About Shirley Powell

My husband Bruce and I moved to Hanover nearly 40 years ago. We developed the campground in 1985 and with the help of our three children in the early years we have doubled the size from a small 20 site campground to our present 50 sites.

Our family has enjoyed all that the Bethel area has to offer. Our children, and now our grandchildren, have been skiing since a very early age. We have had many sledding and cross country skiing parties on our nearly 100 acres of property over the years and have snowmobiled over miles of trails to which we have easy access.

Shirley Powell purchased this apartment in 1977

Kind of kitchy

  • 3 of 5

We had a nice enough time while spending a weekend skiing at Sunday River. Pots and pans we're rough. Very old. Beds we're old and a little small. Hot tub after skiing made it worth while.Bruce was great and the camp store was convenient.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. As our reviews attest to, most of our guests have enjoyed the warmth of our home and the many antiques we have and use. Because the beds in two of our bedrooms are antiques, they are only full size rather than today’s queen and king size which I indicate in our description. The mattresses however are new and we purchase new linens every season. I appreciate your feedback regarding the pots and pans and will augment the collection of cast iron pans we use with a new set. I am glad you enjoyed our hot tub and convenience store and appreciate your having chosen our property for your ski vacation.

Spacious three bedroom close to Sunday river!

  • 5 of 5

Four friends and I had a great time at Shirley’s place. It was warm and cozy, felt just like we were at grandmas house. The kitchen (apppliances, pots, pans..etc) was a bit outdated but we were able to make food every night! Located conveniently 10 minutes from Sunday river, it was a perfect and affordable place for our long weekend. Shirley and the staff at the campground were very helpful and friendly. Would definitely recommend!

Owner's Response: Thank you Heather for your kind review. We were pleased to host you and your friends for a second time.....only sorry you had to travel in such treacherous weather conditions. I’m happy the skies cleared so that you could get some skiing in. Hope to see you again. Summer is also a great time for people who enjoy the outdoors to visit! Shirley

Very affordable and cozy place. Clean and comfortable.

Although the place is older with considerably outdated appliances, it was spacious and it provided everything you need. Close commute to the mountain, quiet neighborhood and dog friendly. Shirley and her husband were responsive and very accomodating. Thank you!

Awesome spot for the family!

  • 4 of 5

We had a wonderful time here! Everything was as expected, except the space was much bigger than it looked in the online pics. Lots of stuff for the kids to do at the campground, great pool and hot tub, and the location is also a great base for many summer adventures. Shirley was wonderful, and it was really nice to socialize a bit with others at the campground. Overall, highly recommend this rental!

The only reason i didn't give 5 stars was that I felt there was not enough light in many places in the house - luckily I brought along my book light so that I could read, but a few more lighting sources would be a definite upgrade.

The western Maine Mountains in the Bethel area are a Mecca for sports lovers in all seasons. For those who enjoy winter sports, the northeast’s premier ski area, Sunday River, is just six miles from Stony Brook Recreation. There are two additional downhill ski areas less than 20 minutes away: Black Mountain Ski Area in Rumford and Mt. Abram Ski Resort in Greenwood. There are also miles of well groomed cross country skiing trails in four Nordic skiing establishments within the area: The Bethel Inn offers 35 kilometers of groomed trails; Rumford’s Black Mountain grooms 17 kilometers of trails; and Carter’s X-C Center in Bethel provides 55 kilometers. There is direct access from our property to miles of snowmobile trails and several local companies that offer snowmobile rentals and guiding service. Finally, there are two local guide services that provide dog sledding experiences from several hours to several days or weeks.

The spring, summer and fall seasons provide for great biking, hiking and canoeing/kayaking experiences. Sunday River Mountain Bike Park offers 25 trails of lift-serviced terrain that stretches out for over 20 miles. There are miles of hiking trails in the area as well as opportunities to canoe or kayak our area lakes and rivers. Stony Brook Recreation rents canoes and kayaks and offers affordable shuttle service.

There are numerous festivals held on the Bethel Common throughout the summer and fall including the Bethel Art Fair held on the first Saturday of July. The Western Maine Gem and Mineral Show is offered on the second Saturday in July and the Mollyockett Festival and road race is held the third Saturday in July. The area’s Harvest Fest and Chowdah Cook-off is held the third Saturday in September and the Fall Festival and Wife Carrying Contest is held at Sunday River over the Columbus Day weekend. The Bethel Area also hosts the Maine State Triathlon on the second Sunday in August.

There are two regionally and nationally recognized museums in Bethel. The Bethel Historical Society maintains and provides tours in the 1813 Dr. Moses Mason House and the 1821 O’Neil Robinson house throughout the year and on holidays. The soon to fully open Maine Mineral and Gem Museum in Bethel is being built to showcase geological history, display renowned mineral and rock collections, provide educational opportunities for the novice and expert alike, conduct historical and geological research and to create a Maine travel destination for residents and visitors. Its gift store and preview gallery are now open throughout the week.

Finally, the area offers many fine restaurants and pubs to please the pallets of the numerous people who visit the area throughout the year. Additionally, live music and entertainment is provided at many of these venues on weekends and during holiday weeks.
