About Mark and Sharon Riley
We have loved living and raising our four children in the mountains of Western North Carolina since 1978. We have enjoyed staying in many VRBO rentals while vacationing and want to share our mountain views and local attractions and activities with others. We think this is an amazing area to live and visit. While new to VRBO, we are experienced landlords to long term happy tenants. We both work full-time jobs, one in education and one in medical. If you contact us during the school/work day, please be patient as our students and work come first during those hours. We now have four adult children, in their 30's, spread over four states. Three of our children are teachers and one is a surgeon. We currently have 10 grandchildren. We are blessed! Between visiting family and especially grandchildren, we enjoy visits to the Biltmore Estate, hiking and spending time outdoors in these beautiful mountains. Feel free to ask information about the abundant local attractions and events occurring throughout the year.

Why Mark and Sharon Riley chose Swannanoa
We loved this cozy, modernized 1925 historic home the first time we saw it. From its beautiful brick exterior, to the warm, inviting interior, this house feels like home. We have done numerous improvements, including uncovering and restoring the beautiful hardwood floors. Our home faces the site of the former Beacon Blanket factory. Charles D. Owen, the owner of The Beacon Blanket Manufacturing Company moved his company brick by brick from New Bedford, Massachusetts to Swannanoa, North Carolina in the year 1925. Beacon built homes, stores, markets, roads, and employed police and firemen. They created an area that the community could enjoy to entice workers to move to Swannanoa to supply the mill with workers. Our home was one of the original homes built to house one of the supervisors of the factory. Beacon blankets boomed. During WWII the mill started to produce blankets for the soldiers fighting over seas. The factory employed over 2,200 workers during the war years, and was the largest blanket manufacturer in the world. After the war, the factory continued to produce Beacon blankets and employed large amounts of people from the Swannanoa Valley until the factory closed in 2002. On September 3, 2003, we personally watched in disbelief as the Beacon Factory burned to the ground despite the efforts of 32 different fire departments and over 500 personnel who responded to fight this fire. If you are curious, the name Swannanoa comes from the Indian name Shawano or Shawnee, referring to the early Indian tribe in the area, or from a Cherokee word meaning "beautiful river." We are proud to own a part of the history of this area and help preserve this history.
What makes this Bungalow unique
We love sitting on the front porch and enjoying the view of the mountains by day and the stars by night. The cool shade of the back marble patio is a great place to relax. We enjoy walking the level streets, within a few blocks of restaurants, coffee shops, churches, fire department, and the historic buildings of downtown Swannanoa. It is only a quick drive to the unique shops of downtown Black Mountain, the hiking trails of Montreat, the Biltmore Estate, all the attractions of the Asheville area, and access to the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Cozy, comfortable, convenient
We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Beacon Bungalow! It was a very cozy, comfortable house, with a big kitchen with all the necessaries to cook. Its location right off I-40 made it very convenient to get into Asheville and explore the surrounding area. It is also very close to a huge grocery store.
Check-in and check-out were very easy, and Mark and Sharon were easily accessible by phone whenever we had questions. I would definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone visiting the area!
Clean, Accessible, Comfy Place to Stay!
We enjoyed our stay at the Beacon Bungalow! It was right near Asheville - only 15 minutes (and less) away! There was an Ingles right down the street, as well as a CVS and many gas stations. The place was very clean with a full kitchen, an outside grill, 2 separate rooms and a gas fireplace! Loved it! Can't wait to come back for the spring or summer when it's a little warmer.
Thank you for letting us making your house our home for a couple of nights!
We are glad you enjoyed the convenience of our location and what the house has to offer. You did come during some record setting cold temperatures! We would love to have you come visit in one of our other three seasons. This area has a wide variety to offer during each season. Come again!
Clean, well-stocked and quaint cottage
The owners maintain this property very well and provide anything you could need from coffee filters, laundry detergent, hand soap and helpful info and guides about the area. Great communication throughout the booking and arrival process. While not in the heart of Asheville or main points of interest, easy Interstate access and short drives.
We like that our home is centrally located to Black Mountain, Montreat, Chimney Rock to the east to Asheville to the west, with many other areas to the south and north in a short driving distance and easy access to the Interstate.
We are always available to answer questions or respond to our guests and try to provide as many comforts of home as we can.
excellent home close to ashvillle area
We loved staying here. the home is 20 minutes from biltmore and 40 minutes from chimney rock. We had a family of 7 and were pleasantly surprised by how much space was in the home. the house was fully stocked and wonderfully clean. Full sized washer and dryer was a bonus! We would absolutely stay here again if visiting the ashville area.
We like how the location is perfect for going both east to Black Mountain, Montreat, Chimney Rock and beyond and west to Asheville and all there is to do there. Also many events are held right in Swannanoa.
Having a full size washer and dryer is so nice when we are traveling - it was a purchase we had to make for our guests!
Perfect place and close to everything
What a charming home, and oh so clean. It was so enjoyable to come home after a day of sightseeing to relax in front of the fireplace. This house had everything we needed.
Thank you for sharing your home with us.
We love sitting by the fire after a busy day, too! Come back anytime!
This house was perfect for our needs. We had a great time and made many memories!
