A delightful island home nestled on a hill overlooking the emerald green and aqua blue waters of Coral Bay and Hurricane Hole. Within easy driving distance to Saint John's most beautiful beaches and hiking trails, this is a private, peaceful, vacation hideaway.

Coral Bay and the East End of Saint John offer the true experience of secluded island life. This part of the island, where the house is located, has maintained an unhurried, uncrowded, simple, and friendly way of life that has long since disappeared in other parts of the Virgin Islands. The beautiful beaches and crystal clear waters of the US Virgin Islands National Park combined with the comfort and privacy of the house gives you the ideal Caribbean vacation experience.

The West Indian-style home has two bedrooms in separate 'pods' for maximum privacy. The many decks are perfect for enjoying a drink after a tough day at one of the many gorgeous beaches of Saint John!

The spacious kitchen was completely re-designed and renovated in 2017, including:

- All-new Kitchen Aid stainless steel appliances (including refrigerator, stove/oven, dishwasher) and new microwave

Guestbook comments from the manager

"We loved “Banana Cabana and the views looking out either side of Fortsberg and to the water. The house is well equipped... We liked being able to walk to Skinny’s and Donkey Diner. Favorite snorkeling was at Salt Pond Bay, Little Lameshur, and Leinster Bay. Cinnamon Beach was beautiful and we even got in a little body surfing. I’m at avid birder and enjoyed the native species right from the decks. Our stay was a great relaxing break from our usual work lives and cold New England. Thanks!" -Peter, Ruth and Emily

Christmas at Banana Cabana

  • 4 of 5

Banana Cabana was a bit snug for us, but its cute and it worked out fine. My wife and I brought our two boys (ages 19 and 22). The house was spotlessly clean when we arrived. The main upper level includes the living/dining area, pullout sofa, a great (small) deck, kitchen and main bathroom. Across a small deck was a separate building with the master (queen) bedroom with its own deck and another bathroom. Take a few steps outside and down a flight of stairs to the lower level, there is another (queen) bedroom with a deck. We chose to sleep downstairs and give the boys the run of the upper level, alternating nights between the pull out sofa and master bedroom. Modest, but appropriate furnishings. Plenty of sheets and towels. We used the outside grill and washer/dryer and and all worked well. The refrigerator took a couple of days to get cool and we almost called for a repair, but it ended up getting cool. Follow the directions in the guest book! The stereo system did not work as the CD player was stuck in the closed position, we could not dial in radio stations, there were no cassettes (!) to play, and no inputs for iPhone or computer. Internet was good during the day, but slow or off at night. The pool is up the hill just a little bit and was unused, so we had it all to ourselves whenever we wanted to take and end of day dip. Great deck, hammock and view from up there! My only criticism is that the directions could be clearer about reaching the house. We arrived after dark and the zigzag hill up to the house was treacherous in the dark the first time. We actually started sliding backwards and almost went off the road! I am a great driver, and had the directions been a bit clearer I would have been better prepared for the first trip up the hill. After that, I got the hang of it and it was fine, except it is very slippery after it rains. FOUR WHEEL DRIVE IN LOW GEAR IS A MUST. Overall, I would recommend this property for two couples, or a family with older children, as long as you are OK with them being separated by having to go outside to the other building or downstairs. Both are just steps away. The location is quiet (with the exception of the early morning roosters crowing!) and the view from the upper decks is lovely. Finally, I will say the location is great. Close to all there is in Coral Bay without being right in it, and close to all the east end beaches. Brown Bay and Hansen Bay were our faves. Enjoy Banana Cabana and rustic Coral Bay!

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your nice review. I'm glad it worked out for you. It seems like it was a good fit for your family, with the two older children. I agree with you, 4WD is a must for the island of St John. It's not worth saving a few dollars on something that is not 4WD. Many rentals companies do not offer non-4WD vehicles for St John, but I have seen more non-4WD in recent years. Thank you again, and we look forward to hosting you in the future!

We love banana cabana

  • 4 of 5

We loved staying at banana cabana! So peaceful, clean and relaxing, great location! We enjoyed our family time! Not ideal for young children unless you want to share a room with them. Ideal for a family of 4 with kids a little more independent, privacy and great common space too. We hope to stay there again!

overall a good value

  • 3 of 5

We had trouble finding it in the dark, with the steep zigzag driveway into the development and the unit being on the inside of one of the zigzags so our headlights did not hit it. And the sign at the entrance deck said "Gate House" instead of Banana Cabana. We found the instructions on the counter identifying the place as Banana Cabana. The next morning it was apparent that the directions were OK.

First impression was that it was a little old or run down. The stove, refrigerator, etc were old but worked fine. The "loft" had a big garbage can and animal droppings, so it has not been used for some time and likely hasn't been needed since the last time a large family rented it. No animals found and they have rodent traps in place. There was no air conditioning in the bedrooms as we (mistakenly?) expected, but the ceiling fans did the job.

The layout was unusual, but we came to like it. Beautiful views from all decks, mostly mountainous terrain but two views of the water. The main building had all the common living areas on the upper floor, with one bedroom below, stairway outside. The bathroom for the common area and lower bedroom was on the upper level with a separate entrance. Both levels had decks accessible only from the inside. The other building contained a nice bedroom up with a deck and the laundry/storage/utility room below. The bathroom for the upper bedroom had a separate entrance from the same deck. Both bathrooms had open access to their outdoor showers, which provided just enough privacy.

On about the third day we noticed that the drain from the side of the kitchen sink with the garbage disposal wasn't draining well, so we tried the garbage disposal. It didn't work. We stopped at the maintenance office and they directed me to the breaker box location. After tripping and resetting breakers, the disposal worked and cleared the food, but there was something like glass in it. Didn't need it again but I informed the office that it needed to be cleared. Also on about that day, we went to do laundry and found a load of bedding in both the washer and dryer. We finished them and then did ours.

We never used the pool as were too tired after our daily activities to climb up the hill to use it. Although Skinny Legs is just down the hill as advertised, it would be a steep hike back up. Not for the faint of heart. Plan on driving everywhere.

Again, a good value. I would recommend this place to others armed with this knowledge.

Amazing place to finish our trip!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights at Banana Cabana after a week sailing in the BVI. It was amazing! Kirsten gave us excellent directions for getting there from Cruz Bay which was good because we arrived after dark. The house was perfect. An excellent kitchen that was well stocked for us for cooking. Comfortable rooms for our 3 adults and 2 kids (6 and 8). The recommendations for eating out, snorkeling and other activities were spot on. We enjoyed snorkeling at many different spots on the island, did a few ranger led hikes in the park and ate at Skinny Legs for lunch. Coral Bay was so quiet and peaceful. We enjoyed the resident hummingbird, lizards, caterpillars and such. Beautiful views and so relaxing. We rented a 4-wheel drive which was essential as we had rain. We loved the laundry facilities in site. The common space was relaxing and comfortable. We felt so at home. The beds were comfy and the bathrooms and showers great! We can't wait to return! Thanks Kirsten for everything!

Very Peaceful

  • 5 of 5

I visited my son and we both stayed at Banana Cabana. I felt completely safe and secure. The breeze was wonderful, no need for A/C. Windows open at night, taking outdoor showers, looking around the property landscape , it was all so awesome. Very clean and comfortable. Thank you for sharing your house with us. We really enjoyed our stay.
