Named for the marine sanctuary that it sits adjacent to, Hale o Wai Opae's stunning, direct ocean front location will take your breath away. This 2 bedroom, 1 bath elevated home is perched at the edge of the water and when you stay here, the ocean surrounds you and permeates every one of your senses.
Ready to swim? Just walk a couple hundred yards to the Wai Opae Marine Life Conservation District, aka the Kapoho Tidepools, where you will experience some of the best snorkeling that the entire state has to offer. Acres upon acres of volcanically created tidepools wait for you to explore the world beneath the waves. Corals in all shapes, colors and sizes and an astounding variety of tropical fish and sea creatures populate these georthermally heated pools. The old lava acts as a breakwater, protecting the pools from the surf and keeping larger creatures out. This truly is a snorkeler's paradise and swimming here is an experience you will never forget. And you won't find a better spot to enjoy it than Wai Opae Hale!
From the minute you pull into the protected parking area under the house, the ocean embraces you. The smell of the wet, salty air; the rhythmic sound of the surf; and of course the endless azure view - this is ocean front living! Head up the stairs to the home's entrance and you'll find yourself on the large lanai that runs the entire length of the ocean side of the structure. There are loungers, chairs and a small table; all enclosed by a safety rail fronted in plexiglass to take full advantage of the view. You'll spend HOURS out here!
You'll enter into the "great room" - the preferred layout of many homes in the area, which features a large open living space that incorporates the living room, dining area and kitchen. This is the perfect floor plan for spending time together while giving everyone the freedom to do their own thing. There's a futon sofa that folds out to provide additional sleeping space if you need it. The hardwood floor and open beam ceiling add to the open, airy feel and contribute a dramatic touch. A TV with Dish Network satellite service, a dvd player, stereo with CD player, high speed internet and a collection of board and card games round out your entertainment options.
The roomy kitchen provides plenty of counter space. There's an electric range, full sized fridge /freezer, and even a dishwasher. There's a nice compliment of small appliances as well - rice cooker, toaster, blender, microwave. You'll have no trouble whipping up meals here! Just off the kitchen is the laundry room, equipped with a full sized washer and dryer for your convenience.
The spacious, oceanview queen bedroom offers a foam topped mattress, a sitting area, and an armoire, and shares that stunning ocean view. A large window and a sliding glass door that leads to the lanai open up the wall and let in the light and the view. What is better than waking up to an ocean view while you are still in bed?
Opposite the queen bedroom is a second bedroom with a pair of twin beds, a large closet and another large dresser. A full bathroom with tub and shower at the end of the hall completes the accommodations.
Outside, the yard is completely enclosed with a hand built lava rock wall, and there's a driveway gate if you wish to use it. The back corner of the lava rock wall is inlaid with a BBQ pit overlooking the ocean. There's a second small charcoal grill as well. The small outdoor shower gives the option to rinse off after a dip in the ocean.
There's really no place on earth quite like Kapoho. Guests from all over the world have fallen in love with this special, hidden place. It's one of Hawaii's best kept secrets, and Hale Wai Opae is the perfect base from which to experience its magic!

Great place! My family really enjoyed it. Had everything we needed.
We enjoyed our time! Beautiful place to watch the sunrise. Had everything we needed.
Beautifully situated and cozy
This was perfect for us, right on the tide pools for snorkeling fun and views. House was beautifully decorated and stocked, we opened the windows at night and the ocean breeze came in and cooled the house just fine. Only suggestion is a shade for the entry door so the neighbors can't see you 😉
Never went to Hawaii
My husband ended up having emergency surgery less than 24 hours before our scheduled flight. We contacted VRBO and cancelled our reservation, without any refund, including a refund of a cleaning fee which was never used. While we were devastated that our 20th anniversary trip didn't happen, we continued to get reminders about rating our stay, and information about the trip we had cancelled. Lesson learned- get VRBO insurance.
Beautiful house in a wonderful location! We loved walking through the neighborhood, snorkeling in the tidal pools and just sitting on the lanai enjoying the fabulous view. Having the thermal pool at Ahalanui Park just five minutes away was an additional plus.
Amm's group were very good guests and we'd rent to them again anytime.
The beauty of the location is difficult to beat anywhere, the house is well-designed, and it's all clean and well-maintained. The tide pools are full of marine life and interesting in their own right. The house is a 15-20 min drive from the nearest town (Pahoa), but its ambiance and the quality of the experience of living there, negate any inconvenience. We would definitely do this again. It's a special place.
Nice house and view, bed was very uncomfortable
Kitchen needs some bowls to store in, none of the furniture was very comfortable, but it is a rental, so it's not going to be top notch
Mahalo for your feedback, William! We're so sorry you didn't find the house comfortable. It was really threadbare a while back, but the current owner has been making great improvements over the past year. The new tile flooring, big TV and that gorgeous dining room table are just a few examples. We suspect that the upgrades will continue :-) We hope you'll come back and visit again!
Kapoho is a quiet community on the eastern tip of the island. It’s often referred to as “Sunny Kapoho” as it sees only about a third of the rain that falls in Hilo. This neighborhood offers easy access to the water and some of the best snorkeling in the state. The gated Kapoho Beach Lots community features access to Champagne Pond - a large lagoon that is geothermally heated to a luxurious 90+ degrees. Just to the south, Kapoho Vacationland is home to the Wai Opae Tidepools, a protected marine sanctuary filled with tropical fish, coral gardens, and all manner of spectacular sea life. You’ll have a blast exploring along the Red Road – one of the most beautiful drives you’ll ever take. Heading south from Kapoho you’ll find Ahalanui Park, aka Millionaires Pond, a park with a lagoon at the ocean’s edge that is almost Jacuzzi temperature. 5 minutes past there is Isaac Hale Park at Pohoiki Bay the local hot spot for surfing and boogie boarding, and is home to the boat ramp that the lava viewing boats use. Kehena Black Sand Beach is a 15 minute drive. The Kalapana lava viewing area (Pele willing) is 25 minutes away at the end of the Red Road. Eclectic Pahoa Town is 9 miles from Kapoho, with yummy restaurants, fun shopping , and necessities like convenience and grocery stores, banks, gas, etc. Historic Hilo is 45 minutes from Kapoho, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about an hour.
