About Laurie Ingalls, Faye Wardrop

About Us: Your hosts at Ultimate BnB are Faye Wardrop and Laurie Ingalls. It took nearly 40 years for us to find each other; another 3 years to ‘test the waters’ before taking the plunge. We married on July 15th, 1995 at Sooke Harbour House, a lovely seaside resort just down the road from our current home.

Putting together our Ultimate BnB has been a labour of love. For us, it has been one of those ‘someday’ projects…one we were never quite certain we would actually get to do.

Faye: “I come from a business background but my interests include music, food, gardening and travel. In the mid to late 80’s I was the GM at an import/export wholesaler in Winnipeg MB. It was an exciting time for me because we were among the first companies in Canada to develop trade with China and other countries in the Asian Pacific region.

In the late 90's Laurie and I operated 2 gift shops that anchored either end of the Victoria Conference Centre in a perfect location right next to the famous Empress Hotel. We loved meeting people from around the world and many came back to visit us year after year. I must have made an impression because I was nominated for the City of Victoria’s hospitality award and won it 2 years running. After the successful sale of that business in the spring of 2002 we took some time for travel before launching our current consulting practice where we fill the CFO(Chief Financial Officer) role for a small group of business clients.”

Laurie: “I share many interests with Faye, but with a twist. I am a former professional musician. I graduated Grant McEwan University in Jazz performance in the 80’s while Faye was learning international trade! Several years back I was fortunate to be part of Victoria’s Jazz-Fest as a member of the George Essihos quartet when we opened for Downbeat magazine’s male vocalist of the year, Kurt Elling at Alix Gooldin Hall. In 2000, we were featured on CBC Radio’s jazz show ‘Hot Air’. Search: djingo379 on YouTube to hear some of my work.

Why Laurie Ingalls, Faye Wardrop chose Vancouver Island

In 2008 it seemed like the world was coming to an end. We watched this vacant lot for months while planning our dream home. Finally, we took the leap! We designed the layout with our architect on a scratch-pad over coffee! Watching our home become a reality was almost surreal. So many decisions; so much to think about! Someday I hope to blog about the experience with pictures and stories: check out 'ultimatebnbdotcom'.

The suite was designed to be separate from our space; we wanted our guest to have privacy! Over the past few years we've worked away at outfitting the suite with the idea of having just one unit for a Bed & Breakfast. During our time working in tourism we enjoyed all the different people we would meet and but we got a real thrill from helping them discover the 'hidden gems' in our area; the places only the locals would know about.

Our hospitality award from the City of Victoria humbled us. That people would take the time to write a letter to the people at City Hall in appreciation was just amazing to us. We always knew we wanted to get back to get back to helping people discover this incredible part of the world.

The views from our property on Hatley Drive are world class; some of the finest you will find anywhere on this planet. Our objective from the 'get-go' was to find a way to share it.

Our proximity to the ocean is great, but the 565 acres of old growth forest is awesome! The resident deer can be seen grazing outside our door almost on a daily basis. We hate the way the little devils keep chewing our flower beds but we wouldn't have it any other way really.

Ultimate BnB on Hatley is more than just a special place, it's an experience. When we travel we so much enjoy the self-catered option for breakfast. We eat what and when we want. We set our own agenda, come and go as we like. If you haven't experienced that as a traveler we highly recommend it. It truly is 'the Ultimate' in vacation freedom and flexibility.

What makes this apartment unique

There are many!

• Value – a comparable hotel suite could run $400 to $600 per night, and in most cases you've still got to buy your own breakfast.

• Views!

• Privacy

• Proximity to Ocean, Forest, Beach, Bird Sanctuary and spectacular natural wonders

• Quiet serenity

• Everything is clean and new

• It’s a fabulous place to stay while visiting family nearby

• Close proximity to shopping (Big Box & Outlet stores), restaurants, golf, hiking, wine tours, and all that Southern Vancouver Island has to offer!

Guestbook comments from the owner

March 2016

This is the most luxurious vacation rental/bed &breakfast we have ever stayed in!

When we heard that our friends Laurie and Faye were adding a rental suite to their executive home, we were excited for them and greatly anticipated our next visit.

The suite is simply stunning - from the spectacular views, exquisite interior decorating and high end appliances, furnishings and outdoor amenities. They have incorporated their warm inviting personalities into the suite with a concern to everything a guest could possibly need.

Not only did we appreciate Faye and Laurie's concern for our challenging dietary needs, their hospitality adds so much to making each stay a magical experience.

When in the Victoria area we highly recommend accommodation at the Ultimate BnB.

Perfection on Vancouver Island

  • 5 of 5

We had returned to Vancouver Island to relax in that beautiful setting, revisit some of the favorite sights and explore the island more than we had been able to do before. This was in a great location just out of Victoria and a wonderful retreat all in itself! The view of the water and of the Victoria skyline across the water was visible and on full display from every room, but with great privacy available too with blinds that closed both ways to match the time of day and personal needs. The bed and linens were wonderfully comfortable. The towels were full and lovely to use and bathroom toiletries were wonderful. Lighting everywhere was great for reading or watching television. The floors have radiant heating for cozy comfort. The bedroom closet is organized and everything in the kitchen was top quality. The place is immaculate and sleek and yet very cozy and inviting. They have a wonderful spa and outdoor seating that takes full advantage of the views. We felt right at home. Finally, we had made some specific requests for breakfast foods and everything was exactly as we had asked and even more that we had expected. During our stay, Laurie and Faye needed to be away and so we had limited interaction with them, but our every need was met. Their care and concern for their guests is evident in all the lovely little touches and the well thought out comforts of home in this wonderful space. We highly recommend this place to anyone wanting to enjoy Victoria, without being in the busy little city, and beautiful Vancouver Island!

An excellent place to stay.

  • 5 of 5

We spent 9 days in this wonderful B and B -loved the flexibility of making our own breakfast using the delicious items provided by our hosts. Everything was first class-comfortable bed and furniture, top of the line appliances and the hot tub added so much to our experience when the weather was damp and cool. Faye and Laurie were responsive, delightful hosts. W recommend it to our friends and family and would return if possible.

Definitely glad we stayed (Feb28-Mar7, 2017). Thank you Laurie & Faye for your great care and consideration of our needs. You met all our requests regarding allergies without complication, which allowed our time to be worry free. The views are super; and, the cleanliness and comfort of our surroundings were excellent, well done. The food you provided was tailored to our likes and your attention to replenish when needed was a blessing to us. We appreciated the beautiful drives and nearby areas for walks. It was so easy to get in and out of Victoria harbour that it was never a concern we were not downtown. We have told a number of people already that your place is definitely a consideration for future visits to Victoria. My husband's favourite of course was the views over Esquimault Harbour and the ships coming in and out. Thanks for the binoculars in the suite. Be well and may God bless your home.

This is one of the best valued accommodations my wife and I have ever stayed at. Everything was perfect. Planning the stay was easy, suite is very large, clean, modern, quiet, and well equipped, including a hot tub with an awesome view. The location and view from the suite and patio area is also exceptional. Faye and Laurie were wonderful hosts and we look forward to returning sometime soon.

Located near a Nationally protected bird-sanctuary as well as a 565 acre old-growth forest (guests rarely leave without numerous sightings of resident deer, their fawns leisurely foraging on the neighbourhood flora), over 2 miles of oceanfront sandy beach, historic Fort Rodd Hill Park, 3 world class golf courses and 2 par 3 courses, shopping/Big Box stores are a 7 minute drive, hiking (East Sooke & Goldstream Parks, Witty’s Lagoon,

Galloping Goose trail) and all that the world famous City of Victoria has to offer is about a 20 minute drive away so long as you’re not travelling during peak periods.

About Victoria:

Victoria has a well-earned reputation as “The City of Gardens”; in April, the cherry blossoms are legendary! It is a safe, friendly city with an abundance of parks and gardens. Victoria is the Capital of British Columbia and the iconic Legislative Building is the crown jewel of the Inner Harbour while the famous Empress Hotel occupies a similar place of prominence a stones-throw away. You’ll find plenty of historic homes, museums, and galleries as well. As a destination city, locals and visitors alike enjoy numerous farmers markets, festivals, and plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities. The water-taxis move people quickly and efficiently around the inner harbour and newcomers enjoy the ‘water-taxi ballet’ on Sundays from mid-May through September. Truly everyone will find something memorable about their stay in Victoria, BC. Of course, one of the best ways to enjoy it is to ‘stay with the locals’; people who have the inside scoop on not just ‘touristy’ attractions but know where the real gems lie, off the beaten track and on the roads less travelled. Here is a brief synopsis of the more ‘touristy’ things to see and do in our fair city. If interested in the ‘roads less travelled’ please talk to us; if we don’t know we’ll do our best to find someone who does.

Our city is made up of several unique and eclectic neighbourhoods. Ultimate BnB is located on the Westshore, 20 minutes from downtown and the Inner Harbour in off-peak traffic; just far enough removed to allow for serenity yet close enough for easy access to all we have on offer. You will find a delightful array of artisan cafes and bakeries along with world-class casual and fine dining restaurants. The Bard & Banker Pub on Government St. features nightly live music, and the licensed and juried buskers are talented and help to liven up a leisurely stroll through Victoria’s eminently walkable downtown core.

There’s something for every taste in Victoria:

For gardeners, a short drive to Abkhazi Garden and Teahouse is sure to delight. Famous for its rhododendrons, tea and light lunches are served overlooking the gardens which are delightful throughout the spring, summer and fall.

Close by at Government House, the grounds at the residence of British Columbia’s Lieutenant Governor are open to the public and feature woodlands, a nursery, cut flower, perennial, vegetable, iris and rose gardens. There is an historic costume museum in the restored Carey Mews and lunch and snacks are served in the Tea Room.

Just a couple of blocks from Government House, Craigdarroch Castle, with self-guided tours, offers four floors of exquisite stained glass windows, intricate woodwork and fabulous Victorian-era furnishings and a venerable peek into our city’s most interesting history.

Near the Castle (about 2 blocks away), the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, is home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Japanese art in Canada, historical collections featuring Canadian and international works, and exceptional contemporary art. New shows are continuously curated and keep visitors and locals alike returning over and over again. As well, you will find a small, but intriguing gift-shop with a chance to pick up something uniquely different from usual tourist fare.

Not far off, Oak Bay Avenue is lined with specialty shops, galleries and restaurants. It famously offers a wee taste of ‘jolly old England’. Enjoy a pint at ‘The Snug’, a meal, or spa treatment at the elegant Oak Bay Beach Hotel. Waterfront dining is a favourite pastime in our city and there are many opportunities to indulge. The famous Marina Restaurant is sure to please. While still in Oak Bay, why not stroll over to nearby Willows Beach with its sand, sun, playground and snack bar for mid-afternoon ice-cream or just a ‘spot of tea’.

Back closer to our city-centre enjoy a leisurely stroll through famous Beacon Hill Park, with a petting zoo, water park and putting green amidst meticulously kept flowers, shrubs, duck ponds, and fountains. A short climb up the hill will offer a stunning vista of the Olympic Mountains providing the back-drop for views of Trial Island, Ogden Point, an array of marine traffic and a distant look at your home away from home, Ultimate BnB on the Westshore.
