The Best Place we could have rented

  • 4 of 5

We loved our two week stay in this beautiful, peaceful spot. If you are looking for a luxury resort close to nightlife, this is not for you. What you get here is a nice home where you can make meals (note:no dishwasher, but everything provided to wash by hand), do laundry if you need to(need own detergent) and enjoy the beautiful countryside. We had our coffee every morning on the deck, soaking in the amazing view and listening to the birds. Regret we didn't go to the small beach across the road the first day, so we could have also make that a start for each day we were there. They provide chairs, snorkels, kids toys for beach and have outside shower for when you come back. There are many beautiful beaches within easy driving distance. The best beach nearby for snorkeling is at Turtle Bay Resort.

It is about an hours drive from the airport, and you will need rental car to stay here, but is a great jumping off point for exploring the Island.. The North Shore has so much to offer. We took day trips and spent a day in Pearl Harbour and a day in Waikiki and were very glad to get back to our lovely, laid back retreat. It is close to the Polynesian Cultural Center, which was a fun way to spend the day, ending with a luau and show. (Get the Ambassador package so you get a tour guide.)

There is no air conditioning, but the fans work well and it cools down to a comfortable temperature for sleeping at night. The house is roomy and could easily accommodate a large family. The extra bathrooms are unusual for rentals here and much appreciated.

My only complaint, is that while the livingroom furniture looked nice, it was not very comfortable to sit on for long. That being said, we spent a lot of time on the wonderful deck, out on adventures, or eating at the table so didn't sit there a lot.

We had a wonderful vacation and I would definitely recommend this place for people who want the type of holiday we had. It's NOT for people who want to party, have maid service or want modern, urban setting. It is ideal for families and people who want a relaxing getaway in the country. I would love to return to Oahu someday and would definitely stay here again

Amazing experience

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful house. Well appointed with far more than we expected from the loaded kitchen to the full range of beach equipment/toys. Fantastic master suite, so much room all around and finally an amazing location. Just steps from what was essentially a private beach (as in, we had it all to ourselves). We loved our stay and would love to come again. We would also enthusiastically recommend to any large family who wants to be together and cook for themselves (we had 7). Would also like to note that the booking process was very painless with no problems or stress.

Great rural location

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in Hualla. The accommodation is right across from a small beach. The sand is not perfect but it still makes for fun days with the kids. Theres also a little outdoor shower located at the house which is nice to hose the kids down after their swim. The drive to the Polynesian Cultural Center is short so we had the opportunity to go twice. It's also a relatively short drive to the North Shore where we got to watch a portion of surf competition. We also went for a shopping day at Haleiwa which comes highly recommended. All in all the drives from this location is what made it a highlight for us. A lot of these drives would have been far too long with the kids had we left from Honolulu.

As for the property, it's rather large and can accommodate quite the crowd. There's plenty of bathrooms as well. The kitchen is fairly well stocked but, could use a blender for some delicious Hawaiian smoothies. It's set on a gorgeous piece of property with moutain views of the back deck and ocean views of the front deck. The grounds are very well maintained and sit on a farm. A few things to be noted would be the driveway, gecko friends, and cleanliness.

The driveway is RIGHT before a sharp bend, so getting out is a little hard. Walking across the road with the kids is also a small concern. My kids are small enough that I was always with them. However if they were a little older and more independent, I would advise that an adult supervised the street crossing.

Geckos do live in living room. We loved it and thought it was fun for the kids. They are harmless and run away at the site of any person including my 1 year old daughter. However they do poop and leave it in the living/dinning room.

Cleanliness is a small issue. My wife and I like things quite clean. This place is good but not great. There is a little gecko poop that comes up as mentioned before. The coffee filters were not cleaned and were moldy. Just general dust and build up from an older build. The place could us a little love and care as well. There's paint the is peeling from the walls in the living room. The screen doors work as the see fit. The back set of stairs is blocked off which makes me concerned about the front set (however there is nothing wrong with the front set). The shower in the guest bedroom is very touchy with water temperatures.

Every place comes with it's ups and downs. There was A LOT more ups than downs. We really enjoyed our stay and it would recommend it.

Best Vacation House

  • 5 of 5

Enjoyed our stay in the Punaluu Getaway immensely! The views from the lanai, that wrapped around the whole house, were spectacular! Plenty of clean space for the 8 people in our party. We used this home during our son's wedding and it made our trip even that much more special. Three full bedrooms with plenty of closet space. The master suite had king size bed and day bed at the foot of the bed (that a child could sleep on), a sliding glass door to lanai, walk in closet, separate large shower/toilet room with vanities outside near closet. The other 2 rooms were large with queen size beds and a jack & jill bathroom in between. Extra towels, blankets, and pillows for "couch sleepers". The kitchen was fully stocked with all items we needed to cook any meal. There was even spices and seasonings for meal prep. Large fridge with ice maker and water. The family room and dining room were spacious and plenty of areas to sit. Futon in family room folded out to a full size bed. Lanai had plenty of patio seating. Ceiling fans throughout house to keep air moving on hot days with plenty of windows. Close the doors at night as the bugs like the lights. Laundry room was clean and spacious. That is where we found the beach toys, boogie boards, and snorkel gear. All areas inside and out were clean and maintained shy of some moisture damage due to the humid and rainy environment which is to be expected. Parking under the house was nice to keep cars cool. Beach was across the street at the end of the driveway and a nice walk in the mornings or nights to watch the sunrise or sunset (Our daughter's boyfriend proposed to her on the last night at the beach across the street!). Punaluu is about 45 minutes to Honolulu/Waikiki and 20 minutes to Haleiwa/Waimea/Shark's Cove. Minutes from the Polynesian Cultural Center, BYU Hawaii, Laie Temple, and grocery stores and pharmacy. Plenty of dining choices and beautiful beaches close by. We would return to stay at the Punaluu Getaway immediately and plan on recommending it to all of our friends. Thank you for the wonderful and memorable stay!

Nice place, great location, bugs were a bit much

  • 3 of 5

Let me start out by saying that the house is very nice. It is an excellent location on the North shore, with the beach just across the street. It's great if you want to completely get away and be in a secluded area to yourself. The house is spacious and the rooms are plenty cozy enough.

However, on the first night we stayed there, as soon as it became dark, the house was swarmed by flying termites. Apparently we came during mating season (unbeknownst to us). The termites swarm to light. Instantly we had 200-400 uninvited guests. They were mostly in the rooms with lights, but we also found them in our bedrooms, in which the lights had not been on. Some were even crawling on the bed. We called the manager, an incredibly nice man, who came over right away and helped us out. By the time he got there, we had already killed a good number of them. Apparently they fly in, shed their wings and look for a mate. Once many of them had shed their wings the manager vacuumed them up. He got a good many of them, although we continued to find more during the night. We noticed that there were screens on all the windows, but there were large gaps on many of the screens and that's how they got in. The manager ran home, got duct tape, and we covered up as many of the holes as we could. My wife wouldn't sleep in the bed because she was convinced there were more still in the room (we found a couple in our luggage later).

When the owners were notified that this occurred they seemed very unconcerned. We ended up speaking with them toward the end of the trip and they said it happens, and there's not much you can do about it. I beg to differ. You could cover up the holes and prevent them from coming in. You could warn people that it's mating season and that's a possibility. You could have offered to knock off a night on the price since our entire evening was ruined. It left a bad taste in our mouths for what was otherwise, a nice trip.

Owner's Response: Aloha John, We are sorry about the bug issue. Unfortunately, in these tropical areas about one night a year there is a breeding night for these bugs. They will swarm to any light they can find(inside light, outside light, computer or tv screen, etc), and it looks like they chose the light in the home! We are working to correct the screen problems to prevent this happening to future guests. We glad that other than this you were able to have a good time! We would love to have you again!
