Historic Post Hospital on private Casco Bay Island

Bedrooms 10
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

Built in the early 1900's, the refurbished Post Hospital has many original features including high tin ceilings, doors with original room names and numbers and hardwood floors throughout. In the early '90's, a large porch extension was added providing ideal views of Spring Cove and lovely outdoor seating and dinning.

The Post Hospital has three floors each with a full bath. There are 10 bedrooms total. The third floor master bedroom has sweeping views of Spring Cove and Whitehead passage. The house has an abundance of space including a kid’s playroom (ages birth to 8) and a large “ward” room with a pool table. The house lends itself to large groups and comes with a fully equipped kitchen, plenty of large cooking pots, plates and cutlery, 2 fridges/freezers and a gas grill. The house also has a dinning room, a front sitting room and a large laundry area with washer and dryer. While renting, you'll be supplied with basic paper goods, cleaning supplies, all linens and beach towels. There are also several strollers and other baby equipment. The house has easy access to Government dock and its beach. A mooring is available in the cove.

Cushing's Island is a small privately owned island in Casco Bay with extensive carriage roads and walking paths through a picturesque landscape. In the mid 1880’s landscape designer Frederick Law Olmstead and architect John Calvin Stephens, were commissioned to create this summer colony. Trails along the rocky shore and access to the old forts are among the many gems on the island. With no cars, bikes, stores or restaurants, it is a quiet place with a common appreciation for its natural surroundings. Several beaches provide access to water sports including sea kayaking, swimming and stand-up paddle boarding. For those not inclined towards the cold Maine water, beach combing for sea glass and climbing along the rocky coast or visiting our stone gazebos are all ways to enjoy the island.

About Meghan Scribner

The Post Hospital is owned by myself and my three siblings. I live in Portland with my husband and three children and manage the property. We have enjoyed summers on the island and can think of no better place to be than on the coast of Maine.

Meghan Scribner purchased this house in 1972

Why Meghan Scribner chose Portland

The post Hospital was purchased in 1972. Originally designated to be demolished, our father had the wisdom and foresight to see its potential. He and a small handful of folks set about repairs with vision. The problem of how to furnish such a large space was easily solved by the closure of a coastal hotel. Beds, linens, light fixtures and all the wicker furniture came from The Marshall House. This summer house has been a gathering point for family ever since, truly a family treasure.

What makes this house unique

Cushings island has a warm and quiet community. Though it is just a short ferry ride to Portland, it is easy to feel miles away from everything. There is no shortage of beautiful walks, vistas, and beaches.

There is an island truck that will meet each ferry and help move luggage to each home. When getting on the ferry in Portland all bags must be labeled with Post Hospital in order for them to be delivered properly. There is masking tape & sharpies available on the boat. Please do not bring groceries on the ferry in small bags. Banana boxes (available at grocery store) or closed totes are the preferred methods of transporting groceries. On departure day, you can call the care taker to have your bags picked up, the phone # is by the phone in the house, a 2 hour notice is necessary. On the links page there is a map of the island and the Post Hospital & Civilian Dock are pinned. When you arrive on the island, follow the hill up from the dock and take a left at the top. There is a small fork shortly, stay to the right. Continue to follow the road the road. At the intersection of Whithead Ave and Spring cove Ave, bear left. The Post Hospital is almost to the end of the road on the left.

It was a wonderful vacation the weather was great, the peopl on the Cushing island were so friendl!

The post house on the island was big and Beautiful and close to the government dock to take the water taxi into Portland (water taxi are exspensive to use daily)! It’s good to bring you own kayaks!! It a great island to walk jog or run and to relax!!! There are no stores or biking on the island. But there’s great family time together: the kids play baseball in the street, board game, explored the island ( without parents supervision they loved the freedom of the island like the old days and we alll sat down for dinner every night; not something most Americans kids do today!!

A week in heaven!

A perfect place for ages 8 months to 70 years. Going to the beach, jumping off the docks, playing flashlight tag, cooking, playing just ended too quickly!

Thank you for more Cushings memories!
