About Laurie Ingalls, Faye Wardrop

About Us: Your hosts at Ultimate BnB are Faye Wardrop and Laurie Ingalls. It took nearly 40 years for us to find each other; another 3 years to ‘test the waters’ before taking the plunge. We married on July 15th, 1995 at Sooke Harbour House, a lovely seaside resort just down the road from our current home.

Putting together our Ultimate BnB has been a labour of love. For us, it has been one of those ‘someday’ projects…one we were never quite certain we would actually get to do.

Faye: “I come from a business background but my interests include music, food, gardening and travel. In the mid to late 80’s I was the GM at an import/export wholesaler in Winnipeg MB. It was an exciting time for me because we were among the first companies in Canada to develop trade with China and other countries in the Asian Pacific region.

In the late 90's Laurie and I operated 2 gift shops that anchored either end of the Victoria Conference Centre in a perfect location right next to the famous Empress Hotel. We loved meeting people from around the world and many came back to visit us year after year. I must have made an impression because I was nominated for the City of Victoria’s hospitality award and won it 2 years running. After the successful sale of that business in the spring of 2002 we took some time for travel before launching our current consulting practice where we fill the CFO(Chief Financial Officer) role for a small group of business clients.”

Laurie: “I share many interests with Faye, but with a twist. I am a former professional musician. I graduated Grant McEwan University in Jazz performance in the 80’s while Faye was learning international trade! Several years back I was fortunate to be part of Victoria’s Jazz-Fest as a member of the George Essihos quartet when we opened for Downbeat magazine’s male vocalist of the year, Kurt Elling at Alix Gooldin Hall. In 2000, we were featured on CBC Radio’s jazz show ‘Hot Air’. Search: djingo379 on YouTube to hear some of my work.

Why Laurie Ingalls, Faye Wardrop chose Victoria

In 2008 it seemed like the world was coming to an end. We watched this vacant lot for months while planning our dream home. Finally, we took the leap! We designed the layout with our architect on a scratch-pad over coffee! Watching our home become a reality was almost surreal. So many decisions; so much to think about! Someday I hope to blog about the experience with pictures and stories: check out 'ultimatebnbdotcom'.

The suite was designed to be separate from our space; we wanted our guest to have privacy! Over the past few years we've worked away at outfitting the suite with the idea of having just one unit for a Bed & Breakfast. During our time working in tourism we enjoyed all the different people we would meet and but we got a real thrill from helping them discover the 'hidden gems' in our area; the places only the locals would know about.

Our hospitality award from the City of Victoria humbled us. That people would take the time to write a letter to the people at City Hall in appreciation was just amazing to us. We always knew we wanted to get back to get back to helping people discover this incredible part of the world.

The views from our property on Hatley Drive are world class; some of the finest you will find anywhere on this planet. Our objective from the 'get-go' was to find a way to share it.

Our proximity to the ocean is great, but the 565 acres of old growth forest is awesome! The resident deer can be seen grazing outside our door almost on a daily basis. We hate the way the little devils keep chewing our flower beds but we wouldn't have it any other way really.

Ultimate BnB on Hatley is more than just a special place, it's an experience. When we travel we so much enjoy the self-catered option for breakfast. We eat what and when we want. We set our own agenda, come and go as we like. If you haven't experienced that as a traveler we highly recommend it. It truly is 'the Ultimate' in vacation freedom and flexibility.

What makes this apartment unique

There are many!

• Value – a comparable hotel suite could run $400 to $600 per night, and in most cases you've still got to buy your own breakfast.

• Views!

• Privacy

• Proximity to Ocean, Forest, Beach, Bird Sanctuary and spectacular natural wonders

• Quiet serenity

• Everything is clean and new

• It’s a fabulous place to stay while visiting family nearby

• Close proximity to shopping (Big Box & Outlet stores), restaurants, golf, hiking, wine tours, and all that Southern Vancouver Island has to offer!

Guestbook comments from the owner

March 2016

This is the most luxurious vacation rental/bed &breakfast we have ever stayed in!

When we heard that our friends Laurie and Faye were adding a rental suite to their executive home, we were excited for them and greatly anticipated our next visit.

The suite is simply stunning - from the spectacular views, exquisite interior decorating and high end appliances, furnishings and outdoor amenities. They have incorporated their warm inviting personalities into the suite with a concern to everything a guest could possibly need.

Not only did we appreciate Faye and Laurie's concern for our challenging dietary needs, their hospitality adds so much to making each stay a magical experience.

When in the Victoria area we highly recommend accommodation at the Ultimate BnB.

Not Enough Stars...

  • 5 of 5

We've traveled more than a little & have clear favorites that we remember in the course of our ventures.

This wonderful sanctuary is without a doubt one of them.

We were left wanting for nothing.

The owners - Laurie & Faye have thought of everything.

And the quality of everything was exceptional - right down to the teas & jam.

We felt spoiled - views every day & all day.

From incredible sunrises over Victoria to constellations @ night.

Cruise ships entering the harbor during the week & colorful sailboats on the weekend.

And as many have mentioned before - even from the private hot tub.

Then there's the calming serenity of being @ the higher elevation & away from the crowds - yet when ready to venture out - a short drive to Sooke Harbour or Victoria proper (and many more points of interest nearby).

Or a short walk to hiking trails, the lagoon or the sea.

So - aside from the night time skies - there are not enough stars offered to rate this Ultimate B & B.

So we'll settle for 5+++.

Owner's Response: Re: Not Enough Stars: Hi Peter & Susan, There is not enough gratitude in a simple "Thank-You" for this lovely review. The fact that you took time, without any prompting, to write about your experience is so thoughtful of you. Not that we're surprised: your thoughtfulness showed up in many ways. So glad you had a safe trip home and we very much hope things work out so that you can return. Warm wishes! Laurie & Faye

Five star heaven

  • 5 of 5

If you want to stay in luxury accommodation on Vancouver Island I would book this in a heartbeat. We have stayed in lots of apartments around the world and this is one of the highest quality apartments we have stayed in and has the bonus of a fantastic view. The hosts are caring without being intrusive and the breakfast provisions were delicious.

The hot tub was a nice touch looking out over the bay and there were lots of nice touches eg picnic set, lovely shampoo and bubble bath. I know it seems trivial but out of all the places we have stayed this was the only one where we have been provided with quality knives.

You do need a car but within a short distance you can be at a lighthouse, Hatley Castle with gorgeous gardens or by the sea or a beautiful lake.

The booking process was v smooth.

A beautiful home away from home

Every aspect of our stay was perfect: location, space and furnishings, breakfast supplies, cleanliness, hot tub and comfortable bed...and we can go on and on. Many thanks to our host Laurie.

Owner's Response: Hi Steven & Nancy, The pleasure was ours. Your obvious concern for looking after the place, both in communications prior to arrival and at check-in did not go unnoticed. The icing on the cake was when we saw how immaculate the place was upon your departure. We couldn't have asked for more caring, thoughtful guests. Please come again when you can! Laurie & Faye

Royal Roads Residency

  • 5 of 5

I stayed here for three weeks during my final RRU MBA residency. I have to say, this place was perfect for students. Not too far from the university by car (5 to 10 min), has a big desk, and a dining room table to work on. Wifi works great. I had a car. I walked to the university a couple of times. It takes about 30 to 45 minutes depending on your speed. During the rainy season you may need boots to get through the trail as it is not paved all the way. I tend to dress up for class and found I was too sweaty (and out of shape) to walk, but I absolutely could have. Although this place is on a big hill so be prepared for the last 500 meters walk. Laurie and Faye are awesome hosts, and it was very quiet and serene. It was also nice to relax in the hot tub between papers. I wish I had stayed here during my first residency, but my wife and I will be back for vacation. All the little things are taken care of - the local soap and beauty products, and the local coffee and tea are great. The bed is comfortable, and the bathroom is fantastic. All around great place to be and you couldn't ask for a better view.

Located near a Nationally protected bird-sanctuary as well as a 565 acre old-growth forest (guests rarely leave without numerous sightings of resident deer, their fawns leisurely foraging on the neighbourhood flora), over 2 miles of oceanfront sandy beach, historic Fort Rodd Hill Park, 3 world class golf courses and 2 par 3 courses, shopping/Big Box stores are a 7 minute drive, hiking (East Sooke & Goldstream Parks, Witty’s Lagoon,

Galloping Goose trail) and all that the world famous City of Victoria has to offer is about a 20 minute drive away so long as you’re not travelling during peak periods.

About Victoria:

Victoria has a well-earned reputation as “The City of Gardens”; in April, the cherry blossoms are legendary! It is a safe, friendly city with an abundance of parks and gardens. Victoria is the Capital of British Columbia and the iconic Legislative Building is the crown jewel of the Inner Harbour while the famous Empress Hotel occupies a similar place of prominence a stones-throw away. You’ll find plenty of historic homes, museums, and galleries as well. As a destination city, locals and visitors alike enjoy numerous farmers markets, festivals, and plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities. The water-taxis move people quickly and efficiently around the inner harbour and newcomers enjoy the ‘water-taxi ballet’ on Sundays from mid-May through September. Truly everyone will find something memorable about their stay in Victoria, BC. Of course, one of the best ways to enjoy it is to ‘stay with the locals’; people who have the inside scoop on not just ‘touristy’ attractions but know where the real gems lie, off the beaten track and on the roads less travelled. Here is a brief synopsis of the more ‘touristy’ things to see and do in our fair city. If interested in the ‘roads less travelled’ please talk to us; if we don’t know we’ll do our best to find someone who does.

Our city is made up of several unique and eclectic neighbourhoods. Ultimate BnB is located on the Westshore, 20 minutes from downtown and the Inner Harbour in off-peak traffic; just far enough removed to allow for serenity yet close enough for easy access to all we have on offer. You will find a delightful array of artisan cafes and bakeries along with world-class casual and fine dining restaurants. The Bard & Banker Pub on Government St. features nightly live music, and the licensed and juried buskers are talented and help to liven up a leisurely stroll through Victoria’s eminently walkable downtown core.

There’s something for every taste in Victoria:

For gardeners, a short drive to Abkhazi Garden and Teahouse is sure to delight. Famous for its rhododendrons, tea and light lunches are served overlooking the gardens which are delightful throughout the spring, summer and fall.

Close by at Government House, the grounds at the residence of British Columbia’s Lieutenant Governor are open to the public and feature woodlands, a nursery, cut flower, perennial, vegetable, iris and rose gardens. There is an historic costume museum in the restored Carey Mews and lunch and snacks are served in the Tea Room.

Just a couple of blocks from Government House, Craigdarroch Castle, with self-guided tours, offers four floors of exquisite stained glass windows, intricate woodwork and fabulous Victorian-era furnishings and a venerable peek into our city’s most interesting history.

Near the Castle (about 2 blocks away), the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, is home to one of the most comprehensive collections of Japanese art in Canada, historical collections featuring Canadian and international works, and exceptional contemporary art. New shows are continuously curated and keep visitors and locals alike returning over and over again. As well, you will find a small, but intriguing gift-shop with a chance to pick up something uniquely different from usual tourist fare.

Not far off, Oak Bay Avenue is lined with specialty shops, galleries and restaurants. It famously offers a wee taste of ‘jolly old England’. Enjoy a pint at ‘The Snug’, a meal, or spa treatment at the elegant Oak Bay Beach Hotel. Waterfront dining is a favourite pastime in our city and there are many opportunities to indulge. The famous Marina Restaurant is sure to please. While still in Oak Bay, why not stroll over to nearby Willows Beach with its sand, sun, playground and snack bar for mid-afternoon ice-cream or just a ‘spot of tea’.

Back closer to our city-centre enjoy a leisurely stroll through famous Beacon Hill Park, with a petting zoo, water park and putting green amidst meticulously kept flowers, shrubs, duck ponds, and fountains. A short climb up the hill will offer a stunning vista of the Olympic Mountains providing the back-drop for views of Trial Island, Ogden Point, an array of marine traffic and a distant look at your home away from home, Ultimate BnB on the Westshore.
