The coast is heavily fragmented by numerous bays (Bodden or Wieken) and protruding peninsulas and headlands.
Rügen is visited because of its diverse landscape and the long, fine sandy beaches of many tourists.
Rügen is one of the tourist strongholds of Germany. The island records about a quarter of all overnight stays in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Most guests visit Rügen between April and October; The peak season is between June and August, but the quiet winter atmosphere is appreciated. The most important resorts for the bathing and Kurtourismus are Binz, Sellin and Göhren as well as Sassnitz as state recognized resort. Rügen's unique natural and cultural landscape attracts tourists exploring the island by bike, on foot or by sailboat. In addition to the classic sights such as Cape Arkona, the chalk cliffs, seaside resort Prora, hunting lodge Granitz or the classical buildings of Putbus enjoy for some years, the Störtebeker Festival of Ralswiek great popularity.
On the Jasmund peninsula is the Jasmund National Park, which includes the beech forest of Stubnitz, including the famous Rügen chalk cliffs. Directly on the Königsstuhl is the National Park Center Königsstuhl, which offers information about the National Park in an exhibition with multivision cinema.
The chalk is an important tourism and export commodity for complaints. In the wellness area about 70% of the arrangements go back to offers with chalk. In addition, chalk is used in numerous exported wellness products. Because of the great economic importance, it is called the White Gold of Rügen.
Parts of the coasts in the west of Rügen and the adjoining Bodden belong to the Vorpommersche Boddenlandschaft National Park, which focuses on the peninsulas Darß and Zingst and the island of Hiddensee.
On Rügen also begins the total of 2,500 kilometers long German Avenue.
Rügen has a signposted cycle path network. The state of completion and the signposting of this cycle path network are very different in its individual sections. It ranges from very good in the area of the Baltic Sea resorts to poor in the area between Garz and Zudar. There is a bicycle trail around the whole island. During the season, on some routes, there is the option of taking bicycles on the buses. In the railways this is possible in principle.
