About Joel and Betsy Salter
The photo above was taken at Beacon Rock state park. One of the reasons we live in the Portland, OR is to have easy access to the Columbia River Gorge, Mt. Hood, the Willamette and Columbia Rivers and it's only a 2 hour drive to the Oregon coast - well worth a day trip if your time is limited!
Joel and Betsy Salter purchased this Apartment in 2004
Why Joel and Betsy Salter chose North Tabor
When I first moved to Portland I stopped at the Horse Brass pub. I liked it so much that I looked for a house in the neighborhood. The tuck under two car garage was a bonus. Also, very convenient to downtown or for heading up the Columbia Gorge for a day hike. Or if you're flying in the MAX train will deliver you to the 60th street station and it is an easy walk or short taxi ride to the house. There are two grocery stores near by for all your food needs, There are a couple of coffee shops and many restaurants within walking distance. If you like to bike there are dedicated bike routes to downtown and anywhere else you would like to go. I bike commute to work, and that was another reason for buying the house in this neighborhood.

Great neighborhood, comfortable unit, good price
This basement apartment was just as advertised. Joel was very helpful and a friendly host when I needed it (thanks for the bike route maps!), and gave me total privacy the rest of my stay. The remodeled shower had good pressure and got very hot! The Mt Tabor neighborhood is wonderful for fans of old Craftsman architecture, and the local cafes, pubs and restaurants were close and plentiful. I'll stay here again!
Clean and quiet. Lovely residential area. Close to grocery and train.
The apartment is comfortable with a good bed, adequate bathroom and small kitchen and larger living area. There is a separate entrance with an automatic light which is nice. The entrance is a squeeze. The apartment is fairly dark but has a lovely gas fireplace. Bring your own good coffee. Some spices are provided. Betsy and Joel are pleasant to communicate with. They are flexible also to fit your needs.
We can provide access to the apartment through our garage if you have a lot of luggage or don't want to use the steps to the separate entrance. We are happy to make this arrangement for our guests upon request.
Great location, easy access to all Portland has to offer.
The basement space was great. The bedroom was roomy and the bed was very comfortable. The living room/kitchenette area was very inviting. The full fridge was handy for our leftovers and breakfast items we had purchased for the week. We especially enjoyed the fireplace at nights as it was unseasonably cool during our visit. The bathroom was nicely updated although a little cramped at times. This location was close to the bus and Max lines and was an easy drive for us to many places that we visited during the week. They have a dog and cat and the dog barks a lot when the hosts are gone. We had one night we were back in the apartment early (8 pm) and the dog barked off and on for the next couple hours. You are in the basement so you do hear the activity above you but overall a great place for the value and what we were looking for that week. The host was helpful and very accommodating.
Thank you for alerting us to Max's barking when we are not home. Normally someone will be home with Max and can address his barking right away, however, Betsy was out of town for much of this guest's stay. In the future we will know to put Max in his crate in our bedroom which is on the 2nd floor if we have to leave him home alone. We appreciate feedback that will help us better serve our guests!
Betsy & Joel
The unit is in the basement of the home. 1 bed 1 bath. The unit was clean, and had all the amenities that I needed. The hosts were wonderful people and were quick to resolve any questions I had. I will definitely stay there again when I visit Portland.
Quiet basement apartment in a nice neighborhood
We stayed here in the middle of the summer and the apartment always stayed cool and was very quiet. It had lots of space to spread out and be comfortable with a separate bedroom. The kitchen with a full size fridge, dishes and pots and pans was perfect for preparing meals and storing food. The location was central to Portland and convenient to public transportation and freeways. The bus stop one block away was great to use for getting downtown and avoiding parking problems. We enjoyed exploring Portland and the surrounding areas.
Perfect stay for a couple, and a perfect location.
Kitchen was fully equipped, but with all the great restaurants in the area, there is no reason to cook. Bathroom was clean and the shower had good water pressure. The bedroom was a good size with a very comfortable bed.
I will stay here again on our next trip to Portland.
We're well located for airport access, driving to the gorge, riding on MAX the local light rail system, bus, bike. Near everything you want to be near.
