About Helen Alspaugh
Larry & I are both native Miamians who have drifted southwards. This area is more like the place we grew up. We have a grown daughter (24) who lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, whom we love to visit. We are a couple of avid adventures who love traveling and seeing new lands. We've been all around the world but of course, there's no place like home!
Helen Alspaugh purchased this Apartment in 2003
Why Helen Alspaugh chose Homestead
We feel like we live in Paradise, especially when the rest of the country is shivering. There is an acre of land beside ours with palm trees in the view, so sunsets are amazing. We love to sit in the yard watching the show in the sky in the evenings. Sometimes our neighborhood peacock joins us. With enough yard for our 2 little dogs to run in and enough trees for shading, we love the wide open feel of the south facing houses. Most of the trees were planted by us after moving in. Hurricane Andrew destroyed all the trees on this peaceful acre. Slowly but surely, it has turned into the garden atmosphere we envisioned when moving to the property. Our street is quiet and safe, away from the main traffic flow. This was a big change from the city life and traffic we were used to. But it's a great change!

A hidden jewel in the country
To miss an opportunity to kick back and relax in this setting would be a shame. Helen and Larry's property allows you to enjoy quiet time, while not being very far from a more active lifestyle. The Florida keys can be seen within a short days drive. Beaches to the east are also a good day trip. For me, having a place to let my dog Wilson run was the best. The residence has a comfortable feel to it. There is a collection of books to read and puzzles to give your mind a workout. And if you need any help finding more to do, your hosts are quite capable of suggesting places and activities to spend time at. Personally, I`d recommend a stay here without hesitation. Thanks to Helen and Larry for their hospitality.
We enjoyed hosting you, Arnold. And Wilson, too. Bo moped around for a day or two after he left-they had such a good time playing together...Come back anytime and visit again! All the best to you and yours, ~Helen & Larry~
Excellent home base for visiting Everglades and Biscayne National Parks
Overall, we had a great experience renting from Larry and Helen. Communication was excellent, as Larry reached out in advance of our arrival and even sent us a photo of the mailbox to help us find the property very easily. Once we arrived, Larry gave us an orientation to the house and recommendations for the area (places to eat, things to do, etc.). The house was clean and had everything we needed in the way of towels, dishes, tv/internet access, etc. (plus a couple of bonus food/beverage items to help us feel welcome). And then for the rest of the time we stayed, it was easy to come and go as we needed. It was really nice to 'automatically' have access to friendly locals to ask questions about the area and get good recommendations. We would stay here again if we are ever in the area to re-visit!
A country bungalow without the front porch:
- good natured, organized, helpful, and informative landlord
-sizable refrigerator with sizable freezer compartment
-stove, microwave and toaster oven
-kitchen stocked with all utensils
-Keurig coffeemaker (will need coffee creamer & sweetener)
-good mattress on queen bed
-sizable closet space with shelves and adequate hanger supply
-sizable chest of drawers with 5 large drawers
-refrigerator exterior looks unclean with rust and dark splotches
-no TV cable channels: e.g., no CNN, MSNBC, weather channel, etc.
The pros outweigh the cons and I would rent here again, especially if TV is upgraded with cable or satellite channels and a little rust remover is applied to refrigerator exterior.
Thanks for the informative review. The refrigerator is on our "to be replaced" list. Thankfully, the inside is quite nice and functions well.
We will probably not get cable- it's an unnecessary expense-the Netflicks/Hulu & network channels usually give plenty of selection and no one complains. And we have high speed internet, so you can stream whatever you want as well.
Again, it was a pleasure hosting you both and I hope your stay was over all pleasant.
Clean, charming hosts, great area of Dade County
We so enjoyed our stay in Homestead. We were there to visit my wife's relatives, who all lived nearby. This cottage was the perfect home base for that visit. Larry and Helen were great hosts, with thoughtful little touches like the orange juices in the fridge. The place was immaculate and comfortable. And the Redland Agricultural Area where it's located is a wonderful place to explore -- fruit groves and acres of potted palms being grown for shipment. We didn't feel like heading to South Beach or downtown Miami, just a relaxing week in the Old Florida countryside.
Very clean, neat, and quiet. Very relaxing.
The house was clean and neat. There was fresh towels and toiletries. There was lots of extras to help with our stay (beach towels, beach chairs, washer/dryer, beach umbrella, umbrellas, etc.). The owners were very helpful on places to eat and visit. Left us brochures and maps. The owners were helpful with any needs and always available.
All the comforts of home
Larry and Helen are excellent hosts. They were available for any questions and offered suggestions on things to do in the south Florida area. The house was very nice, clean, and had everything we needed. Being able to use the snorkeling gear, ice chests and beach chairs was an added bonus.
If we were traveling to the area again we'd definitely stay there again.
The property is gated and the code for entry will be sent via email 24 hours before your arrival.
