In the Foothills of NC, this unique home has three bedrooms, two full baths and a cozy loft with a queen sofa bed. This is a very comfortable and well equipped home. It sits on almost fifty acres of quiet, private land, surrounded by forests; the setting will give you the privacy and quiet you crave. The view from the front porch is of the South Mountain State Park, a great place to sit and rock for awhile. There is no light pollution and on clear nights you can easily see the Milky Way without a telescope. You may want to pack one though. Asheville is only 50 miles, and makes a terrific day trip as does Black Mountain, the Blue Ridge Parkway and Morganton, NC. For horse lovers and spectators the new Tryon International Equestrian Center (TIEC) is only about 30 minutes away. Only one hour and fifteen minutes from Charlotte, this home makes a perfect weekend retreat from city life.
There is a land line for receiving calls and making local calls to include 911 service. Cell phone coverage depends on your carrier. Options are to use popular phone apps for calls. The beauty of it is being able to unplug!
Located higher up on the property is a very cool modern Studio Apartment with panoramic views, kitchen and full bath. This unit sleeps two adults with a Queen size fold down "Murphy" bed. It works well for larger groups staying together or just a couple's romantic getaway. Sunset toasts and morning coffee are favorite activities on the deck. Inquire about The Studio Apt if addition extra space is needed for your family or friends...
Guests will have complete access to the house as well as the surrounding grounds and yard of 7 acres. There is an old road going up the mountain behind the home
for a beautiful walk. We are located at the top of Listenberry Mtn, NC. There is a yard swing & fire pit for nightly bonfires.
Interaction with guests
We generally will be available for assistance on most weekends and are very responsive to your requests for directions, recommendations, etc.
The neighborhood is quiet and the closet neighbor cannot be seen in summer and is partially blocked in winter from hemlock trees. It's private. There is a Studio apt. mentioned above on the property. We try not to book both properties at the same time unless for the same large party. At times we may be in the Studio but can discuss this per your booking. We are east to get along with and communicate well. We strive to make your stay the best experience and meet your expectations for your vacation.
We are 20 miles in all directions from a town, so it's best to plan on groceries before you arrive. However, there is a convenience store about 1 mile away for basics. This is what we love best about the house, it's a true getaway. Day trips are fun in all seasons. Our favorites are Asheville, Morganton & The Blue Ridge Parkway. All are just a short drive. Hiking opportunities abound in the NC Game Lands and South Mtn State Park.
Other things to note
We have a winding half mile driveway that is steep in areas, it's easiest to navigate with a front wheel drive or all wheel drive vehicle. (Especially if you are going to use a rental car--ask for one) The first time up the drive is your biggest adventure, afterward, it becomes second nature.
My husband and I, 4 year old son, sister, and 2 nephews (7 & 11), stayed at Jim and Deb's cabin the week after Christmas. They decorated the cabin adorably for the holidays and the small touches were greatly appreciated. The cabin is super cozy and literally has EVERYTHING you need from a super organized kitchen stocked with every pot, pan, dish, utensil, spice, you can think of to the bathrooms, which were fully stocked with plenty of towels and necessities, as well as the abundant amount of firewood for the firepit outside. They also have a binder full of "how to's" for the cabin, as well as one filled with a ton of information on attractions and the local area. We loved how everything was labeled and easily accessible. You can tell Jim and Deb put a lot of thought and effort into making sure their guests are comfortable and happy. The view was beautiful and there was plenty of outdoor space for the boys to run around and play. It was very quiet and extremely relaxing. Jim and Deb's communication was also amazing. We had a few questions along the way and we never had to wait for a response. We also loved and appreciated how easy the check-in and check-out process was. During our search, we noticed that many cabin rentals required us to clean the cabin for the next guests or drive the trash to the local facility. Who really wants to do that while on vacation? We didn't. Their check-out process couldn't have been easier.
Thanks so much Jim & Deb for allowing us to stay at your amazingly accommodating cabin. We look forward to our next stay.

We rented this cabin for the Christmas holidays to spend time with our family and grandchildren. Every one of our expectations was met and exceeded with this fully loaded property. Jim and Debbie went so far as to put up Christmas decorations that were stunning and set the mood for our three night stay. I fully appreciate the time and energy this took. This rental contributed to a warm and enchanting experience for my family.
Jim and Debbie's place is just beautiful. The space was perfect for our family getaway. The communication was always excellent between the homeowners and myself. They had plenty supplies in the kitchen to make things easy for cooking and baking. Will come back if needed to this house for sure! Thanks
My wife and I stayed in this 3 bedroom 2full bath cabin for 3 and 1/2 months while I worked in Forest City, NC. The owners were gracious, welcoming, and attentive without being intrusive. They were very helpful with our arrival and with questions during our time there. The place is quite modern and spotlessly clean with an ability to use excellent cleaning service every other week at minimal cost. All items in the fully equipped kitchen worked well. The deck off the kitchen has two separate Weber grills, there was wood available for use of the fire pit in front. Views of the surrounding mountains are breathtaking. Sitting on the front porch for morning coffee is an emotional pick up each day. Well worth the cost.
Every detail of this home and property is well-thought out and intended for peace and comfort. From the rocking chairs on the front porch with mountain views to the deck table in the back that makes you feel like you are eating in the middle of the forest. Everything in the home is intuitively organized and immaculately maintained. The result is that you are unhurried and relaxed without thinking about it. We took a short drive to the State Park and hiked up the 80 ft falls and swam in various pools underneath. We also ventured out to a nearby creek and waterfall hike that was completely off the beaten path and was an opportunity to be out in nature away from any semblance of a crowd. The Stikeleathers made me feel like I was a family friend borrowing their house. I would recommend this as a fantastic place to venture that is within 90 minutes from Charlotte.
Our family had a great time at the Mountain House. We were able to get to the home with ease with our GPS and the directions that the owners provided. We were able to relax, laugh, and create some new memories together. The owners were very hospitable and created a warm welcoming environment. The house was very clean and we had so much fun playing with all of the card and board games that were provided for our entertainment. We enjoyed sitting on the porch in the rocking chairs and looking at the great view of South Mountain. We had fun making waffles with the waffle griddle and homemade ice cream with the ice cream maker that would put most ice cream companies out of business. The house was well stocked with lots of spices, pots and pans, and beautiful enamelware that we were able to use to prepare meals. The garden next to the home was a welcomed surprise and produced some great sides to our meals. Our teenage sons had fun playing their video games with the surround sound entertainment system. We were able to watch movies using ROKU and use our computers to watch movies individually. The cell service was spotty for some family members but they were able to use facetime or Facebook to make calls with ease. The owners also told us about this in advance so that we were prepared. We were able to drive into town for some fun shopping and ate at one of the local restaurants. We went on a hike near the home two days in a row that lead to quite the adventure (especially, for those who were out of shape). We also picked wild blackberries along the roadway that reminded us of some of our childhood memories. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning again to the Mountain House.
We would give our stay ten stars if we could and we would definitely recommend this home to others.
