About Martin Holborow
We were usually here to welcome our guests until Margaret became so ill we had to return to our UK house. Our local manager, Ulrike has been with us for a long time and is keeping to the ethos and standards we set up and is available during your stay to help out with questions, etc. Margaret died from her illness in June 2016 and Martin is retiring with Ulrike and her family now taking on the business and continuing the letting of Forsthaus.
Martin Holborow purchased this Apartment in 2008
Why Martin Holborow chose Bayerisch Eisenstein
We chose this location because it is lovely for holidays all year round, with plenty of snow in winter for skiing and walking in the forest and lots of things to do and places to visit in the rest of the year. While this is a holiday area, it is never really busy and crowded.
What makes this Apartment unique
The clean air, spring water, peace and quiet and friendliness of the people are the joys of being in the Bavarian Forest. The National Park is so close to our house, you can almost reach out of the windows and touch the trees. Forsthaus is in a small community on the edge of the village and this is country life as it used to be. The cost of living is lower here than in the UK! There are excellent restaurants in the village and nearby and it is great to be able to walk to them as well as to the station - the hourly train service to and from the village is a real bonus. Bavarian Forest Holidays was set up to provide an award winning* 4 star eco-friendly luxury apartment, in a group of 10 apartments in 4 neighbouring houses, with British owners local English speaking staff. In the largest range of forested mountains in Central Europe, directly on the border with Czech Republic. Spacious, beautifully modernised, vacation apartments in a small, friendly community on the edge of the pretty mountain village of Bayerisch Eisenstein. The Bavarian Forest National Park is on the doorstep, as are village shops, restaurants, buses and trains. Demonstration glassworks, local railway museum and playground also in the village. The location is perfect for a relaxing holiday, walking, skiing and sightseeing in Germany and Czech Republic. Munich, Prague and Passau, UNESCO World Heritage Sites Regensburg and Cesky Krumlow all within easy reach. From the property there is easy access to walking and cycling trails (we have mountain bikes for hire and recommended walks), skiing in winter, tennis and mini-golf. We have table tennis, table football, badminton, DVDs, CDs, books, games and our own small shop with mainly organic products, open 24/7 & guest coffee lounge. Sauna, massage, facials, & small gym. In summer, there are beer and medieval festivals every weekend in the area. We provide a huge file of excursion and restaurant ideas with all of our 'insider' tips and favourite places.

Viel Platz. Sehr gut eingerichtet. Sehr zuvorkommende Vermieterin.
Bavarian Forest Holidays was set up in 2005 by Margaret Leach and Martin Holborow to market our holiday apartments in Bayerish Eisenstein, in the Bavarian Forest.
Unfortunately in 2013, due a serious debilitating and incurable illness affecting Margaret, she and Martin returned to UK.
Ulrike Jungwirt who lives in the village has been our housekeeper and much more since 2008 - as well as keeping the apartments spotless, she helps with the garden and window boxes, looks after the guests now we are away, translates our website etc. into German and helps with our marketing too. Last but not least, she makes delicious cakes for our guest lounge, gives Bavarian cookery courses and provides massages and facials for guests! In 2011 Magda Jichova – became our first employee from across the border. Ulrike speaks good English and helps with meeting and greeting guests and is always happy to answer questions about things to do in the area. Magda's language skills are more limited but improving!
Ulrike is an excellent local manager who has continued to run Bavarian Forest Holidays with the ethos Margaret and Martin developed.
We bought Haus Sterr in Autumn 2004 renovated Haus Sterr Maria the 1st floor apartment which we let from May 2005. Ground floor HS Anton was ready by August 2005. The top floor HS Arber, involved a completely new apartment but ready for Christmas 2005.In mid 2005 we decided we liked it so much we would live here for most of the time!
Holidays in our apartments were so popular that we started looking for another house so we bought the house immediately behind Haus Sterr at auction in August 2006.
The 'new' house, Haus Peter, was totally renovated and 2 more 3 bed apartments were available from Christmas 2006, this time with all ensuite bedrooms. In summer 2007, we had the 2 apartments in Haus Peter and the top floor in Haus Sterr classified by the German Tourism Association and were awarded 5 stars for the HP Regen & HP Sumava & 4 stars for the HS Arber - the first 5 star accommodation in Bayerisch Eisenstein and for miles around. Despite further improvements changes in the rules have resulted in 4 star classification now.
In Spring 2008, we bought another house a few minutes walk from Haus Sterr backing directly onto the Bavarian Forest National Park. Now called Haus Martin, it has 4 one bedroom apartments, 2 on the ground floor and 2 on the first floor. The ground floor was renovated by July and the 1st floor apartments were ready by Christmas 2008 and all 4 were classified 5 stars.
All of the apartments have completely new bathrooms and kitchens, new carpets and curtains and mainly new furniture. We have also kept the original decoration on the staircase of Haus Sterr, including the wall paintings with alpine scenes and the stuffed birds and animals which represent a small museum of forest life in the mid 20th century when the house was built.
Guest facilities include indoor table tennis, table football, sauna & fitness room, large libraries of books, DVDs & CDs, sports equipment, mountain bikes, maps, basic supplies of food, drink & toiletries.
In autumn 2008, we bought our 4th and final property, also in the Hans-Watzlik-Strasse. As well as providing much needed comfortable accommodation for ourselves, we have also been able to bring together many of the facilities which were scattered between the various houses as well as adding function and social rooms for guests and an office for ourselves. Outside there is a sunbathing lawn with a view of the Arber mountain, a children's play area and badminton net and a barbecue area next to the barn, which we can use if it rains! We have given the house its original name: Forsthaus.
In early 2010, we went back to the original 2 apartments and installed an extra shower room in each, additional soundproofing and had the walls and ceilings thoroughly renovated.
From autumn 2010, we started on the round of reclassification which has to be done every 3 years. Each year we identify a number of areas for renovation, replacement and further improvement in the apartments due for re-classification. After a gruelling 2 day course in October and a lengthy application form we were also pleased to receive the news just before Christmas that we had been granted the ServiceQualitaetDeutschland seal of approval and therefore also the European Hospitality seal and we have also achieved Viabono environmental certification.
In 2016 sadly Margaret Leach died from her debillitating illness which among other things had prevented her from working on the apartment websites. Haus Martin has new owners but two of the apartments may still be available. Martin is now able to spend time helping to look after guests after 3 years of caring for Margaret in our UK home.
Our main principles in preparing the apartments for letting were:
That renting a holiday apartment should involve as little compromise as possible
