About Jay Kulesza

I grew up spending my summers here since 1968 - my first dip in the waters of clear blue Crystal Lake was when I was 2 weeks old! Spending summers here was such a special part of my life growing up as was my mother and grandmother before her. We've been very fortunate to keep the property within the family for 5 generations and counting and one thing I find most rewarding is being able to share this special place with others.

Jay Kulesza purchased this cottage in 1922

Why Jay Kulesza chose Frankfort

Built in 1922 by my great grandparents, only within the past year has it been completely renovated bringing it up to the 21 century modern standards but continues to hold the old world charm of a northern Michigan cottage. Plenty of room to spread out inside and out there is room to explore on land, in the water or climbing trees. The area abounds with adventure and is regularly featured as one of America's finest destinations, also known as "the other West Coast".

Guestbook comments from the owner

Jay, we had a great time at the cottage. We are interested in next year also, thanks!

Helen's Heaven is Heaven

  • 5 of 5

A hidden gem. I highly recommend this charming, welcoming, relaxing, quiet, peaceful, comfortable, cozy, clean cottage. Our family of seven adults were extremely comfortable and enjoyed making and gathering for meals, putting together a puzzle, card games and good conversation. We also enjoyed enough space for solitude--reading, writing and navel-gazing. It was our home away from home for six nights and five days. Layers upon layers of generations upon generations of positive energy and love emanated throughout; we felt it the moment we walked in the front door and left some of our own when we said goodbye!

We enjoyed the big yard and just the right amount of beach. The location is on a more secluded part of Crystal Lake, as well as convenient to all the places we wanted to visit and things we wanted to do (and eat)--Sleeping Bear Dunes, Gwen Frostic, Cherry Hut, Crescent Bakery, Kilwin's fudge & ice cream, Point Betsie Lighthouse, walks along Lake Michigan watching the sun pool into the horizon, renting paddle boards (they deliver!) and fine dining at the Manitou.

Fresh air cross-circulates through the screened-in modern, new windows, with the help of strategically placed ceiling fans. I cannot stress enough how comfortable we all were.

Warm memories of Helen's Heaven will stay with me forever! I will be back!

Magical Lake Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 5 plus grandma had a lovely week at Helen's Haven. Everything you could hope for and more. Perfect location, cozy, well-equipped cottage, the beach just a few steps out of the back door. Something for all ages. Thank you, Jay, for a wonderful week!

Great getaway

  • 5 of 5

The house was great, set on a wooded lot with views of crystal lake. The beach area was perfect for the kids and adults. The house had well stocked kitchen and a very comfortable feel throughout. Frankfort was a short drive away for evening ice cream or a Lake Michigan sunset. Sleeping Bear Dunes hiking trails are a 30 minute drive.

Plenty to see and do all from a relaxing lakeside cottage. We’ll be back!

Beautiful home with room to spread out, and turquoise waters just steps beyond back door

  • 5 of 5

This is our 2nd year coming here. We love it, and are very happy we found such a nice home that's dog friendly. Our dog loves swimming in the lake. Home is beautifully furnished and has washer/dryer, full kitchen, BBQ grill.... everything you need to immediately settle in and get comfortable. Sleeping Bear Dunes, Traverse City and other great destinations are 30-60 minutes away, so easy day trips. Only on this 2nd trip did we find a great trailway along the coast of Crystal Lake. Go east on main road from home to DNR boat launch on SE corner of lake, from there you can walk at least a mile or 2 in either direction I think. With views of the lake along the whole path. The owner (Jay) is always very responsive and great to work with.

Beautiful cottage - great experience!

  • 5 of 5

We decided to book this cottage with some friends (including a kid and a dog) for the Memorial weekend. The cottage is very nice inside and wonderful outside. We loved the private beach on Crystal Lake and having a barbecue in the yard. :-)

Thanks for the great experience! We would widely recommand this cottage for group of friends or families.

Best experience in the Frankfort area

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time staying at Helen's Haven. I've been coming to the area twice a year for the past decade, and this was easily the best property I have stayed at. It was very clean and fully stocked with everything we needed for an excellent week. It's hard to beat a a relaxing night by the fire after a full day of hiking Sleeping Bear. Thank you for everything!
