Overview

About the property

Condo, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-5)

Our condo in Mammoth View Villas is a second home for us and is in a very quiet location set back from the road. Our building has only 4 units in it, two studios below and two studio/loft units above. So there is never anyone walking on top of your head or tromping down the hall in ski boots. The only sound you may hear is the snow sliding off the roof, the birds singing, or the whistling wind.

The condo is a non-smoking studio/loft unit with 2 bathrooms and a beautiful view of the mountains and Crowley Lake. It has a full kitchen with brand new stove, refrigerator, and dishwasher, microwave, wood-burning fireplace, 42" Widescreen TV, VCR, DVD, stereo with a cassette and CD player. Free wi-fi is provided. The condo is quite large, approximately 800 sq. ft.

The living room has a new full size futon (very comfortable) and the loft has a queen-size bed and a full bathroom. There are also two single futons. Note that the loft is completely enclosed to provide total privacy for those sleeping upstairs. The entry level has the living room, fireplace, kitchen, dining area and a full bathroom. The entry level was recently recarpeted.

The living room area can be divided from the rest of the downstairs in order to provide privacy for those sleeping downstairs. There is a heavy accordian divider that can be pulled across to separate the downstairs into 2 rooms. This unit sleeps up to 4 adults, or 3 adults and 2 children.

Wood, linens, towels, and other necessities are supplied. There is also an extensive collection of books and ski magazines for the times when you are not outdoors. The condo is on Lakeview Blvd. and the Blue Line Shuttle bus stops directly in front of the development (in winter). It is a short walk to the new Village where you eat, shop, and enjoy various activities. You can also catch the Gondola up to Canyon Lodge from the Village.

No pets, smoking, or Recreational Vehicles such as campers are allowed. SUVs are fine, of course.

Mammoth Mountain is a fabulous ski area with runs from beginner to expert for everyone to enjoy. It is easily accessible from Los Angeles or Reno. Our condo is a great place to enjoy everything Mammoth has to offer.

Mammoth Mountain is a four season resort. Just because winter has ended doesn't mean there's nothing to do there. On the contrary, the air is clean and fresh, the skies are blue, it's warm and dry during the day, and it cools down nicely at night. When you are tired of the heat and humidity and pollution of wherever you live, book with us for a refreshing change.

You can bicycle on the roads or trails, have your bike transported to the base of the mountain, or take your mountain bike to the top via the Gondola and ride down from there. You can also take a scenic ride to the top of the mountain. At 11,053 ft. it may be cool, so bring a light jacket. There are numerous lakes and streams for swimming, fishing or boating. There are tons of trails for hiking, rock climbing, backpacking, and camping out. There are a number of festivals which take place throughout the summer. You can enjoy golf or tennis at 8,000 ft. You can also visit the hot creeks or take a day trip to Bodie (old authentic ghost town) or Yosemite.

Note that this is a private unit and is not on a Mammoth rental service. Thus we an provide you with lower rates. However, daily maid service is not provided. We provide a mid-stay clean free of charge for stays of 6 or more days.

If you read the reviews, you may notice that a couple of them have spoken of a smoky smell in the condo. This is absolutely no longer a problem.

Let me explain:

We no longer have any smell of smoke. This was something we could not avoid previously, though we made every effort by plugging the vents from downstairs and replacing the carpet.

The truth is that the elderly woman who lived below us was a chain smoker, smoked inside, and the smell sometimes drifted up through the floor.

This woman no longer lives below us. She moved to a hospice in Los Angeles. So you do not need to be concerned at all. We are presently in the condo and the air is clean.

Please note that there are 2 flights of stairs to access the condo. There is also a fairly steep flight of stairs to reach the upstairs bedroom. So unfortunately the condo is not wheelchair accessible.

Come on up!

About Barbara Kelman

We live to ski and ski to live. One of the reasons we moved to the Los Angeles area was the ability, in many years, to ski through Memorial Day or later. This season is about the 3rd chance we have had to ski after July 4 (into August!!!).

Mammoth is one of the best ski mountains in the country, and the closest to Los Angeles. There is also air service through Los Angeles, Reno, and a growing number of other cities.

Barbara Kelman purchased this condo in 1990

Why Barbara Kelman chose Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth View Villas is unique in that your accommodation is more like a cabin than a hotel room. Each building has 2 or 4 units. It is also set far back from the road, and is very quiet. We grew up in New York City, so quiet surroundings are very important to us.

In addition, it has a beautiful view of the mountains. The first time we looked at the condo and I walked upstairs to the loft, I said to my husband "This is it!". It was everything we were looking for, plus it had a view that was awesome. On those rare days when we're not skiing, we love to relax by the fire (a genuine wood burning fireplace) and watch the snow covering the trees.

What makes this condo unique

Access to the condo does includes some stairs, providing for a great way to get acclimated to the altitude before you ski.

Fabulous stay, Barbara was great at communication and the place is perfect for a weekend getaway.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed the hot tub in the main building, we were usually the only people in it!

Thank you for a lovely stay.

nice enough

  • 4 of 5

The condo was in good shape, but it's nothing fancy. Great location with easy walking access to The Village and The Woods (Sam's Wood Site). Barbara was kind enough to tell us to bring an extra fan to deal with the summer heat, but the upstairs windows need screens. There was only one nightstand and lamp next to the comfortable enough bed, yet there were two of us. With multiple networks and a long, complicated password, we weren't able to get the wifi to work, but it wasn't important enough to us to pursue. We didn't cook much, but the kitchen met our needs. We had a great time in Mammoth Lakes and the condo served well as home base.

Owner's Response: Thanks, Hershcel, for your visit and for your review. I agree that we do need screens on the upstairs windows. As Mammoth has grown in warm weather popularity, we realize that we have to make some changes to accommodate our increasing number of summer guests. We recently repaired our downstairs screen and are looking at installing screens on the upstairs windows. That project should be complete by next summer. We recently brought up a fan for use on either level, and will probably add a second fan the next time we visit. We also have portable heaters for our winter guests. On a lighter note, we recently purchased an electric fly swatter for use at home, and we may bring it up to Mammoth if we come up again this summer. I highly recommend it. As to a nightstand on the other side of the bed, I would like one there also as that's "my side". However, I have yet to find a nightstand that will fit well into that space. I generally use the nearby dresser, which also has a lamp, as my nightstand. We leave several night lights in the hall closets, and our guests may put one anywhere if they need a bit of illumination in the middle of the night.

Good value

  • 3 of 5

The property is clean and worth the price. I can definitely say the stairs are not safe for young kids or individuals with disabilities or issues with balance. Good value though for a young couple looking for a getaway!

Owner's Response: The stairway is safe and very stable. However, as always, children do need some additional supervision in an unfamiliar environment. I have had guests from babies to toddlers to skiers in their 80s. However, you should keep in mind that there are 2 flights of stairs to access the condo, and there is a 3rd fairly steep staircase to reach the upstairs bedroom. You should also keep in mind that Mammoth is a high alpine environment. The altitude may make it unsuitable for some vacationers. Thanks, Rob, for pointing that out.

Great location

  • 5 of 5

Overall great stay. Great location. Was able to walk to the village or take the bus. Very convenient. Was clean and warm. Bed and futons were comfortable. We didn't use the kitchen at all but it looked clean and had all the essentials if you wanted to cook. Would recommend. Thanks!

Loved staying at this villa. It was walking distance to the village and very reasonably priced. The owners were helpful and understanding. I would stay there again for sure.

Perfect long weekend getaway!

  • 5 of 5

It was a little difficult finding the place when we arrived at night since it is sort of combined with the Canyon racquet club - the directions were a little too vague and a map of Mammoth View Villas would have been helpful. BUT once we got in and settled, it was an awesome weekend! Location is SUPER convenient for both the village and the mountain. Price was super affordable (especially if you're going with two couples or 4 people). Photos are accurate, but make sure you look at the ones with the more recent dates - I would remove to old photos :)

Fire place was great, heating units were solid (the heat literally rises up into the bedroom even on the lowest temp setting - it got so warm we had to open the windows upstairs).

Kitchen was perfect for making breakfast, coffee and small dinners. Internet was great, able to do a little work with strong connection.

I'd definitely recommend this spot.
