Western Montana Paradise!

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,800 sq. ft.
Property type chateau / country house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

Country House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

This historic 1880's hand hewn log home is the combination of the original homestead house and a barn that were completely renovated by the family in 2002. While the logs & ranch ring with history the facility is first class.

Our third generation, operating ranch includes the North Fork of the Blackfoot River, two spring creeks and four ponds that hold native trout waiting to challenge fishermen. Guests have exclusive access to these waters and the ranch. The storied Blackfoot river is nearby and other rivers are an easy drive. The ranch is located between Montana's two major national parks and the Bob Marshal wilderness is north of the ranch. We are happy to share our bit of heaven as well as generations of stories! Many of our guests just enjoy the peace & quiet of the ranch & it's surroundings. Lots to enjoy besides the fishing!

About Jon & Diane Krutar

My family purchased our ranch in 1949. It has been a love affair ever since. Many small ranches in this area have been purchased for summer trophy ranches. Instead, our family has restored the original homestead home into a vacation rental. We enjoy sharing the home as well as the ranch. Guests have exclusive use of the spring creeks, ponds, & access to the N. Fork of the Blackfoot that runs through the ranch. I am happy to tell guests the history of the valley & our 65 years of toil on the ranch.

Montana at its best

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I stayed four nights at the Homestead cabin during our annual fishing trip to the west. The overall experience was exceptional and a highlight for us. The cabin is something special, from the original timbers and wood harvested on the ranch, all assembled with care and craftsmanship, to the setting and spectacular views. The fishing on the North Fork of the Blackfoot (flowing adjacent to the ranch) was fun with many cutthroats and rainbows, and a few browns; however, the big ones got away. Jon and Diane were wonderful, caring and entertaining hosts, and our stay will always remind me of several stories. Thanks, Diane and Jon, for sharing your Honestead with us. Clay G.

Owner's Response: Thanks Clay. You guys were great guests. Sorry we were dealing with many variables this summer but you guys made it all happen. Also sorry Laddy & I did not make it to Bonner with you. We did enjoy the modern pics though. Hope to see you all again. Still not certain of VRBO/HOMEAWAY merger, but guess everything changes. It is good for some of the big ones to get away. Jon a.k.a. little fish!

Took a risk six years ago, my wife and I found it online and have been back every year since. Each visit, something really special and unexpected happens, which deepens our relationship to the place, our hosts who I now consider friends, and to each other. The house was built out of love and you can feel it when you walk in the door. Yes, there is great fishing, the scenery is literally breath taking, you can bike and float in the pond and wildlife abounds. But what keeps us coming back is being a part of working ranch, I've driven tractors, jumped on hay bales and rode on an ATV chasing errant livestock. All during cocktail hour. It is an amazing wealth of unstructured free time with as little or as much as you want to do. I write this with some inner conflict as I want John and Diane to have lots of guests but I want my week every year!

Worked Perfect for Family Wedding!

  • 5 of 5

My son recently got married near Helmville and we rented the Krutar Ranch for myself, my husband, my niece her husband and their 3 month of son. It is beautiful and worked well for us as we prepared for the wedding. On Saturday the groom and his groomsmen came to get ready and we had a bbq for them on the back deck. They took some pictures outside on the property and near the pond-I am sure they will be awesome. The pictures on this site or good but the property is even more beautiful than captured in the pictures. I would highly recommend this property-the owners were amazing to work with.

Montana Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

Lots to do for everyone! My teenager went paddle boating on the ponds, my grade schooler rode a bike on the property and my spouse enjoyed the views, and the fantastic house. I went fishing--on the ponds, the spring fed creeks, and the Blackfoot River. Only about an hour from Missoula and Helena, you can always go into town if you want to, but we never felt like we should. The mountains are stunning, the stars uber bright, and seeing rainbows only added to the splendor. We cannot wait to go back to enjoy the house and our hosts!

Excellent rental and experience

  • 5 of 5

Can not say enough good things about the Homestead. Great access to fishing on the blackfoot, north fork of the blackfoot, and multiple creeks on the property and nearby. The property is very close to the amazing wilderness complex where you can hike for months without ever hiking the same trail twice. The house is in a wonderful location with great views. The house is modern as far as the appliances and such, but still retains a nice ranch/cabin feel. I highly recommend a visit here.
