About the property

A Classic Alaska Dry Cabin On The Shores Of Kenai Lake

Our Newest Cabin and it is a treetop adventure! An Alaskan Lakefront cabin located in the heart of the Kenai Peninsula. Off the Grid, No electricity, No cell service, No WiFi. Hand pump well water, propane lights, and wood stove for heat. We offer a Wild and Remote experience! You can't get more "Remote" without hiring a float plane, a water taxi, or walking for 2 hours! But we're just moments from the Seward Highway (a gorgeous National Scenic Byway) and just 19 miles north of Seward. Most likely you won't want to leave, just chill on the HUGE covered deck with the fireplace and steamer chairs, sip your drink, BBQ some steaks, just be....

(We are 4 cabins located on 15 acres at the headwaters of the Kenai River! Check out our other listings! VRBO #707453, #728022, and #790188)

About Jan-Ake Schultz

We moved to Alaska in 2000 and were wonderfully fortunate to acquire this property. After building the cabin and raising Our family here, now is the time to share it with like-minded travelers who will appreciate its unique and magical features

Jan-Ake Schultz purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Jan-Ake Schultz chose Alaska

This is no hotel room. If you sit on the deck and read about Alaska Nellie and the sourdoughs who pioneered this great land you will feel and be a part of the story. The Iditarod National Historic Trail runs along the frozen lakefront in winter......

What makes this cabin unique

History- You will pass the 100 Year old historic cabin on the way in, you will travel the gravel footpaths, you will watch the morning fog burn off the lake, you will witness and hear the flight of sandhill cranes overhead in season

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 loved our stay here. The lake and mountain views from the cabin are beautiful. The lake is very peaceful and perfect for gentle kayaking adventures. We really enjoyed the sauna and then jumping in the lake. The cabin is well equipped, lots of windows for great lighting, plenty of wood ready for use for indoor/outdoor fires and to heat up the sauna. The porch gets great sun for long enjoyment in the summer. The location is perfect for day trips into Seward and hiking in the Chugach National Forest. Magical, peaceful place.

Beautiful Rustic Cabin Near Seward

  • 5 of 5

We loved our experience in the Yakutat cabin. The location, on the edge of Kenai Lake (actually, when we were there just after a major storm, the lake was still under our cabin), is extremely peaceful. When the windows were closed, you couldn’t hear a peep from outside. We liked the design of the cabin, which was very clean cut with large windows all around. The view across the lake is beautiful. The cabin has a deck that wraps around three sides of the cabin and has plenty of seating.

We cooked and ate out on the deck to maximize the experience. The propane grill comes with a handy side burner. The cabin also comes with a small and very large cooler, and we recommend buying ice on the way in. There are a range of pot sizes, cooking utensils, and storage supplies. When we got the hang of it, we appreciated the charm of the wood burning stove which was the only heat source. We heated the cabin up pretty high before we went to bed to keep it warm for a while, but when we woke up the cabin was a bit chilly. Slippers recommended. You’ll need to pump your own water and bring it back to the cabin. A filter is provided to eliminate the heavy iron content. Since it is was very light out, we didn’t have a problem walking out on the boardwalk to get to the outhouse at night, which itself was kept very clean.

To improve this wonderful experience, we would suggest some improvements:

- Provide instructions for wood-burning stove. We’d never used a wood burning stove before nor had our neighbors in the next cabin. The father had to Google instructions when he got to Seward and he passed tips onto us. The open position for the flute was not marked and had to guess to avoid filling the room with smoke

- Provide wood of usable size. Both he and my husband weren’t very adept at splitting wood with an axe and I’m glad no one was hurt in the process. Perhaps the owner could provide wood chopped down to usable size.

- Give instructions for turning on propane lights. We had to go back to the entrance to ask the acting property manager (the Renfro owner), for more detailed instructions on how to turn on the propane lights.

- Mention kayak room lock. The Renfro owner offered that we could use the kayaks, but when we tried to use them before our departure we discovered that they were locked up.

Despite some small glitches, we had a memorable experience and highly recommend this cabin to other travelers.

We had a great time. It was a wonderful adventure for our family. Views are lovely.

Cabin was comfortable, we slept very well. Only negative was my daughter got stung by a wasp by the water pump. We really appreciated the outing on the rowing boat and it was great that you provide life jackets. All in all a great stay and one we will remember for a long time.

This place is great to get away from it all. The attention to detail in the cabins is amazing and the view is incredible. We really enjoyed our time here with fires on the deck and kayaking the lake and end of the day saunas. This really is an incredible place and we will be back very soon.

Great Cabin!

  • 5 of 5

My wife was a bit apprehensive about a no-electric, no-plumbing cabin, but now she can't wait to return. Convenient location for 4th ofJuly festivities in Seward, in an absolutely beautiful setting. The owner took the time to show us around and make sure we knew how to use the amenities. Fantastic views relaxing by the front porch fire pit. Finnish sauna (alternated with dips in FRIGID Kenai Lake) was a godsend after a run up Mt Marathon. Heated (propane) shower worked perfectly. We didn't have a chance to use the kayaks or rowboats, but the lake was placid and inviting each morning. Outhouse was clean, and no problem at all. Wood stove was enjoyable, and even bit too warm for us in the summer. Next time we'll stay a full week!
