About Blair Gifford

I live and work in the Denver area but fell in love with the Salida/Poncha Springs community when my kids were little. My family bought a weekend get away house in nearby Howard in the late '90s, and just added another get away: the Crossroads Log Cabin. For years we have enjoyed everything about this beautiful, warm, friendly, moderately-priced and fun mountain community. It is no wonder to me why tourism to the area has been increasing quickly. I look forward to sharing our mountain get-away with you.

Why Blair Gifford chose South Central

I love the history of the Poncha Springs town and Salida area. Indeed, Poncha Springs is truly a crossroads of western lore. The area has a strong Spanish influence and was the home for the Ute Indians for many centuries. The Utes and their chieftains, Shavano and Caloraw, made use of the nearby hot springs and discovered their healing powers.

In 1806, President Thomas Jefferson sent Zebulon Pike to explore the southern portion of the Louisiana Purchase. (Lewis and Clark were busy exploring the NW territories at the same time.) Lt. Colonel Pike camped about a 1/2 mile down the road from Crossroads Log Cabin on Christmas Day 1806 and purportedly took some time to relax in the nearby Poncha hot springs.

Trappers like Kit Carson soon followed (1830s); and, a few years later mineral prospectors started showing up in the area. In 1860, Nate Rich and Bob Hendricks built the first (still standing) cabin in town. John Burnett homesteaded in Poncha Springs in 1865. He was the first Indian Agent for the area and his wife (Menerva) was the first school teacher. They built a cabin to use as an Indian supply post.

The area started to boom in the 1870s. The Jackson Hotel (our next door neighbor) was completed in 1876 and hosted many famous guests (Ulysses Grant, Jesse James, Billy the Kid, Susan B. Anthony, Rudyard Kipling) and a few ghosts. In 1880, Poncha Springs was incorporated with a population of 350, but soon grew to 2000+ people as the railroad arrived. The nearby Poncha Springs school house, which is now the town hall, was completed in 1883. An 1887 fire destroyed almost all of the town's frame buildings, including the 17 flourishing saloons. Luckily, the Jackson Hotel and the school house building survived.

Today, with a population of about 750, Poncha Springs is a delightful community. Both proud of its heritage, and eager for the future! Come to Poncha and stay for a few days at Crossroads cabin and you will see why.

What makes this cabin unique

Here are some things that you can do nearby: ski Monarch, climb a 14er, raft or kayak the Arkansas River, fly fish for wild trout, explore Browns Canyon National Monument, go mountain biking, ride horseback, 4 wheel drive to the top of a mountain, create or sight see art at the 15 or so galleries in Salida, visit a nearby brew pub or winery, snowmobile to a ghost town, soak in a Colorado hot spring, play golf or tennis, and go hunting.

Perfect for our big family!

  • 5 of 5

Crossroads was perfect for our family of 6! We came to ski at Monarch and coming home in the evening to Crossroads was exactly what we needed - plenty of space to spread out and relax! Everything about it was comfortable and extremely clean. I've stayed in quite a few rentals like this but this one was by far the most complete - we had everything we needed and never had to run to the store for something like dish soap or a sponge.

Winter or summer adventures home base

  • 5 of 5

Charming, clean, and very nicely appointed. Would be great for a summertime adventure base camp for 14ers, kayaking, mountain biking, and hiking. Tons of trails nearby and Salida is an awesome little town. We stayed in the winter and there are snowshoe and Nordic trails with Monarch close by.
