The village of Junquillal (Hoon-key-all) remains unspoiled, a haven for those looking to spend their precious leisure time on the road less traveled. The village is home to only about 200 residents. Local Costa Ricans (Ticos) as well as international ex-patriots call this area home. If you’re looking for a laid-back, quiet and authentic setting, you’ll love it here. However, Playa Junquillal is conveniently located 36 km (30 minutes) from Tamarindo if you are seeking nightlife and a lot of action. There are a few other beach towns sprinkled along the way that brings about more entertainment such as Lola’s in Playa Avellenas or yoga at The Peace Retreat in Playa Negra, just a short drive up the coast.
Tierra Pacifica commercial center is located nearby where you will find a grocery store carrying local and fruits and vegetables. In the same plaza you'll find Amigo’s restaurant, the Surf Cafe for breakfast options and a morning latte, a surf shop are just 5 minutes down the road from Punta Paraiso. Our local supermarket can provide just what you need, or for a wider variety you can drive to Tamarindo or Santa Cruz ( all along paved roads) for more options.
Several restaurants are available in the area ranging from typical Costa Rican dishes to French cuisine or take out pizza.
There are many activities that Costa Rica has to offer. You can arrange with our nearby tour companies, horseback rides, surfing, zip lines, jungle river tours, paddle boarding, kayaking hiking, caving, birding, mountain biking, scuba diving, deep sea fishing adventures or turtle nesting tours....or just spend the day relaxing on the beach or at the pool.
Or for the golf enthusiast you will also find Hacienda Pinalla Golf Course (an 18 hole championship course - 7, 296 yard design set on the Gold Coast of Costa Rica). Reflecting respect for its natural setting, the Golf Course at Hacienda Pinilla has earned designation as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary for its preservation of ecological balance. Here you have the extraordinary opportunity to enjoy your game in the natural habitats of Costa Rica, where the surrounding beauty and glimpses of exotic wildlife create a truly special experience and only 15 km-20 minutes from Junquillal.
Junquillal is also home of a communal effort to preserve the Leatherback Turtle and other marine turtles of the Pacific. You can take a walk out front of the house at night and with a bit of luck you may witness the miracle of turtle nesting. From Sept.-March, sea turtles dig their nests into the sand of Junquillal to lay their eggs. Four different species of turtles are present, including the large and severely endangered Leatherback and Ridley sea turtles.
The ocean water/beach quality in Junquillal is excellent. It is so good, in fact, that year after year, the area wins the coveted Blue Ecological Flag, an annual award, which awards effort and volunteer work in the pursuit of conservation and development, in accordance with the protection of natural resources, implementation of actions to address the Climate change, the search for better hygienic sanitary conditions and the improvement of the public health of the inhabitants of Costa Rica and beach cleanliness. It improves the quality of water for human consumption, protection of water resources, and treatment of waste water.
The beaches in Junquillal offer some of the best surf casting fishing experiences that can be had anywhere in the world. There are great surf breaks that encompass the needs of the beginner to the adventurous expert, long board or short board, paddleboard or kayak. To the north of Junquillal beach you will find Playa Blanca, a delightful white sand swimming beach bordered by a rocky outcrop with many tide pools, great for playing or snorkeling, a little bit further you arrive at the world-class surf of Playa Negra. Surfing and stand-up paddle boarding lessons and rentals are readily available for all.
At the southern most end of Junquillal is Punta Paraiso, where the road ends at the estuary of the Rio Nandamojo. A river and lagoon has formed behind the beach and a mangrove forests extends inland. Area kayak tours/ SUP Yoga and paddle boarding are offered so you can venture up the river to admire the intriguing water jungle with its flora and fauna, monkeys, birds and maybe a possible crocodile on a riverbank. Around low tide - 2 hours before and after - you can cross the Rio Nandamojo by foot to the south of Punta Paraiso. A hike along the coast yields a fantasyland of beach wilderness where you can get lost in time collecting shells and taking in the views. The estuary is a favorite place for locals who fish with hand lines and on some weekends you see families having a picnic enjoying Costa Rican 'Pura vida' with a barbecue on the beach or river of freshly caught fish.
