About Ruth and Arnold Metz
We have lived in many wonderful places but when we discovered Sauvie Island we felt we had "come home." We hope to share this wonderful place with others who will enjoy and prize it.
Ruth and Arnold Metz purchased this House in 2016
Why Ruth and Arnold Metz chose Multnomah County
We have dreamed of having a River Island Retreat house near our home where others could enjoy the beauty and serenity of this unique island. We have remodeled the house to make it comfortable for guests who relish the beauty and serenity of nature and the rural life. We live across the drive where we will be available as needed. We look forward to pointing out special places on and off the Island to make your stay enjoyable.
What makes this House unique
River Island Retreat sits on a hill---a great vantage point for the long-view to the West Hills--and the near view of the fertile farmland, the neighboring pinery, surrounding trees, shrubs, flowers, the giant oaks on the property, and the eagles and osprey, heron, deer and other wildlife that abound. There is a view from every room. We especially like the great room with its vaulted ceiling, the spacious master bedroom and the upstairs "tree-house" bedroom, the cheerful, fully-equipped kitchen, and the well-appointed bathrooms. We like the spaces outside for relaxing--patios, deck, and balcony. We make sure breakfast fixings are on hand following the day of your arrival including locally roasted Sauvie Island Coffee and something fresh-baked to go with it.

This well equipped and beautifully decorated house surrounded by picturesque farm land was the perfect location for a family Christmas retreat. Although only an easy 20 minute drive from downtown Portland, Sauvie Island provides a wonderful rustic setting and offers a number of opportunities to commune with nature!
Ruth welcomed us upon arrival and gave us a brief tour of the property before leaving us with a basket of delicious local food products. Thanks Ruth, we had a super time and the snow on Christmas day was the icing on the cake!
Keith and Susan--it was a pleasure to meet and to host you. And thank you for leaving the house shipshape. Please come back--it's beautiful here at every season. We look forward to your return.

HEAVEN ON EARTH!
Tucked away in an emerald swath of greenery on Sauvie Island is River Island Retreat. This beautiful, comfortable, well-appointed house was home to our family for nearly two months as our two children healed from kidney transplant surgery. It was just what we all needed: peace, serenity, quiet - yet close to the city for our frequent trips to OHSU hospital. There are beautiful views from every window, and if you are relaxing on the deck you are sure to see great blue herons, white herons, sand hill cranes, Canada geese, ospreys, and bald eagles to name a few of the many birds that inhabit the island. There are peaceful lanes and country roads to walk or bike on just out the front door. Nearby are wildlife reserves, beaches, working farms, and the beautiful Willamette and Columbia Rivers. Best of all were the new friends we made: Ruth, the gracious owner of the property, and her beautiful horses and dogs.
Already Planning Return Trip!
I booked this property for my husband and his hunting pals (I didn't attend) and he's just returned home telling me all about the property- better than expected, photos don't do it justice and how great the house was laid out for their group. He's also wanting us to return for a family get-away soon! Looks like the wifey is headed to Sauvie Island! WaaaHOO!
We are happy that your guys enjoyed the house. We appreciate that they took good care of it.
The house is aesthetically beautiful, spotlessly clean, and full appointed, while also having a mud room, spacious laundry room, very large adjoining covered multi-carport, plenty of external parking--all "zones" your guys appreciated having.
River Island Retreat is well-suited for the various purposes of our guests, from family reunions, couples getaways, writers and photographers and birders, hikers and cyclists and paddlers, rowers, and kayakers, conference goers. It's close to Portland yet a world away. Guests undergoing health care at the world-class Oregon Health Sciences Hospital, VA, and other health centers have stayed here for their recovery on the therapeutic Sauvie Island in the comfort and surrounded by the beauty of the River Island Retreat.
Now, we will look forward to your family stay. Fall and Winter are wonderful times on Sauvie Island--you need not wait too long!
A peaceful oasis
Ruth's house provided us was a wonderful place to stay when my sister was getting married on the island. The house was well stocked for cooking meals and with plenty of towels and blankets for our whole crew. Most of all Ruth was so kind, letting my nieces pet and feed her beautiful horses and even had a wonderful welcome basket waiting for us when we arrived.
River Island Retreat is located on Sauvie Island, a river island in the confluence of the Columbia and Willamette rivers. It's unique rural character offers a beautiful and serene respite from the busy world while the amenities of the Portland metropolitan area are just 15 miles away. Locals appreciate Sauvie Island for its unique rural character, historic and cultural resources, abundant wildlife, rich farmland and local produce, and especially for its exquisite beauty. It is a 26,000 acre oasis in the midst of all the metropolitan amenities one could want.
