The hosts Ron and Julie were generally welcoming. The Tuscan style abode is well appointed and was very cozy on a rainy weekend. The remote location was peaceful and quiet with a beautiful view. We enjoyed the shops of nearby Grass Valley. We hope to come back for another stay.
My wife and I wanted a couple days away from it all, and that is exactly what we got! We had an amazing relaxing weekend. Ron and Julie met us on arrival to make sure we were all set and then gave us plenty of space and privacy. The house is a ways outside of town, so make sure you bring any food you plan on cooking with you. Most of the drive is on paved roads, but there is maybe a mile of well maintained dirt road. Also the driveway to the top of the hill where the house is is pretty steep, so just prepare yourself. But the drive is worth it, the view from the top of the hill is amazing. This is definitely a rental for couples...leave your kids at home and escape to the mountains for a few days.
We spent 3 days here in October 2016 and greatly enjoyed our stay!! The house is lovely and comfortable (wonderful bed, wonderful fireplace) - - which was fortunate for us because it POURED rain all 3 days of our visit and we spent a lot more time in the house than we planned to when we booked. The hosts, Julie & Ron, were very communicative in the planning stage and helpful getting us settled when we arrived and then giving us space. It's also wonderfully secluded yet close to Grass valley & Nevada City (10-15 min by car). We would stay there again and absolutely recommend it. The only heads-ups, I have are: (1) The driveway is a bit nerve-wracking (narrow, twisty and steep) but it's nicely paved and you can go slowly and do fine (we went up and down a dozen times without incident, just a few white knuckles); and (2) The house is not especially set up for dining-in. The kitchen is lovely and well-appointed, but there isn't a comfortable dining table (probably due to space constraints) -- which is only a problem if you're looking to spread a large meal and tarry at the table. All in all, though, a wonderful vacation spot!
We had a fantastic anniversary weekend at this amazing property! Julie and Ron's property sits on a mountain top with commanding views. The casita, situated beyond the backyard pool, is self contained with nicely appointed bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living room area. There is also a loft with a single bed. Julie and Ron are wonderful hosts, starting our stay with a bottle of champagne and breakfast provisions; you might want to bring some groceries because once you settle in you might not want to leave (if we had to do it again we wouldn't!). If you do want to travel down to GV and NC, it is a relatively short drive. We were shocked at how distant and secluded we felt while at the casita and yet how quickly we could be in either of Grass Valley or Nevada City. We spent Day One taking breakfast mimosa's out by the pool, then leisurely reading in a variety of well spaced outdoor spots---lounge chaises by the pool, a generous table under the wisteria arbor, another smaller table with an umbrella, all with different perspectives on the hillside landscape. We saw deer daily (especially in the morning) and enjoyed being in the foothills on the edge of Fall. If you decide to cook on site go for it...the kitchen is up to date and we enjoyed the gas range and oven especially. If you want to BBQ, a small one is also available. One tip...the last 1000 ft of road is narrow with a couple of switchbacks, so go slow and try to arrive in the daylight hours. Still very well worth it, you will not be disappointed!
My husband and I wanted to visit the Grass Valley area for a long weekend. We found this little place and it was just perfect for a quiet and relaxing respite from the city. There were plenty of shady outdoor spaces for staring off into space from atop the hill, playing a board game, reading or just having conversation. We broke up the lounging with splashing in the very refreshing pool, and dabbled in the well-equipped kitchen for most of our meals. The indoor space was very comfortable and it really was a great getaway. Julie and Ron were exceptionally good hosts, available when needed but we pretty much didn't know they were there when we just wanted to be on our own. Before arriving, I had been a bit worried about the relative close proximity between the 2 buildings - their home and the guest house, but it was a non-issue. I definitely recommend this place. And do yourself a favor and stay at least 2 nights, so you can really enjoy all there is to offer here.
Our expectations were already high from reading prior reviews, but they were exceeded in every way. It's tempting to simply say add a few exclamation points to each of the positive statements in the other reviews, but here's our summary: The guesthouse is amazingly attractive and comfortable and thoughtfully stocked with everything one might need. The setting is private and peaceful, and the pool is gorgeous and serene. Julie & Ron provide so many items to delight their guests -- chocolates, wine, fruits, sodas, coffee, eggs, muffins and juice. Normally, we are up and about touring an area, but we found we wanted linger in the morning and return in the afternoon for a swim and to make dinner and dine outside. On top of all this comfort, you will find that Julie & Ron who are some of the warmest people you will ever meet and so attentive to their guests' privacy and comfort.
We visited Grass Valley/Nevada City because we are considering buying a second home there. We didn't know Julie & Ron were in the real estate business: They very respectfully won't volunteer that fact. We are so glad that we inquired about what they do professionally because it turns out that as long-time residents in the area, they are supremely knowledgable about Grass Valley/Nevada City and about home value and quality of construction (Ron is an appraiser and builder). We asked them to show us some properties, and we were amazed by how much we learned about the area and our preferred location. They are forthright and straightforward and will offer their opinions -- grounded in abundant fact -- about quality of construction, value and marketability. It was so much fun touring with them, and we trust that they would guide us to the right property.
Also, make sure that you ask Julie for her restaurant recommendations because she will efficiently point you to the best places that you can't always glean from Yelp or Travel Advisor. Some places that we enjoyed: Three Forks in Nevada City (super fresh, healthy food and great beer), South Pine (in Grass Valley and Nevada City), Summer Thyme's in Grass Valley, Back Porch Market in Grass Valley (delicious "take out", cheeses, wines, etc. -- we assembled a dinner with salmon with dill/lemon sauce, beet salad, quinoa stuffed squash, excellent cheeses, etc.) and New Moon in Nevada City (great small plates; main course of scallops was the weak link, but it was a special, so maybe stick to the regular menu).
