About Larry Abbott
Fly fishing is my religion. Rock Creek is my church.
Larry Abbott purchased this Cabin in 2014
Why Larry Abbott chose Philipsburg
I have found no place on earth more peaceful or beautiful than Upper Rock Creek, and this cabin is in one of the very best stretches of the valley. The environment here is totally unspoiled. Grizzly, wolves, mountain lions, moose, elk, deer, eagles, big horn sheep, and 2,000 trout per mile make their homes here. It is common to catch 30 fish on dry flies in a day, and not encounter another angler. Rock Creek's reputation as " arguably the finest trout stream in Montana" is well deserved. Located in hunting district 216, with abundant hunting opportunities in sight of the property.
What makes this Cabin unique
Upon request, guests are provided with a detailed description of the very best "secret spots" on the creek, little known public access points and easements, and specific fly and technique advice, to make your trip a big success.

Plenty of room for a large group.
Our family Christmas was enjoyed by all from a 3 yr old to 75 yr young.
Driving directions were good. The cabin's name isn't marked clearly, especially during the darker days of winter. Everything was prepared and ready for our stay. We prepared dishes ahead and put them from the freezer into the oven but the oven didn't seem to heat as well as expected and it was not as clean as it should be. The pictures on the Internet Web site were accurate. We had a wonderful stay and would come again - we had a red fox walk beside the cabin on its morning hunt and moose along the road on our return home. Some of the family fished, others drove into Philipsburg to visit the stores, and some relaxed with board games. Thank you so much for such good memories.
Thank you for your review. I am glad that your family enjoyed our cabin. I am surprised that the oven did not cook your frozen food as fast as you had expected. The oven was purchased new less than one year ago and we have had no previous complaints. I will have it professionally inspected and repaired if any defects are found.
Great place for our group of anglers
Our group of 8 anglers has been staying here for a number of years. It has everything we need. The bedroom arrangement works well for our group. Recent improvements to the arrangement of the bunk room made it much more comfortable. The kitchen is well supplied with everything you need. Views out the windows and from the deck are magnificent. There are many access points to Rock Creek just a short drive away. As always, the fishing was great. We started planning our 2019 trip before we left.
Travelled to this cabin in the beautiful Rock Creek area to spend a few days with the family. The cabin is located just minutes from the water and the folks at the Clark Ranch were super about giving us access to the stream to fish and to take in the views. The cabin was clean and well maintained with everything we needed and super comfortable. The BBQ was well used and could use some love but the kitchen was stocked with ample cookware and a very nice gas range to cook meals. Sitting on the deck enjoying coffee each morning was pure bliss. The sound of the water , sight of rock cliffs, and the deer walking through the fields encouraged me to get out of bed early each morning.
The cabin is close to P-burg if you want to go spend time at a few neat shops, the brewery, (my favorite) or eat (Bricks Pub). If you rent this cabin be sure to take the drive down Rock Creek Road towards Clinton. What an amazing ride! We saw tons of big game animals, the highlight being the herd of bighorn sheep.
If you are looking at renting this property I would encourage you to do it! You won't be disappointed! We are already looking for an excuse to get back!
Thank you for taking the time to write a review of my cabin. I am glad that you and your family had such an enjoyable time. Thank you also for your feedback on the BBQ. I have already orders a new replacement grills and new heat shields for the BBQ to get it back into shape. Hope to see you again soon!
Great location and beautiful accommodations.
This cabin is wonderful and is an absolutely beautiful location. There was plenty of room for 4 kids and 4 adults (and would have easily accommodated more). We stayed here because all of the VRBOs in Philipsburg were booked and we wanted to ski at Discovery. I was pleasantly surprised that it was pretty close to Disco--an easy drive of less than 45 minutes. It felt like we were away from it all. We will definitely stay here again for a skiing weekend. This place would be awesome anytime of year to fish, ski or hike. Had a very cabiny feel. Loved it!
Real Western Montana
The Rock Creek Cabin is in great shape and the kitchen is well stocked with nice quality pots and pans and all of the tools that you could need. The furnishings are comfortable and in good condition. The large table can easily seat eight people so the entire family or group can sit down together. It's just a hop skip and a jump from one of the premier fly fishing rivers (don't let the name Rock Creek fool you, it's the real deal) in Montana. It was late December and I was able to get to the river and get fish. There was a trailhead within easy walking distance for hikers and cross country skiers. The upper Rock Creek area is the real Western Montana. Once you turn off from the town of Philipsburg, which is worth at least an afternoon, you will see nothing but large ranches that still run cattle and a few cabins along the way. The ranches assure open spaces and great views. We saw three Moose, and a bunch of whitetail deer in the time that we were out running around. I have lived in Montana my entire life and it was refreshing to see Montana the way I remember it as a kid.
In the wintertime it's a great place to get away as there is very little traffic on the road.
Thank you so much for your favorable review. Our little valley is a pristine treasure & I am glad that you found so much to love about it. Hope to have you up there again soon!
Located on Upper Rock Creek Road, at roughly the 36 mile mark, about 20 miles from Philipsburg, and about 90 minutes from Missoula. The fly fishing and natural beauty are incomparable. Excellent snowmobiling, mountain biking, and hiking, in the immediate area surrounding the cabin. Located in hunting district 216, with abundant elk, white tail deer, mule deer, moose, big horn sheep, mountain lion, bear, and more. Some of the best trophy big horn sheep hunting in North America.
