About Richard

I have been travelling most of my life initially through my previous work in commercial productions, which for 15 years took me living and working all over the planet. I first discovered Costa Rica back in 2000 and visited frequently but within the last ten years i had not returned. As I have been working and living in Brazil. Then last year I was invited to visit from close friends to the beautiful wild Osa Peninsula. I loved it, both my love of yoga practise and surfing makes this place a real gem. Any lover of natures dream. So now here I am back and to stay for a while. Look forward to meeting you and making your time here a real lifetime experience.

Richard purchased this house in 2008

Guestbook comments from the manager

We loved our stay at Sublime. It's like a big cabin/ surf shack. A really well designed and executed jungle cabin.. It's a great mix of modern and rustic with a focus on the openness to the jungle which I loved as it was why I went to the Osa. As someone interested in design I loved the how it interacted with its environment, the attention to detail and finishes, and especially the mix of timber and patterned iron work. But most important, regardless of my wanky design spiel, I felt really relaxed and comfortable there. My favourite part of the house was the open plan living area / deck. You are surrounded by nature. We spent most of our time there kicking back after a long morning surf in the front hammock or day bed reading a book listening to the stream and the noises of the jungle. Suddenly you hear some commotion and you look up and 20ft away in a nearby tree is a group of monkeys staring down at you. So awesome! Apparently the property is on one of the main monkey trails, so encounters are daily and never tiring. We saw three types of monkeys, toucans, macaws and a sloth during our stay, all from the front deck. In the evening we would have a beer and listen the the jungle erupt before dark. Howler monkeys, flocks of macaws screaming through the sky, frogs and other unnamed jungle creatures all in chorus... You really feel like you are in the jungle. Which you are. Which is probably why. I loved it. It has all the basic mod cons, the most important being a good kitchen, fridge and wifi. The bedrooms are basic and stylish. Comfi bed, fan, storage... All you need and clean! Our hosts were awesome and welcoming. They made us feel at home and safe. It's awesome! I would recommend this place to anyone. It is a 3 minute bush walk down a private track to the nearest beach and for surfers another 5 minutes to the first of the famed points. It takes a little longer to get to the furthest points so we drove to them. There's a great bar /restaurant called Martinas a few minutes by car if you want to eat out. It was surprisingly good! It's like a crazy tin roofed Mosquito Coast bar in the jungle playing rock and roll and serving up ceviche, cocktails and ice cold beer. We had a few fun evenings there. Yep, good times. I would like to do some treks next time I am there, we scored good surf so I didn't get to do a full guided rain forest trek as planned. Oh well, next time. I will definitely be back. Raddest spot..

An Oasis in the Jungle

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I stayed at this house for 5 wonderful nights. The Osa peninsula is alive with the sounds, smells and sights of a tropical rainforest and this house was a wonderful place to come back to after exploring each day. Richard is a great host and a knowledgeable resident of the Osa area. His recommendations and tips really helped to make our vacation truly memorable. Internet in that area is hit and miss, so my advice is to turn off the devices and enjoy. Amazing!

Tranquil, private, and convenient

  • 5 of 5

It's beena few weeks since our stay - back to the daily urban grind - but still thinking about the amazing atmosphere in Matapalo and our fantastic back-to-nature time at Casa Amplatoa.

Our host - Richard - was super easy-going and helpful in giving us tips to travel around, and to live as eco-friendly as possible - which is necessary - you're literally in the middle of nature.

The location is very central to important landmarks, like the river & waterfall (bring water shoes!) and it's just a short walk down the road - literally the first turn off is the beach road - to all the local beaches. (Highly recommend renting a 4x4 SUV to get to sunset beaches!)

A fantastically stocked kitchen with all the implements you could need for a fine home-cooked meal, hot water for comfy showers - couldn't ask for more.

Funky little oasis in the jungle

  • 4 of 5

Our group of 4 had adventure after adventure in this cozy partially open air cottage like home in the jungle. It was a bit like "glamping" only quite a bit nicer. Richard next door was amazing - helped us feel right at home and we loved hearing his stories - touching ones, frightening ones and funny ones too. He's a great host and was very attentive to the extensive fruit gardens as well as all of our needs. We didn't realize that March in the Osa would be quite so hot (34 degrees C) which made sleeping a bit challenging for a night or two (no A/C). Still, we had a great stay and enjoyed the fresh pineapples, waterfall, beaches nearby, macaws, toucans, Halloween crabs, eateries in the area, and even the haunting call of the Howlers at night! All in all, it's a one of a kind little cabin in a unique setting. As long as you enjoy that away from it all, cottage-like feel - you'll LOVE Casa Amplatoa!

Beautiful home!

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautifully built home, obviously the creation of a real craftsman. It is open to the surrounding jungle (with screens in the bedrooms) and very comfortable. We particularly enjoyed the iguana who popped out of his rocks every morning, approaching the kitchen in expectation of a treat -- which of course we gave him (he does like his banana). Lots of birds on the property as well, including macaws.

There is a fresh water creek nearby that is perfect for a cool dip. Access to the ocean itself is a half-kilometer walk or drive away. Wifi is spotty -- but it apparently is that way throughout the Matapalo area because of the dense vegetation blocking signal.

Overall this was an exceptional experience. All of our questions and needs were promptly addressed. After a day adventuring, it was wonderful to come back to this beautiful home.

Sublime, indeed!

  • 4 of 5

Richard,

We absolutely loved Casa Amplatoa, from it's location among the squirrel monkeys, coati, colibris, and countless other jungle critters, to the incredible design and appointment of the house, to your wonderful suggestions for hikes and activities.

You were so quick to respond and help us with whatever we needed. We'll look forward to seeing you again at the casa when we return to Cabo Matapalo.

Muchas gracias para todo,

Liz & crew

An Amazing experience in the middle of the jungle

  • 5 of 5

The house was way over our expectations which were high to begin with (the pictures on the website don't reflect the gorgeous house, it's even much nicer in real life);

Richard is an amazing host, super nice and helpful. He responded really fast to any of our questions and had great tips. The location was breathtaking, right in the middle of the jungle surrounding us were tropical animals and a spectacular view. The house is located just a few minutes ride from the beach.

We just LOVED the house it was well equipped; the kitchen had every possible thing we needed in order to cook, the house was really clean and inviting. We stayed there only for a few nights and wished we had a few more. It's definitely the best place we stayed at while we were visiting Costa Rica.

Thank you for the amazing hosting.
