We selected this unit for its views, amenities, and proximity to town. We furnished it for ourselves and our guests to enjoy all the comforts of home, including a kitchen where serious foodies can cook the way we do at home. Watch whales, ships, and transport planes come and go from a lanai furnished for comfort with a northeasterly panoramic view from Banyan Drive to downtown Hilo. Live in the Hawaii the locals remember where there is a real town and "Mahalo" still means something.

About Terry Wechsler and Randy Frank
When Randy retired from the Army Medical Corps to practice in the private sector, he and Terry chose to raise their children in the Pacific Northwest where their sons thrived, but the long rainy winters eventually took their toll. When the boys were settled in their lives, Randy and Terry began escaping to the Big Island mid-winter to see the sun, but it didn't take long to realize Hilo had the tropical landscape and feel of the old Hawaiian plantation days.
Terry Wechsler and Randy Frank purchased this Condo in 2015
Why Terry Wechsler and Randy Frank chose Hilo
After looking at homes and condos everywhere else for months, we discovered Bayshore Towers and found the ideal situation for all our needs. With 2 bathrooms, an updated floorplan with new kitchen, a swimming pool, and on-site laundry, we have all the conveniences we required. Add to that the fact that we can walk to town, and reach all the prime beaches and locations in and immediately adjacent to Hilo -- by bike or vehicle -- and we knew this was where we wanted to be.
What makes this Condo unique
This seventh floor corner unit has incomparable light and ventilation with "living" views of the Bay. We love watching recreational and commercial vessels coming and going. We furnished this unit for ourselves, with high quality cookware and small appliances; dishes and flatware that are suitable for a dinner party; and furniture and furnishings that are comfortable and tasteful enough to make one feel at home on an extended stay.

A special place
I am a well traveled New Yorker. This is definitely one of the most delightful and best value rentals I have ever enjoyed. The apartment is beautifully decorated with local art, very clean, well stocked, and comfortable and the building is impeccably maintained. We arrived to find a dozen eggs, coffee (caf and decaf), milk, non dairy creamer , and a huge range of cooking basics such as all sorts of condiments, spices , oils and vinegars and gourmet utensils and pots.....and bottle each of red and white wine. I love to cook so it was such a gift to find this kitchen. Instructions are to use what you want and replace it if you use it up. We did. Shop for produce at the Farmers Market or any one of the many groceries in town. .. or eat in one of the many first rate restaurants or “locals” dining experiences. The pool is warm and wonderful .... I went down almost every morning.... a great way to meet the neighbors. Terry, the contact person of the couple who own the apartment , is friendly, sensible, accommodating and helpful. The neighbors are warm and delightful and the location is convenient to so many things for both sunny and rainy days as long as you are willing to drive and explore. The apartment is definitely walkable to Hilo town so go ahead and stop at the Hilo Town Tavern to drink and dance ... no need to drive home. ... just an 8 minute walk..or for an alcohol free evening go to the Awa bar for excellent acoustic music and try a soothing awa. This town is so welcoming and interesting....there is a university with a performing center, a classic old movie theater, nightly music in most bars and restaraunts several good museums and adventure hiking you can even bundle up and ascend Mauna Kea for some stargazing in the snow. Fabulous white sand warm swimming and snorkeling beaches are only an hours drive on the Kona side of the island and the “hot ponds” are only about 30 minutes out of town. One word of caution... the apartment is right on the bay and the sound of surf can be pretty loud. ... as are the frogs that chirp all night , all over the Big Island. ... get used to it, don’t think of it as a reason not to come.
Thank you for taking the time to share your experiences with us and future guests. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay. You guys are world-class travelers. And cooks, by the sounds of it. -- Terry and Randy
Incredible Stay right on the Bay!!
I've stayed in apartments long term all over the world.. From Spain to Mexico and beyond.. This apartment in Hilo, Hawaii was by far my favorite. Terry and Co. had this place prepared for every single possible condition (beach chairs, towels, you name it). The kitchen was impeccable and the view from the balcony.. Well you'll just have to sit there for a few hours every day like I did and admire the rainbows and sea turtles swimming by. I admit, getting used to the sound of the ocean when I went to sleep took a few nights to get comfortable with.. Now I miss it compared to the honking horns of New York City. You couldn't get a better place in Hilo if you tried.. Thanks for everything !
Beautiful Unit with Gorgeous Views!
My girlfriend and I have now stayed here twice, and this place hasn't disappointed one bit. The owners have put together a truly beautiful place with the perfect Hawaii Island feel!
The building itself is great--the high-rise offers a library, a pool, and some of the best views of Hilo Bay that you'll get, all while being within walking distance to downtown Hilo. (You can walk to the Hilo Farmer's Market in about 10 minutes; a real treat!)
As far as the unit goes, it hits exactly what I was looking for in a Hawaii experience. The green out the windows, the sound of the ocean crashing, and the harmony of the birds chirping were all unexpected delights. Comfortable beds and living areas, a "has everything" kitchen with views, and other comforts (internet, gorgeous decor, etc.) really made this feel more like a home. I was almost tempted to stay in the unit the whole time!
Overall, this is a great place to stay, whether for a few days or for a week-plus. The style, comfort, and convenience are exactly what my girlfriend and I were looking for, and we look forward to making another trip back here soon.
So glad you guys could get back, and thank you for the review. I did want to clarify that our reservation policy for the general public is a two-week minimum.
Beauty beyond belief, the ocean at your fingertips
This was our first trip to Hawaii and it couldn't have been more perfect! This condo at Bay Shores was spectacular! You have your own private parking space, the views are breathtaking, You walk through the door and your immediately hit by the soft breeze of the tradewinds and the sound of the ocean, You sit on your private lanai having breakfast seeing the sunrise while watching the sailboats and kayakers pass by,. You will find everything you need to make a gourmet meal in the kitchen, beautifully decorated and as comfortable as home, The location superb! Walking distance to the downtown area where you will find the farmers market, entertainment and local vendors and shopping abound. You are just a short drive from Volcano National Park where you can see an active volcano, minutes away from amazing waterfalls and botanical gardens.. You have onsite laundry, excercise room with sauna and a heated pool, it just doesn't get any better! Our only wish was that we could have stayed longer but work was calling...If we are fortunate enough to return there's no question as to where we would stay! I would give this place a 10 star rating if possible!!
Wow, Tana, we're so happy you had such a great trip.
It was our pleasure being your hosts, and we hope you have the opportunity to return sooner rather than later.

Delightful Hilo Getaway
We were fortunate to spend a week here and it is very difficult to say much new that hasn't been already said in previous reviews about this wonderful place. The location is great with easy access to the wonderful daily farmers market (can you say eating a juicy, ripe pineapple daily!) and the charm of Hilo, which worked much better for us than Kona.
Also close by are many worthwhile tourist stops such as waterfalls and the botanical garderns as well as delightful snorkeling options .
Great views, lovely space and to our ears a delightful mixture of ocean waves and frogs at night.
Given the marvelous fish market in Hilo it was great to have a fully functioning kitchen to cook our "catch of the day". Also a BBQ by the pool was fun to use to cook on also.
Very well appointed with just about anything one could need or want. Bed quite comfortable. Good wifi.
We look forward to visiting again.
Paradise in Hilo
We spent six weeks in this apartment with lovely views of the beach and ringside seat for cruise ships, surfers, fishermen, etc. The outdoor balcony has a side window with access to the kitchen making it very comfortable for dining outdoors. The kitchen is fully equipped. The sink faces the ocean and the open concept layout is very convenient. There is assigned parking but you are located close enough to walk to downtown Hilo. There are falls less than 10 minutes away driving. We truly enjoyed our stay in this beautifully decorated apartment.
