The best surfing spot in Europe: Baleal beach is boasting the reputation of being known as one of the best if not the best area to surf in Europe. In October is the Rip Curl World Surfing championships right on our stretch of beach in front of my house. All year round is great for surfing because the temperature is good and the waves are spectacular. There are lots of surf schools if you are a beginner and we can arrange lessons for you as we know good qualified teachers locally.
The area is very natural and unspoilt, beautiful and relaxing.

About Fiona Burd
I am an actress from England and I am currently living in Portugal because I wanted to give my daughter some freedom to grow up away from the busy often tough streets of Hackney, London. I teach drama and Performing arts here to mainly Portuguese kids in a city called Caldas da Rainha. There are English speaking students as well so that helps me a lot. I love the natural unspolit beauty here in the Silver Coast area and the nature is wonderful. The sea and coast line here is very dramatic and it attracts more and more surfers every year with a growing reputation of one of the best places to surf in Europe. I like to train and keep fit and there are lots of great runs or cycle paths here you can take and follow. And if you go to one of the horse riding centres they can take you out on hacks for miles all through the wonderful countryside. This definately has been a great 6 years living here, I wouldn't change the experience for anything.
Fiona Burd purchased this House in 2006
Why Fiona Burd chose Baleal
Well I choose this property because of its amazing location definately. All round there are sea views. The cliffs and rocks are just 2 minutes walk from my house. Sometimes the landscape and scenery from the sea to the land is so dramatic its like a moving work of art. Early morning you see the tiny, little fishing boats navigate there way out to sea to go catch their daily dinner and you see the divers looking for lobster and the old and young alike on the rocks collecting all sorts of strange and wonderful shellfish. My dog came back from the rocks once with a starfish the size of a small pig, it was very beautiful and being a vegetarian and animal lover I had to be super brave and carry it back down to the rocks and give it back a safe home tucked quietly away from more playful dogs eyes. The view is priceless and I feel blessed when I look out across to the sea and not a dirty dusty London bus lane!
What makes this House unique
Breathing fresh air, having more time to create, write and develop the ideas I want to one day bring to light and produce myself as a performer. Eating fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables that is grown and produced locally. Forgot to mention the enless wonderful cheeses, types of bread, wines and Ports! If you want extra cleaning it can be aranged with my cleaner who is 100% trust worthy for just 6 euros per hour and she works very fast because she knows my house well as she has been cleaning it for several years. She does get very busy in the summer so it's good to know in advance ifyou would like her. If you would like some fitness and personal training I can arrange for you to work with one of the best fitness and nutrition experts in Portugal with over 20 years experience. You can work individually or in a pair for 25 euros per hour. If you would like surfing lessons or to hire equipment I can arrange this for you also through one of the best and longest running surf schools in Baleal. It is better to book a taxi locally to come from the airport to Baleal than to get one at the airport, it's cheaper. I can arrange this for you also if you don't plan to hire a car or get the buses. If you want the buses you have to go to the site for Rede Expresso in Campo Grande or Sete a Rios bus stations in Lisbon. The get the bus for Peniche and then a local taxi.

Home from home
The house was lovely to stay in. We all liked the little touches to make it feel homely and friendly. Only one thing; my bathroom smelt of drains. I understand it's quite a usual thing in Portugal.
I'm sorry if your toilet smelt of drains but every thing is kept spotless and I always use blue loos in the toilet system so it's definitely not due to a lack of hygiene but more like the complicated drainage system.
Absolutely cozy and nice place to stay on vacation. 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms, kitchen with small cozy patio, 20 minutes walk to the beach with seaside restaurants, 7 minutes walk to the grocery store and ATM. Easy house rules and easy communication with Fiona.
Highly recommend for 7-8 people group. Enjoy!
Thanks Vladyslav for the review, come back any time you were great guests. I'm thinking though you must have walked to the beach via the road way as it's only 5 minutes if you go to the headlands and follow the path down to the beach. Still next time that way :)
Excellent stay at Baleal
We had a fabulous family holiday at Baleal, Portugal in June. Fiona, the owner, was extremely helpful before and after the holiday. Always responded to emails promptly. The location of the property is perfect for surfers and non surfers. (Also easy drive from Lisbon.) Good local supermarket, with much needed coffee and croissants for early risers. Property was well maintained and beautifully decorated. Kitchen utensils could be updated/renewed, however we managed to cook for five hungry surfers each night. Nearby village of Ferrel (with in walking distance from property, though car required for heavy shopping) has excellent bakers, butchers, fishmongers for those who like cooking and more coffee shops! Silver coast surf school, within four minute walk, extremely helpful, drove us to surf spots each day. For non surfers bike hire, skateboard, body boarding shops abound. Peniche was an hours walk along the beach or ten minute drive away (out of peak season). Easy parking and large well stocked supermarkets. Good fish restaurants there as well. Would definitely go back again.
Thanks for the info, I've been away from the house for almost a year and I will check the kitchen utensils as they get destroyed fast :)
Very well equipped, clean & all the home comforts
We have recently returned from staying @ Casa Huckleberry & I've got to say this was probably the best holiday we've been on. Before we went I did contact Fiona quiet a but to ask several questions and she was extremely helpful, nothing was too much trouble. The house was perfect, great location, clean & had everything you could need. The resort was fairly quiet when we went in September which was nice as was told Aug was really busy, didn't have to Que for anything & had lots of space on the beach. In our group there was a mix of beginners and intermediates, but the resort was great for both levels & lessons are very reasonable. I can also recommend the fish restaurant down by the beach, which was lovely & very reasonable. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone, we had an amazing holiday & hoping to go back next year.
Thanks for the lovely review, I'm glad you had a great time Baleal is an amazing little piece of paradise and I only feel privilaged to be able to let people get to know it. And my house I believe is in one of the best locations not a noisy area, peaceful and relaxing but within walking distance. We got the Rip Curl World Championships starting any day now so it will be megga megga busy all the roads go like London traffic, wow! But it's fun. Hope UK winter isn't to tough, come and see us again sometime :)
Very nice and well equipped house in Casais Baleal
I booked the house very early and was very curious because it looked so nice on the pictures. When we arrived it was a surprise - the house is very nice, well equipped and very clean. Fiona is a very nice and helpful landlord.
The beach is 10min. walk down the road, a nice jogging track starts directly behind the house. It's not far to Peniche, daytrips to Caldas da Rainha and Obidos are a must.
We really enjoyed this holiday - I can only recommend this house!
Thankyou for the lovely review, I feel very lucky to own that house as the location is so wonderful, I'm glad you found the jogging tracks. I used to run from my house all alone the beach to the Marriott hotel and on the right side of my house going up towards the Marriott there was hardly anyone on the beach even in high summer, except surfers and fishermen land casting. It is truely a humbling experience with geat big beautiful waves coming crashing towards you, just knowing how powerful they are and that the beach is so unspolit is such a rare thing now.
Come back and see us again one day aand enjoy the rest of your summer :)
Had a great holoday ,
The property was clean and well maintained. It is situated in a fantastic place with lovely beaches, and great resturants all within easy reach. Plenty of cafes for drinks and snacks, great Brazilian restaurant for steak lovers, fish restaurants in nearby Penich. Lots of water sports, great place all round.
Great, I'm glad you liked the Brazilian meal, I always recommend "Goucho'S" and it's nice you don't need to take the car to get there especially as they have a great wine list. I hope you have a great trip now to the Azores before heading back to Canada. I will come and visit you next time and go grizzly bear tracking. A bit more wilder than dolphin watching at the Berlengas. Have a great summer see you again soon :)
Great golden sand surfing beaches along the peninsula from Peniche to Baleal. There is a wide variety of waves-sand, reef, left, right, hollow, mellow-all within a few minutes of each other. Especially the famous left hand reef break at Lagido. And then there's Supertubos called Peniches Queen waves, spectacular! Also lots of surf camps to learn to surf safely. Kite surfing has also become extremely popular at Peniche beach and Stand up Paddle boarding. Mustn't forget it's perfect for family who just want to relax in the sun and bath along the miles of golden sandy beaches which are lifeguard patrolled during the summer months. Then there's Golf at Praia del Ray, 18 hole par 72 Championship Course, part woodland and part links, voted 2nd best in Europe. Near by is Obidos Lagoon and ancient beautiful Obidos Castle and World heritage Town one of the most historical sites in Portugal. There is nearly always an event on in Obidos for you to enjoy, including The now famous Chocolate Festival, the Opera festival, the Medieval Festival and much more. If you enjoy shopping visit Caldas da Rainha with it's daily traditional market and mixture of modern shops and boutiques, or near by Peniche with lots of great restaurants famous for it's daily catch super fresh fish and shell fish restaurants And wineries and the wines are fantastic and low prices, fantastic local wines at unbeatable prices. There's a riding school in San Bernadino, 5 minutes away and also CEIA International Equestrian centre is just 25 minutes away and they hold many prestigious riding competitions with competitors from all over the world. It is one of the best horse riding centre in Europe. The 5 star Marriott Hotel at Praia d'el Ray has a large indoor and outdoor pool. Near by our house is the new Peniche Surf Lodge which as a large pool and Jacuzzi on it's roof and for a small fee non-residents can go and use them and it also has a great roof top chill out area with music for the sunsets, beautiful. Between Baleal and Peniche is a large water park for lots of family fun. Going further away from Baleal towards Lisbon is Sintra with it's beautiful Palaces and Moorish Castle and so much wonderful history which makes it very magical to visit. Other Activities: Beautiful walks all around the coast line. Boat trips locally to the Amazing Berlenga Islands and Nature reserve, hopefully seeing the Dolphins on the trip. Golf: Less than ten minutes away is Praia D'el Rey with the five-star Marriott Hotel and it's 18 hole Par 72 Championship course, part woodland and part links. It was opened in 1987 and the course is 6,467 metres. The grass type is Fairways Rye/Festuca. Greens, Bent/Penncross. Green fee: 18 holes: €85.00/€65.00 Buggy: €35.00 one hour lesson €48.00. Holes:2x9, Par:67 Also about 40 minutes away is Quinta do Brincal in Rio Major. It's a par 72 Golden Eagle course. Holes: 18 hole woodland Opened in 1994 Grass type: Fairways, Penn Eagle. Greens, Penncross. Green Fee 18 holes: €45.00 Monday to Friday, €55.00 weekends. Buggy €32.50 Lessons: €22.50 About 40 minutes in the direction of Lisbon is Oitavos at Quinta da Marinha which opened in 2001, it was designed on the lines of the Royal Dublin with nine holes out and nine holes back. It offers a mixture of forest pine and windswept duneland and features a unique run of holes on the back nine embracing two par fives and three delightful par threes. Holes: 18 hole Par 71 Course length: 6,303 metres. Grass type Fairways and Tees, Bermuda 419, greens, Agrostis. Green fee: 18 holes: €150 Another favourite is Penha Longa Atlantico. October is the month when rip curl world surfing championships comes to Portugal and holds their competition with the best surfers in the world right along my houses stretch of beach.
Rates & Availability
Additional information about rental rates
A VERY SPECIAL LOW, LOW price from November 2016- December 18th 2016 and January 2017-April 2017 PER MONTH has been added which included bedding and towels, 1 free large gas bottle and wifi but if the month is booked the guest must be willing to pay the water/electricity and if extra gas bottles are needed? They cost about 80 euros each and water and electricity depends on the amount of people staying? With the price so low for rental I couldn't cover those costs myself as a monthly booking but guests spreading the cost between them would be low.
