Ask a questionAbout Janine Bawden
After owning several properties in the Barossa, Matt & Janine moved to Greenock ten years ago & now love residing on the outskirts of town on over an acre of land. Always ones to have a project on the go, the ambitious pair decided that with their two sons growing up, it was time to begin something new. With a keen interest in real estate, Matt stumbled upon The Clyde on Gumtree which led to a two year journey of sacrifice and success to breathe new life into this 1950’s beauty. Matt was born and bred in the Coonawarra and was drawn to the Barossa over 20 years ago for a viticulture role. Passionate about the industry, Matt has overseen vineyards in the Margaret River, Western Australia, & has been instrumental in the development of over 650 hectares of vineyards in the Barossa, Adelaide Hills & Victorian wine regions. Currently, he is Operations Director of Murdock Viticulture, which is based in the Barossa. After living right across regional SA, Janine moved to the Barossa in her final years of schooling & has loved living here ever since. In the past two decades, Janine’s focus has been on raising their gorgeous 2 boys – Calern aged 21 & Alex aged 14. Whilst supporting Matt in his career & raising the boys, she worked in disabilities and nursing. Both Matt & Janine are community minded people – supporting local clubs, volunteering and Janine is a keen member of the Greenock Village Community Association. Together, they have travelled extensively throughout Australia & overseas, both with their children & as a couple. They see the Barossa as a perfect destination & love experiencing first-hand the wine & food culture of the Barossa. Because of this, they have the insights and local knowledge to offer guests an exclusive & extremely memorable accommodation experience. Matt’s wine industry experience & Janine’s nurturing qualities are the perfect blend to offer luxury accommodation in this beautiful region.
Why Janine Bawden chose Greenock
When Matt & Janine purchased The Clyde in early 2017, they were looking to immerse themselves in a new project & wanted to find the perfect property to bring a luxury Barossa Valley B&B to life. Matt loves real estate & they had always renovated together, so can look past the cosmetic features (however bad they are) & see the potential. The Clyde was no different. When they got the keys to this 1950s, one-family home, it was a mass of overgrown garden, collapsing extensions, horsehair plaster ceilings, bathroom tiles tiled over tiles, timber veneer feature walls & an inground pool covered in tin. It’s only now that friends and family tell them that at the time, they couldn’t believe they bought such a place! The Clyde took two years of blood, sweat and tears to turn into the stunning retreat it is today. The pair spent 9 months clearing, demolishing, stripping paint from the original bricks and exposing the beauty of this almost 70-year old home. Matt bought an old 5 tonne tipper truck and Janine lost count after taking 55 loads of trees, rubble, brick, scrap metal, cement & more from the property. They estimate over 250 tonnes were removed! As they stripped the layers off, Matt & Janine grew even more excited about what lay underneath, knowing it was perfect for luxury tourist accommodation. A local draftsman came on board to design a new floor layout and exterior and once the plans were approved, they engaged the services of local builder, who commenced rebuilding the Clyde in the early parts of 2018. From this moment on, Janine was the trades assistant! At each stage of the build, Matt & Janine were the ones to prepare for the next stage by cleaning and prepping. Janine single-handedly prepared & painted the entire exterior & interior of the house. They also took care of the landscaping, interior design & styling & sourcing reclaimed wood for window treatments etc! Matt & Janine have lived & breathed The Clyde & are now incredibly excited to share it with you.
