The building is located about 40 minutes from the airport, close to two public 18 hole golf courses. From the time we first arrived at the gate, we were greeted with Aloha from Wendall one of the staff that helped us situate check in. What a clean, secure facility - everything looked freshly painted and very nice. Super friendly staff! Upon entering the unit, very clean, comfortable, stocked with utensils, extra beach towels, bedding, and even beach chairs. The view from the balcony is breathtaking! Mauna Lahi to the left outback stretches to the Point and the sunsets are what is magical. We found ourselves just staring off the balcony into the open ocean views having breakfast, lunch and dinner on the balcony at the least once a day if not more. The surrounding area is considered country, and that's what has always drawn me to Makaha. Away from the craziness of town, and hustle.. With plenty of Supermarkets, Tamura's and Wainae Market less than 10min away, or dining out options just plan to go out before 8pm otherwise you'll find yourself traveling up to Kapolei for late options. Love this place!!
Beautiful Beach but not a good location if you want to see the rest of the island
If you are content to hangout on the beach then this is probably the place for you. The pictures are accurate of the unit except that they are not recent pictures. Were taken when the unit was updated. We found some maintenance issues and was marginal on the cleaning. One of the problems was that there was no information about the unit only the condo rules. It took us a few days to realize that the air conditioning would not work if you did not have the patio doors closed tight...a sensor was installed. Since the doors did not fit well and did not lock it required that you fiddle with the doors until they were just right.
If you plan to cook your meals then you will need to make a trip down the island to Costco or some large market or farmers market to find fresh fruit and vegies. Buy lots of water. It will be challenge to not get dehydrated.
The traffic on the island will dictate when and where you can go...even though the island is small the traffic is among the worse in the US. The 13 miles from the end of the freeway to the condo will take you an hour most days (Sunday is the exception) if you travel after 2:00 in the afternoon...Traffic is a major problem on the island and that is a fact. There are amazing places to go and sights to see on Oahu but you will fight the traffic to get there and back.
The west side of the island has beautiful beaches that are very accessible with lots of parks but realize this is a very low income area and there are many houseless people that live on or near the beaches. Be respectful.
Aloha and thank you for your review. I believe that when you left you had given us a few maintenance items you felt needed attending to, including the doors. Thank you for bringing these items to our attention: they have all been addressed and taken care of. In regards to the traffic, you are correct. It seems that for the past six months or so, the traffic getting into Makaha has been worse that normal. To address the situation, the state just recently announced they are going to setup a "contra flow" lane in the afternoons to keep the traffic moving better. We all hope it works.
You mention in your review that the photos are accurate, but not recent. I found that a bit confusing, as the photos of the unit are less than a year old and I believe everything is still as it is shown in the photos.
