Welcome to the beautiful Flint Hills! We hope you will come enjoy The Bunkhouse! Originally built to accommodate groups of visitors to the farm, it's perfect for a family with kids, group of friends, a couple, or the sole traveler who wants to enjoy a relaxing visit to the historic prairies of Kansas! Our Bunkhouse offers views of the prairie, a quaint red barn and beautiful mature oak trees. We look forward to hosting you!
Minutes outside of Matfield Green, Kansas is The Bunkhouse just waiting for visitors like you! It sits on 20 acres with plenty of room to explore, enjoy time with your friends and simply slow down and relax. The property boasts two houses, with the Main House (occupied) and The Bunkhouse available for rent. Originally built to accommodate visitors to the ranch, The Bunkhouse continues to do just that and comfortably house family, friends and visiting guests. It is nestled in a picturesque location with unique beauty enjoyed each season. Come any time of the year to see, and enjoy it, for yourself!
The Bunkhouse itself has many windows through which to enjoy the scenic views that surround it. There is also much natural wood all throughout, from the dark beams overhead, to the lighter colored wood floors and stairs. The downstairs of The Bunkhouse has a king bed and bathroom (Jack and Jill style). There is a small but efficient kitchen where you will find everything you'll need to cook delicious meals for you and your friends. The open living/dining room is a great central area and also boasts a woodstove. There's nothing better than sitting by the warm glow of the fire on snowy winter nights. The upstairs has a landing and a comfortable sitting area before entering the large upstairs bedroom. We have recently added a washer and dryer upstairs as well, for our guests convenience.
Whether you are on a business trip or a vacation we hope you will come enjoy The Bunkhouse soon!
Our guests are welcome to enjoy the luxuries of the bunkhouse and its spacious deck, as well as the big backyard, the grill and other unique features of this property. Come kick up your feet and relax indoors and out! Bring your bike and enjoy the country roads of Matfield Green, or take the short hike in the cedar lane and down to the creek. Grab a favorite book and enjoy reading, (or napping) while you listen to the relaxing sound of the bubbling brook. Or, enjoy hunting for fossils & arrowheads all while keeping your feet cooled off in the fresh water. There are also many varieties of birds in the established trees on and around the property, so if you are a bird enthusiast you won't be disappointed. There's nothing better then waking up to their sweet songs in the morning! We want to do all we can to make sure you enjoy your visit, so if you have any questions don't hesitate to ask!
You will find some items in your fridge for your first morning's breakfast, as we want to be sure you're well taken care of when you come to The Bunkhouse.
Whether you are a bike enthusiast, artist, here for the Symphony in the Flint Hills, or maybe just passing through, we think you'll be very comfortable here. Located between Wichita and Emporia, Kansas, is this beautiful part of the country! Matfield Green offers the historic Pioneer Bluffs, with charming barn and the local "Bank", now turned art gallery to tourists. An enjoyable scenic drive down Kansas Highway 177 takes you to the quaint Cottonwood Falls where the historic courthouse is located. Selfguided tours there are allowed and encouraged. It is a beautiful building. There are also a few wonderful antique shops to enjoy in downtown Cottonwood as well as the Symphony Office, if you have time be sure to stop in there to enjoy their displays. A wonderful art gallery that captures the beauty of the Flint Hills by one who's lived here many years, is another must see. There is also a small library as well as a museum celebrating local culture and history.
Many are drawn to Chase County for its historical significance and preservation of the prairies, and some are drawn for its hospitality! Two restaurants you won't want to miss are Ad Astra Food & Drink in Strong City and the Grand Central Hotel & Grill in Cottonwood Falls. They are located just a mile apart & easy to find. Local cattle ranchers have been known to say the Hotel is the best place to get a steak.... anywhere! That's sayin' something! Ad Astra draws locals and many out-of-towners with it's unique menu and all around great food! One other notable mention would be the newly opened Chuck Wagon Cafe. With decor celebrating local history & the historic cowboy way of life, their hearty breakfasts do not dissapoint!
With Emporia being the host to a major disc golf tournament (The Glass Blown Open) every year, many are drawn to Cottonwood Falls' fabulous new disc golf course. It boasts impressive, locally quarried rock and very unique holes! So come stay with us, enjoy local hospitality and head in to Cottonwood to enjoy a few rounds on the new course!
Another "must see" in the area is the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve. Very little of the historic grassland of the plains has been left untouched. Here in the Flint Hills is a beautiful piece of nature left in its original state. Be sure to make time to stop in and enjoy the very comfortable and informative Welcome Center and take a tour through the historic grassland where the native Bluestem grass is still growing wild!
One other enjoyable piece not to be overlooked is the beautiful and ever changing Kansas sky. Watching a thunderstorm as it rolls in is one of our favorite pastimes. The sunsets and sunrises are truly impressive as well. Be sure to take time to relax and enjoy the view from whatever vantage point you find yourself. The nighttime sky and bright stars, as well as glowing fireflies on summer nights, create a truly memorable experience here in Matfield Green.
