HURRICANE FLORENCE UPDATE -
We had some minor repairs to deal with on our beach house after hurricane Florence Sept. 2019 - mostly some minor water damage that penetrated past some outside wall sheathing into sections of insulation (outer wall). That was dealt with quickly because we were blessed to have met with the insurance adjuster and with ServPro the week after the hurricane. They went around the house with moisture meters to check. Good thing because, otherwise, we would not have known there were moisture issues. Some sections of sheetrock were torn out to remove the insulation, sprayed behind, dried for a week. We also went ahead and removed some sections of our flooring because water had found its way in under some of the outer walls and wet the subflooring anywhere from a few inches in up to a foot in towards the living areas.
Everything inside looked fine and dry, thanks in large part to our metal roof. However, after 3 days of 110 mph wind driven rain we should not have been surprised about water infiltration. Some outside siding was blown off but that proved to be a blessing.
The Good news out of this is we did go ahead with plans to replace all the vinyl siding with HardiPlank (fiber cement siding). The whole house is now re-sided, along with all new soffit and fascia. We had it installed in a special manner such that it supposed to withstand 125 mph winds, though we hope that never gets tested. :)
Surf City and Topsail Island had a lot of dune damage from hurricane Florence but they are in process of rebuilding the dunes! It is an amazing project. They are bringing sand in rebuild. Lots of heavy equipment to finish the job by March 2019, according to the Town of Surf City.
Then, in the fall of 2019 or spring 2020 the Town of Surf City is pressing on with the huge project of beach "renourishment." This project will advance the shoreline to 150 feet wide!
Other good news is the new 65 foot high bridge into Surf City was completed December 2019!
