Most guests visit Rügen between April and October; the main season is between June and August, but also the quiet atmosphere of the winter is appreciated. Binz, Sellin and Göhren as well as Sassnitz as a state-approved resort are the most important resorts for bathing and spa tourism. Rügen's unique natural and cultural landscape attracts tourists who explore the island by bike, on foot or by sailboat. The Störtebeker Festival in Ralswiek has been very popular for several years, as well as classical attractions such as Cape Arkona, the Kreidefelsen, the seaside resort of Prora, the Jagdschloss Granitz or the classicist buildings of Putbus.
The Jasmund National Park is located on the Jasmund peninsula, which includes the Stubnitz beech forest and the famous Rügen chalk cliffs. Directly at the Königsstuhl is the Nationalpark-Zentrum Königsstuhl, which offers information about the national park in an exhibition with Multivisionskino.

Parts of the coasts in the west of Rügen as well as the adjoining Bodden belong to the national park Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft, whose main focus is the peninsulas Darß and Zingst as well as the island Hiddensee.
On Rügen begins also the 2. 500 kilometers long Deutsche Alleenstraße.
Rügen has a signposted cycle path network. The development and the signposting of this cycle path are very different in its individual sections. It ranges from very good in the area of the Baltic Sea baths to deficient in the area between Garz and Zudar. There is a cycle path around the whole island. During the season there are the possibility to take bicycles on the buses. This is basically possible in the railways.
