About Darren and Holly

We are just two people who love being near the ocean and can never get enough of the beach lifestyle. We live a mere 25 minutes away but when we go to the cottage we feel instantly relaxed and stress free. The cottage has been and continues to be a great retreat for us and our Families.

Darren and Holly purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Darren and Holly chose Northwest & Islands

We love the relaxed atmosphere in Birch Bay. When we stay there it really does feel like we are a world away, even though we live less than a half an hour away. We vacation in Birch Bay every summer, and love the fact that the cottage is so close to the Old Candy Store and the beach. On the way to the beach we like to stop in and get an ice cream cone. Or on a morning walk it's great to pick up a coffee and and cinnamon bun and enjoy them in the sunshine.

The bay is also great for kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding and water skiing. The water is calm and is the warmest north of San Francisco and there is very little to no boat traffic.

The clamming is known to be the best in Washington.

The beach is great for walking on and our dogs particularly enjoy it.

We have had many a family get together there, and also had friends join us.

Birch Bay is also perfectly located between Vancouver and Seattle, and with Bellingham, Fairhaven and La Connor not too far away there is plenty to do in the area.

It's a great spot for a summer vacation or a quiet winter getaway.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage is fully equipped, with a washer and dryer, satellite tv, and high speed Wi-Fi. It is very comfortable for a short stay or a longer off season stay.

The deck is full of sun in the afternoon and evenings in the summer, and having a second bathroom is a big bonus for when we have friends or family join us.

We also have RV parking available, and and a fire pit out on the front lawn for fire side chats and s'mores.

Nice Cottage for Family

  • 4 of 5

The cottage was a nice fit for a family of four with two dogs. Darren, the owner, brought us new skillets and a cookie sheet since the others were worn out. He was kind and responsive. The cottage is located close to Birch Bay and is a pretty walk to restaurants and to get exercise. The neighbors were kind and welcoming. The only negatives were we needed more storage for clothing in the smaller bedroom instead of the desk as we were there for two weeks, it needed newer cookware and coffee mugs, and the washing machine needs cleaning as it has a mildew smell. We appreciate a nice stay with kind owners.

Adorable little cottage

  • 5 of 5

This place is great. Went down for a 2 night stay with my mom and sister and we loved this place. We drank wine on the patio and had a comfortable stay. The 3rd bed was a huge bonus. Keep in mind that this place is tight but cozy. The size of the kitchen and living room is more apartment size that house but it was more than enough room for our group. The bedrooms are comfortable and cute, the cottage was clean and cozy. The deck was a highlight for us to sit and enjoy the sun. The owners were wonderful to deal with and response time was quick. I would definitely stay here again.

Great little spot by beach

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time spending over a week at this cottage. The layout is great with a bedroom and bathroom at each end and living areas in the middle. Owner was great with communicating and letting us know how everything works and when we had a small heater malfunction he offered to come and remedy it that night. Close to the bay and a state park great for quick activities outside in the freezing cold and coming back in for a hot cup of coffee. Would love to return when weather is nicer.

Great find!

  • 5 of 5

We love this place! So quiet. A washer/dryer, wifi works great, cable, fully equipped kitchen and two decks! A short walk to several great restaurants and the bay. And Darren was easy to communicate with. You can't go wrong with this home.

Overall OK but needs some improvements.

  • 3 of 5

We stayed here for a week at the end of August. Location is great. Cottage is cute but had a very hard time sleeping on the beds as they are very hard. Maybe a personal preference but it was pretty hard and my husband and I both had sore backs for the entire trip. I wasn't all that impressed with the level of cleanliness. You pay a cleaning fee (which I have no problem doing to ensure a clean rental) but I'm not sure it's put to the best use. Could use a really good deep clean. The washer had mould all around the inside of the front load area. There were ants all in the kitchen which Darren had given us the heads up about by email the day before arrival. They had seen a few the week before so had put out traps but when we came there were definitely more than a few and ant traps were all over but not seeming to help. All that said, it was a nice little getaway and if some improvements were made to the beds and cleanliness we would definitely consider staying again as we come every year for the labour day long weekend. Loved the deck out front to sit and enjoy morning coffee and we had quite a few nights of playing cards out there. Was a fun trip. Thanks Darren!
