About Ning Gulari
We are a family of four. Erdogan, Ning, Deniz and Bora Gulari. We live in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Erdogan is a professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Michigan, Ning is a research engineer in the Electrical Engineering department. Bora is a graduate of the Aerospace Engineering Department and is a very accomplished sailor and currently spends most of his time sailing big boats. Deniz is a 6th grader full of curiosity. We all live by 'be honest, work hard, play hard and enjoy life' Erdogan bought this Bird of Paradise Home in June 1992, a few months before the hurricane Iniki hit Kauai on September 11, 1992. At the time he was also the association president for the Makanui Condo Association and he came to the Island with the first flights from the mainland, bringing a generator along to power several of the neighboring homes. He also brought lots of tarpaulin (some of which you may still see in the garage) to distribute to neighbors and use in covering holes in the roof which we and the neighbors did get. We are planning to live in this home when we retire so we take care of it the best way we can and put all our effort and labor of love into it. We enjoy our vacations in Kauai and love to share the same experiences with you. We started managing Bird of Paradise home and Hawaiian Hibiscus vacation rental home ourselves with the help of Kay & Bill Oldham, in May 2006. Before that the home was managed by a well-known management company with a nightly rate of $400-450* in 2005. We decided to take control after we found out that our management company actually charged 10-15% extra for our return guests who wanted to come back to Bird of Paradise home. We value our guests very much and want to remain friends and share our love of Kauai with them. We are pleased to offer our high quality home to Kauai lovers at an affordable rental rate. Mahalo and enjoy our Beautiful Kauai Island
Ning Gulari purchased this House in 1982
Why Ning Gulari chose Poipu
After looking at all the other Hawaiian islands ( excluding Molokai) it became obvious to us Kauai was by far the most beautiful and had the most friendly locals. We like water sports, windsurfing, kayaking, snorkeling etc. and we also liked the green lace like mountains of Kauai. Poipu had both great mountain views, some of the best beaches on the island and great snorkeling and easy access to Mahalepu our favorite beach for windsurfing. Crestview is the best location in Poipu Kai. Our house has panoramic 270 degree views of the beautiful Hau'pu and Waimea mountain ranges great views of the sunrise in the morning. Our house is on the shoulder of the last active crater on Kauai and because of its high location nothing blocks this spectacular views!
What makes this House unique
Our guest said the view from our home is ' Views to die for' Just laying on the chaise lounge in the front lanai, watching coconut leave swaying in the wind, seeing 270 degree mountain to ocean view, I can only say you are in 'Paradise'.

For our purposes the house was perfectly located. Plenty of room for all, house clean and nicely layed out, we never felt crowed. Kitchen well stocked with necessary equipment. Large decks very nice and accommodating. Property manager, Evan was very helpful and knowledgeable. Pool very nice. Only complaint we might have is the necessity of luggage racks in bungalow.
Bird of paradise
Bed in bungalow has a sway and makes sleeping through the night difficult.
The ice maker was not working and we had to spend vacation time filling and cracking ice trays.
Several windows do not lock.
AC in downstairs Queen bedroom is not working properly.
We loved the lanai, and were pleasantly surprised at the amount of equipment for beach activities that we had access to.
We enjoyed the pool, parking was convenient, easy to get in and turn around and security lights made us feel safe.
Aloha, we are glad to hear that you loved our home with it expansive lanai providing great panoramic views, warm pool, lots of beach amenities, easy parking and the security lights that made you feel safe. When we refunded your deposit, you mentioned that you enjoyed the Bird of Paradise home very much. Thus, we are a little confused about the minor problems you mentioned in your review, we could have fixed them immediately if you had let us know. Our home manager is only just a text or phone call away. He would stop by to fix any of these problems in less than 15 minutes (tighten the bed frame, change the AC to “cool” mode, get you a pack of ice, etc.) We usually set up AC in the “cool” mode and you can adjust the room temperature up or down as desired. Though, if you changed the mode to “auto” or “de-humidifier”, the AC will function based on the set temperature vs actual temperature. In the morning, it might warm you if the room is cooler than the set point. After you left, we found out that AC in the queen bedroom was set up in “auto”, so we changed it back to “cool” mode.
Most of the windows in Hawaii including our house are jalousie type which cannot be locked. However, our home is in Poipu Kai resort which has its own 24-hour private security force. In our 26 years of owning a home in Poipu Kai resort, we have not heard of a single break in. You are always very safe here. In conclusion, we really want you to enjoy your stay very much, so please don’t hesitate to let us know for any problem right away during your stay.
Location and view cannot be beat!
The view from the lanai is beyond stunning! Very short and beautiful walk from property to the Hyatt which has the best Starbucks with another amazing ocean view! Another short walk to the beach.
House was very safe and clean. Plenty of space and we had 8 people there. The convenience of washer and dryer was awesome along with plenty of beach amenities!
We loved the pool as well! Evan, the property manager, was very kind and helpful. We had no problems in the home while we were there!
We have family on the island and we got to see other places. We would definitely only stay in Poipu, Koloa area. Ning’s home is a for sure place you will want to stay!
Make sure to visit Nukumoi surf shop! It was our fave. Puka Dog was also great! Make sure to go to the art walk in Hanapepe on Friday nights. The food trucks there are soooo good! If you want to venture out to another beach, Pine Trees was beautiful and the soft sandy beach was awesome!!! Coming back to Kauai soon!
Mahalo! We totally agree that
"The view from the lanai is beyond stunning! "
Nice place, great view
The house was clean, has nice beds, great views, and had everything we needed plus more. I would recommend this house to others. The finishes are starting to get a little old but everything is taken care of.
Thank you so much for letting us know that our home is clean, nice beds and great views with everything you needed plus more! We replace the home furniture as soon as we detect wear. We will check and make sure our furniture is in great shape and well-taken care of. The beds are new and the outdoor dining set was replaced in March 2018, all three sofas in the living room were put in summer of 2017. After your comment, we found out that our novice cleaning girl cleaned the kitchen cabinets with an abrasive brush, they look scratch-worn out. This may explain part of your comments. We now have our Koa kitchen cabinet resurface. They look great now.
Wonderful home. We'll equipped with everything that we needed for a great vacation.
Close to the beaches and a playground for my granddaughter!
Mahalo Susie! Yes, the home is within 5-10 minutes walking distance to Shipwreck beach, Brennecke's beach (excellent for boogie boarding) and Poipu beach park. Poipu beach park is one of the best beach on Hawaii. It has lifeguards, shelters, restrooms and large parking. One of the 3 lagoons is perfect for baby/toddler and playground is next to it. While all adults enjoy the beach, surf, and snorkeling, we are glad to hear that your granddaughter enjoy the beach and playground as well.
A Haven for Exploring Kauai
My family of seven stayed for a week at Ning's house, with plenty of space and comfort. The air conditioning units are very quiet, though we didn't need the A/C in the bungalow due to the great cross-ventilation. The view of the surrounding mountains was a welcome change from the typical view you get from a beach condo. The location of the house is ideal for easy 15-minute walks to Poipu Beach as well as west to the Hyatt and beyond on the wonderful trails. The walkways are lit at night, but not so much as to interfere with stargazing. We are grateful to Evan for his intimate knowledge of the area and his "call-me-anytime" accessibility, though we had no problems that required his intervention.
Bird of Paradise home has equally short walking distance to the beaches east and west. Poipu Kai resort has walking paths and green belts to the beaches so You can easily walk from Bird of Paradise Home to Poipu Beach Park or to Shipwreck Beach. If you walk to the west from this house, you will reach Poipu Beach & Brenneck'e Beach. If you walk to the east from home, you will reach Hyatt Hotel, Shipwreck Beach and Poipu Bay golf course. All these places can be reached with a comfortable 5-10 minutes walk. The green belt of Poipu Kai resort has very nice walking paths that you will enjoy while walking. Mahaulepu Beach, Local's favorite, beautiful and uncrowded, is three miles away. Other Attractions and Activities: Spouting Horn and National Botanical Gardens, site of the old Fantasy Island show are three miles away. Koloa Landing, the launching area for scuba divers going to Sheraton Caves, is on the way to the Spouting Horn. Horseback Riding stables are a mile away. Other Activities: Hiking from home to Kawailoa Bay and the lithified sand dune bluff of Makawehi Point. Golf: The Bird of Paradise Vacation Rental Home is in the middle of world-class Golf Courses, The PGA Grand Slam course, Poipu Bay Golf, is within walking distance from Bird of Paradise Home. Trent Jones designed Kiahuna Golf Course is a mile away and the Kalaheo Golf course with its heavenly views (even if you do not play golf just the views are worth a visit) and amazingly cheap rates is a ten minutes drive away. The Kukui Grove golf course and the Lagoons golf courses are in Lihue ~ 20 min drive. If you want more variety there is the Wailua Municipal golf course (very cheap) and the Princeville golf courses all of which are rated among the best in the USA.
