About Lanier McRee

I love riding horses and my husband loves the mountains. So, here we are with a fabulous riverside retreat minutes from the Tryon International Equestrian Center - a win, win! In our spare time, we love to travel, hike, ride horses, relax and read books (preferably on a screen porch over looking a river!), tinker on house projects, and try out local restaurants. We look forward to welcoming you to the NC Foothills!

Why Lanier McRee chose Rutherfordton

The Riders Retreat won our hearts with its large deck, screened porch, and picturesque views of the Broad River and foothills ridge line. We wanted a place near the Tryon International Equestrian Center but also wanted a retreat - privacy, nature, serenity, and a place for our dogs to play (of course!). We think the Riders' Retreat has all that and more!

What makes this cabin unique

The Riders Retreat is 10 minutes from TIEC, has a fabulous screen porch for enjoying your morning coffee, and is close to many attractions and amenities.

Wonderful Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at Riders' Retreat. The location was perfect for us. We were down from Indiana, visiting family in Shelby. The cabin was set up just perfectly for our needs and was clean and comfortable. Some recommendations for families with young children, there is a children's museum "KidSenses" in Rutherfordton that is wonderful. We also recommend the Carrousel and Rotary Train at the Shelby City Park in nearby Shelby.

Clean, convient to Tryon, perfect for our group.

  • 5 of 5

This home had everything we needed to take care of 6 Pony Club kids that came down to compete at Tryon. When the fridge decided to be difficult, the home owner had a repair person in immediately to fix the problem. I loved working with the homeowner, she is helpful and friendly and willing to do what is needed to accommodate her guests. Next time we are head to Tryon, I would love to stay at this home again.

Beautiful and quiet with a pretty view! It was clean, very comfortable and had all we needed.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for two weeks while attending the horse show at TIEC. The location is ideal, easy to get to the highway and very quiet. It was equipped with everything we needed (with the exception of a microwave) and the owner was quick to respond and very easy to deal with. We met the cleaning crew who were also very nice and helpful.

The house has plenty of room and incredibly comfortable beds. The screened in porch is also the perfect place to enjoy your morning cup of coffee while listening to the birds.

The location is remote, but only a 20-25 minute ride and you can be at a fabulous restaurant in Saluda, paddle boarding on Lake Lure or hiking Chimney Rock.

There is no question that we would stay again!!

Convenient to TIEC and Very Comfortable!

  • 4 of 5

We very much enjoyed our stay at the Rider's Retreat during our horse show at TIEC. We came with 2 parents, grandmother, 3 girls and our two well-behaved dogs. It was very clean and welcoming upon arrival -- very cool which was nice after a long day of showing in the hot sun. The owner is very hospitable, easy to deal with and has lots of little "extras" around the home in case you forget. My husband and I took the downstairs bedroom and found the bed very comfortable. Grandmother and one of the daughters occupied the upstairs bedroom and also found that bed comfortable and that room was especially dark if that's what you need for a good night's sleep. My other two girls occupied the loft with one choosing the daybed and the other choosing to blow up the queen air mattress. The daughter on the air mattress did not seem to sleep as comfortably but may have been because she would not let us blow it up to capacity and so she would find herself almost on the floor by morning -- not sure that's the fault of the mattress, though. My only complaint and reason for 4 instead of five stars is the lack of microwave oven. Didn't seem as convenient to amenities and restaurants as other places we've stayed when horse showing at TIEC but the proximity to the horse show made up for it! Also, didn't realize it until we went to heat up a frozen sausage biscuit for a quick breakfast and were unable to find it! But, other than that our stay was fantastic. Will definitely look for availability on our future visits to TIEC!

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you loved the house and convenience to TIEC. You are absolutely right that a microwave would be a nice benefit. I'll pick on up next time I am there and have it ready for your next visit! Thanks for staying at my house!
