mount Batur and Agung in the distance. The 3rd floor has a look out perch with a bed in it and a 360 degrees view, we would sit up top looking at the sun setting or just relax in the day with the a.c. on.

The outdoor bathroom is massive. The shower always had warm water and we always wanted to take showers every morning. As there is no pool this is the only option of getting refreshed.

The kitchen is somewhat smaller than most places but being close to restaurants in the penestanen area and Ubud more than make up for it. Try the local restaurants and make sure to go to lalalili and order the gado gado as it's the best I have had so far.

We always felt safe and secure in the house as the safe was working (unlike in some hotels) and the caretakers of the house are all trustworthy.

Anyone considering staying here definitely should do it!

Ubud Palace on the Hill!

  • 5 of 5

I just got back from my stay at Amanda Villa, and can't say enough great things. The place is beautiful. I lovingly called it my personal palace on the hill. It's situated at the top of the steps, just as you cross into Penestanan, the artsy side of town on the West side of Ubud (opposite town across from the Monkey Forest and Yoga Barn), and around a less than 10 minute walk to the center of town. Since this was my first trip to Bali, and first trip traveling alone I was a bit nervous about making the right choice on location. I had done a fair bit of research, but still was unfamiliar with Ubud. Turned out the location was perfect and Patrick, the Villa owner was amazing with recommendations. It really was close to everything I wanted (great Yoga studios - I recommend the Yoga House (amazing place!!), Vegan/Vegetarian restaurants - Clear Cafe and Alchemy, Spas - Sedona Spa is up the road about 10 minutes, and perhaps was my best massage while in Ubud, the Center of Town - Ubud Markets and Ubud Palace etc.), and above Ketut's home, where his family lives, who I was ever grateful for! They all made me feel right at home, which is a great feeling when you are brand new to a place. Wayan, Ketut's mother, is a phenomenal cook, and perhaps the sweetest woman on the planet, as was his sister who was visiting from out of town. As for the villa itself, since it's on top of the hill, the views are ridiculous. I don't think the pictures on the listing do it justice. The meditation room, upstairs from the bedroom, might be one of the highest points in Ubud, making for amazing morning and evenings overlooking Ubud. There is also two bathrooms, which was nice. One traditional with an outdoor shower, and the other upstairs attached to the bedroom that was indoors. The only thing I'd probably give feedback on, is adding additional draw down blinds to the North side of the room. I felt a little exposed without them, but I also felt that way pretty much everywhere in Bali since the Balinese aren't as big into privacy as the US is. Other than that, I wish I didn't have to leave (actually ended up extending my stay for two days before heading home to the states). It's an amazing place and if you stay there, know you won't be disappointing!

Owner's Response: Thank you Danica. It was a pleasure working with you on your travels and I see you made good use of your extended days! Ketut just finished the major refreshing of Amanda Villa that you saw. I am dying to see it, later this month when Paula and I are out to see the family! We will definitely be looking for finishing touches including privacy! And I'm really glad you liked the new view/meditation loft upstairs. I'll be posting new photos as soon as I can! I hope you find time to return, Patrick

Lovely villa, beautiful view and fantastic service

  • 5 of 5

We (a couple) stayed in this villa for a couple of nights and loved every minute of it. Our stay in Ubud was planned as a short stop over to decompress from the travel time between the United States and the dive resort at Wakatobi. Ibu Putu, Ketut and the entire family made sure we were well taken care of the entire time. Ketut handled our trips to and from the airport, Ibu Putus Warang (located a few short steps below the villa) provided us with a wonderful breakfast every morning and the entire family pitched in to get our luggage hauled up to the villa from the street and then back again. The villa is beautifully decorated and adequately furnished and the views are simply stunning. We knew what to expect before we arrived as this was not our first stay in Ubud, specifically this area of Ubud but I would caution first time visitors of a few things mentioned previously...there is a very long set of steps to get up to the villa from the street, it is not suitable for anyone with physical difficulties as there is no other way to access the villa from the main street. If you are sensitive to smoke and allergens this villa will probably not suit since it is an open air design and high up on the hill so it gets a lot of good breeze - which can also bring smoke from burning rice paddies at certain times of the year. Also, if you need a really cold bedroom for sleeping you may have a difficult time. The bedroom is most comfortable if completely open to the air outside but you do have the option of closing all of the doors/windows and using a provided floor fan/cooling unit - this does get the room slightly cooler than open breeze but not much since the design and architectural features do not allow you to completely seal the room from outside air flow. Again, none of these items were a complaint at all because we knew exactly what to expect before we arrived but these are certainly points to consider. This villa provides a very typical Bali experience and is completely worth it if you're willing and able to give up a few minor western luxuries. Our experience was fantastic from beginning to end and if we return to Ubud some day we would not hesitate to work with Ketut and we would love to stay in this wonderful villa again.

Owner's Response: Hi Mike: Thanks for your great review! We are so pleased that you were able to enjoy our villa and Ketut's family. The experience of interacting with a Bali family such as Keut's and Ibu Putu's brings another level of unique Bali experience to our guests. We have kept our villa as close to a traditional Bali home as we can with as many western luxuries we could add to make the stay comfortable. The views are unique but you are correct, it is a home for people who enjoy culture walking. Hope you can visit again.

A great villa in a great location!

  • 5 of 5

We (couple) stayed in the villa for 5 nights in July. The villa provides very comfortable accommodation and is well placed to explore the areas around, including central Ubud, on foot, while being far enough removed to provide peace and tranquility. Plenty of good places to eat within walking distance. The villa is located high on a ridge with great views in all directions. Ibu Putu, Ketut, Wayan and family looked after us very well, including pick up and drop off at the airport, a day trip by car, and breakfast every morning. Not to mention carrying our bags up the stairs! All up, we can totally recommend the villa, its location, and the support given from the time you arrive at the airport until you leave.

Memorable stay in Bali

  • 4 of 5

We are a couple who spent two weeks in the villa as first-timers in Bali. Overall impressions were positive. Booking experience was convenient. We highly recommend arranging an airport pickup to avoid hassles with taxis. Ibu Putu and family were delightful. The property is beautiful and nicely decorated. As others have noted, there are nearly 100 steps from the main road up to the villa; we were prepared for this, but other travelers with physical limitations would be advised to consider alternative accommodations. In our opinion the villa is best suited for a couple; the downstairs couch wouldn't make comfortable sleeping arrangements.

There were a couple of minor shortcomings with our experience that could easily be remedied. Supplies such as toilet paper and bar soap were not adequately stocked during our stay; we had to ask for extra TP more than once. The major drawback of the villa, as another reviewer has noted, is the darkness at night due to a lack of functional lighting. A floor lamp on each floor could easily solve that problem.

We had no issue with road noise, as another reviewer did. But those with sensitivity to smoke should take note: farmers regularly burn leaves and other plant matter in Bali and the smell of smoke occasionally carries into the villa due to its elevation and proximity to the rice fields of Penestanan.

During high season Ubud (and Bali in general) gets crowded, but it's lively and fun. We really enjoyed Bridges restaurant, especially the "Bridging Tables" dining experience on Saturday evenings where you get matched up with other groups for a dinner-party over a three-course dinner. Ubud is also close to many nearby villages, each with its own traditional specialty handicraft.

We would recommend this villa, but travelers should bear in mind some of the above considerations.

Owner's Response: Thank you George for you nice review and we enjoyed meeting you and your wife! We are always trying to improve our villa and are now getting ready for some big improvements to both bathrooms and kitchen this Fall. We hope you get the chance to see them next year! We'll look into floor lamps and already reminded everyone on the supplies. Incidentally, the smoke from the farmers is seasonal, one part in the rice planting cycle that allows 2 to 3 crops per year: plant, irrigate, grow, harvest, ducks-cleaning (my favorite), and burning! It only happens now and then and is part of an incredible rice-terrace agricultural system!

Gorgeous villa in quiet suburb

  • 5 of 5

Thank's Patrick and Ketut with his family for such great stay! The villa is gorgeous - 15min walk from Ubud centre, in a quiet suburb. It's very spacious, with amazing views from bedroom. Ketut was very helpful - great company, great advices, trips... the only thing we missed - we found out he is one of the best fisherman in Bali, unfortunately too late to taste freshly caught tuna :).
