Tired of the OBX chaos? Wouldn't it be nice to get home refreshed instead of hot and exhausted? Give Belhaven and River House a try. You will be amazed and so glad you did.

This nearly 2,500' SF residential ranch retreat is set for repeat customers and new friends who seek a week or two of serenity, fun, relaxation and convenience in hospitable, eastern North Carolina. Quiet, quiet, quiet ... did we say QUIET? Located at the end of a beautiful waterfront community in the greater Belhaven area, River House is the best kept secret in the area. Come and enjoy our river home ... whether you want a life lifting spiritual retreat, hunting or fishing memory, yearn to kayak in amazing waters, or just need a well deserved break, River House is waiting for you.

This home was originally designed with a symmetrical floor plan .. each "half" contains a full kitchen and sitting room area with gas fireplace, and each has a bathroom and two BR areas (one now converted to an office). On the northern exposure is a 28 x 16 common area originally designed as a gracious living room and dining room combination. Though still in the planning process we will be converting this expanse to either a TV lounge/rec area or other great options for family/group fun, relaxation and entertainment. The southern exposure with terrific views has a common sitting/dining area in the sun room, all with easy access to the screened porch complete with BBQ grill, rockers, glider and tables.

MAJOR AMENITIES:

West & East Kitchens: Two ( 2) full kitchens, each are well stocked to accommodate up to 8 people total. The kitchens areas have "windows" to the sun room with the great water views make it inviting in their own right. Vacation at River House together or apart or both ... the choice is yours!

Sitting Areas w/Gas Fireplaces: Tied to their respective kitchens, each half of the home has lovely sitting/FP areas to enjoy. So while one is making a snack, small meal or full dinner, a spouse or mate can curl up on the couch to finally have that conversation you promised yourselves for years. Or just sit, breathe, take in the quiet and smile ... life is good at River House.

Bedrooms: 3 BRs with king, queen, double bed sleeps 6 comfortably .. add the pull out sofa for 2 more; all BRs get a lovely sunrise "good morning". K/Q BRs have robes and slippers to keep you comfy. Fair warning - find the inviting king bed and truly get lost in the arms of Morpheus. Sleep for a week? It's possible here.

Sun Room: the common sitting/TV area features a large dining room table (with drop leaf) and cozy couch and chair suite to curl up into. Windows, windows, windows with glass doors just say "come on in, bathe in the warmth of the sun", or enjoy the available puzzles, games ... might even watch a good movie with the family or friends. Blu-ray DVD available if you bring your favorite flick, and a few of our favorites might become your favorites, too!

Screened-in Porch: With 2 rockers, barbeque grill, a 2 seat glider and tables, it's "skeeter free" but wide open to the enticing breezes off the river. Honestly, sit here and you may never want to move again. With a south-southwest view, the sunsets are amazing. Or grab a cup of Java early in the morning and plunk yourself down for serenity just tough to contemplate. Watch the Canadian geese, mallards, loons, or the occasional heron .. so why leave? Stay a week or two! Still water, "diamonds", and soft easy breezes will grab you .. promise.

HVAC: Independent, dual HVAC systems provide cooling and heating to suit the needs of the occupants. One side likes 75 degrees while the other likes it cooler? No problem. Set it where you like it!

Lawn: Sitting on an open half acre, the front lawn (north side) is perfect for playing lawn games or just running around) without the fear of traffic. The south side lawn gently slopes down to the bulkhead and water ... great for water related games. "Corn-hole" board/bags are onsite along with volley ball net and croquet set ... have fun. To the west you can drive high iron golf shots into the orchard area but please do reset divots and pick-up your shots as "mowers hate golf balls".

Bulkhead/Water: The fiberglass/steel reinforced bulkhead has a nice catwalk with light duty boat lift and tie-downs adjoining the lawn for safe and easy access to water equipment. A floating dock has been added to aid in kayak entry/exit ... a kayak skidder has been installed and rack is close to make kayaking launch and retrieval as effortless as possible. Swimming and diving is not advised with the 3-4' nominal depth and it varies a bit due to wind and tide. Jump a craft, however, and launch yourself and family into Scott River or Pungo Creek. The waters there are seasonal in temp of course but very nice from late May until the early part of October. Occasionally you'll find "hot pockets" where the water temp is noticeably warmer compared to just a few feet away ... can't readily explain the phenomena but just enjoy it! Brackish water hosts both saltwater and freshwater fish of many types. Fishing licenses may be purchased locally with rules and regulations readily available. We have limited fishing gear onsite for you but best to bring your own, particularly "Grandpa's favorite lure". You'll spot the occasional local fisherman right on the point for a reason .. there's fish in them waters!

Kayaks: Our 2 recreational single seat, sit-on kayaks are available onsite for your enjoyment, and we "park'em" right at the water's edge. No long hauling involved. Paddles and lifejackets (XL/M) are also provided for your use free of charge. Area land/water maps are available in the house to familiarize with and waterproofed quick reference map sheets are conveniently attached to the kayaks. We suggest that you bring waterproof bags for cell phones and have directional apps installed on them for your safety and convenience.

About Ken & Donna Frengs

We are loving Christians with a humble regard for everyone and the great natural beauty and bounty of our environment. A native North Carolinian wife and now almost "60% southern" hubby lovingly share this sweet river home with other caring couples or families who have water, wildlife, and personal retreat interests.

Ken & Donna Frengs purchased this house in 2015

Why Ken & Donna Frengs chose Belhaven

Check out our new 2018 low rates!

Originally purchased to live-in with and care for an elderly parent, the symmetrical living floor plan now offers multiple vacation options for our guests. This VRBO opportunity is not a "rent it to death" residence. We choose to rent it up to 50% of the time as we travel frequently and that opens it up to sharing with family and friends ... the friendship base (established, emerging and new) is particularly important to us as we "choose to serve" others.

What makes this house unique

Want to "double up" with friends, keep the kids separate but within sight, or just flow with it all, this retreat on the water offers serenity and vacationing options rarely found in most vacation homes. We've modernized it a bit and will continue to do so over the next few years to add to your convenience and personal enjoyment. And where can you run into TWO complete kitchen, sitting room and fireplace areas in one vacation home .. yes, TWO! The "west" side offers a beautiful king BR, full shower and office with computer/internet service with its cozy kitchen/sitting area while the "right" or east side provides a queen BR and double BR with full bath/shower in between with its own restive kitchen/sitting area. The two sides come together into a breathtaking common sitting/TV area and dining set ... all leading to the screened in porch ... all that opening up to the wonderful water view and bulkhead from which to kayak, launch a small boat, paddleboard or similar. An available launch sits in this immediate community while a public launch and ample docking are ready for you in the town of Belhaven proper. Got kayaks, pontoon boat, or jetskis? PERFECT! And we may even offer a few of these amenities next year as we see what our new friends desire ... for now, a bulkhead platform with 3' nominal water depth supports your leap into the huge Pungo Creek wildlife fishing area. Want more? Consider a short 3-4 mile water jaunt into the quaint little town of Belhaven. Visit a local tiki-bar/deck easy fare restaurant with music on most weekends in peak season, try out the local (mostly nuts in a fun way) oyster bar, drop into the amazing tavern/sports restaurant bar, or sashee into a white table cloth thrill. OR ... lay back, read a book or two, walk, bike or jog in safety, and just breathe in some much needed NC air and "chill time". River House awaits you and so do we :)

VERY Clean and comfortable. All the amenities you could need. Mornings and evenings on the screened in porch overlooking the river is great. Kayaks if you want to get out on the water and it’s a great spot to get in and out for kayaking.

Great place, very nice furnishings

  • 5 of 5

Had great time with family. Plenty of room and love the screened porch. Well equipped with everything you need plus more. Owners were very friendly and helpful.

Recommended to all. Think that price should cover at least 6 people instead of 4. Nothing bad to say about home but feel there are too many extra fees charged.

Spend the week in/around Belhaven or range out to Bath, "Little" Washington, New Bern, the Outer Banks, Ocracoke, Oriental or other via friendly roads and ferries. Eastern NC is a vacationer's dream and while Belhaven is not a beach community per se, it does offer great fun, relaxation and good times for almost anyone. Expect no sandy beaches here but if you like to fish, kayak, view wildlife, see quaint museums, or just r&r with a good book and friends, its tough to beat this NC gem. Visit NC when Belhaven grows from 1800 to over 5,000 people on July 4th. With the oldest parade in NC its a 3 day haven for in the street gathering and dancing. The other 362 days are pretty laid back but offer a variety of water based events such as the Pirates on the Pungo sailboat racing and the Inter Coastal Waterway annual celebration.

Whether you are into hunting (deer, black bear and ducks), or fishing for saltwater sea trout, flounder, black or puppy drum, and striped bass, or freshwater angling for bass, perch and other, you might even run across an occasional porpoise, gar, skate, or tarpon particularly if you venture down to the Pamlico River. Oysters and crab are abundant and "catchable" with the needed effort and fun, or just swing into Belhaven for oysters, crab, shrimp, fish tacos, and broiled or battered fried fish of most any type.

And OH MY, if you are into kayaking ... STOP RIGHT HERE! Arguably there is no better recreational kayaking to be found anywhere in NC and not a better location for it than with this vacation spot. With an easy step off bulkhead, tie-downs and well groomed lawn, you can kick off right into the Pungo Creek and explore its thousands of coves and marshes, or drift west out of the slip and up the feeder creek. Either way, the waters in this area are particularly calm and highly satisfying from the novice to expert range of recreational kayaking. 2 kayaks are available for our guests .. enjoy!

The bird wildlife in the area is absolutely amazing ... common sitings include herons and egrets, Snow and Canadian geese, ducks, and hawks. Sure .. we have all sorts of smaller birds too ranging from hummingbirds to Blue Jays. And the Bald Eagle is roaring back in the area. It is not uncommon to spot the solo eagle, nor unusual to spot 5-6 in a field.

Accessibility: With an easy 2 hr ride east from I-95 on Rt 264, the Belhaven area sits approximately halfway to the Outer Banks, without all the hassle and traffic. The Pamlico River is a major river feeding the Atlantic. The Pungo River intersects the Pamlico from north to south via the Intercoastal Waterway with Pungo Creek feeding Pungo River from the west. It all looks like a scraggly tree on the map and we are located in the "lower limb" to the west ... easy to see why our waters are calm for the most part except for the occasional storm. The residence is open but sheltered from the Atlantic/Pamlico tides .. fishing and wildlife watching are abundant. With great restaurants, museums and other interesting amenities this is truly a welcome respite for those who are tired of the Outer Banks delirium. Shouldn't your vacation be fun, affordable AND relaxing? If so, try River House! You'll be so glad you did. Our simple goal is to make your stay a terrific memory and create River House as a destination spot in your future travels.
